    This was pretty helpful, although I can't figure out why the muscle would want to perform that cycle rather than just transforming the pyruvate into ATP /energy via the Krebs cycle? I'd think that it's a way to get rid of a surplus of nitrogen in the muscle but I'don't think the muscle would break down a lot of protein..
    Could you perhaps enlighten me?

      I think that muscles do produce ATP from some of the pyruvate, and the rest is better used to make glucose in the liver.
      And in anaerobic conditions things are easier, simply regenerating NAD+ causes lactate to accumulate, it is then sent to the liver (Cori cycle)
