- A Minnesota man took home baby bobcat thinking it was a stray kitten. Once the family realized their mistake, the bobcat found a new home with the Minnesota Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The animal will be eventually released back into the wild.
That family needs a different vet.

I grew up on a farm in Texas. When I was a kid i found a kitten that grew to be a bobcat. Sweetest cat ever, if a little fiesty. Had to be careful not to play fight with him because he was much stronger than me.. but after about two years it attacked a rattlesnake and died the same day. RIP O'Malley.

To me it feels more appropriate to call all juveniles in the Felinae subfamily "kittens," because these cats are all very similar to our own housecats. Even cougars are surprisingly housecat-like in their mentality. The much larger and stronger cats in the Pantherinae subfamily (Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Jaguars) are more suitably called "cubs." It's all convention, really, but this seems to be the most suitable way to differentiate. After all, servals and caracals can interbreed with felis catus, so why would you differentiate so strongly that you would call babies of one species "cubs" and the other "kittens?"

I know several people out in Arkansas that have bobcats as pets. All of them were rescued after their mothers were either killed by cars, shot for invading chicken coops or were left behind. They're nice animals once domesticated, just bigger than your normal house cat.
Wild animals do not become domesticated just because you raise them in a domestic environment. Domestication is a generational process. It may be possible to habituate a wild animal to people, but that is not "domestication".
Wild animals make terrible pets. They have specific needs that are rarely, if ever, met in a domestic environment. And I wish under-educated trailer trash would stop thinking that raising an animal in your house makes it a domesticated pet.
Sure keep telling yourself that. I would not own one they deserve be in wild not fair be domesticated.
These are good people that once they realized they had something illegal that deserves to be in the wild, they called the right care takers. Most hold on to wildlife like that just to get internet clout. This is the right way to do it!
The challenge is that if that was an actual house cat, the right thing to do would have been to bring it to the vet to be fixed and then adopt it. At that age, it does look a bit odd for a cat, but there's all sorts of markings on cats and unless it does something strange like that weird sound, you might not realize what you've got.

As a cat rescuer, anytime a kitten is found you have to stay back and wait to see if mom comes back. I'm sure he didn't know as most people don't but just putting it out there for anyone who doesn't know. The only time you'd immediately get the kitten is if it's injured.
How long do you stay back?
He thought it was a house cat kitten, so there was no reason to stay back and wait for the mother. Unless he wanted to trap and get the mother fixed as well. Cats are not wild animals you leave on the streets to suffer and struggle, especially kittens. No reason to leave more out to go feral.
@@izd4 a couple hours at least. In my personal experience, the mom usually shows back up within 30 minutes. They usually don't leave them for long. If mom hasn't come back in a few hours then the kitten was probably abandoned or mom was injured or trapped by someone else.
A similar thing happened to me in 2017. I found what I thought was a little abandoned kitten so I picked it up and took it my neighbours (who is a retired vet) house and I was informed it wasn't a kitten but actually an ostrich.

I had a teacher in high school with a bobcat as a pet. She said when she let her out none of the neighbors’ dogs messed with her. She was great with people. The teacher brought pictures of the cat and use to show them to us. It was so cool.

There is a big cat rescue near me and they have a bobcat that was one of those found as a kitten and then sent to a rehab center. The rehab center had this area where the animals were moved to once they were well enough as it allowed them to leave at their own time and this bob cat just.... wouldn't. So now it's at the sanctuary because it is quite happy not having to hunt.
When I was a kid we found a stray puppy on the side of the road, it was raining awful bad so we threw it in the back of the truck and took it home. We didn’t bother taking it to the vet, but we fed it table scraps and grew to love it. Years later an archaeologist friend came to visit for the weekend and one evening our puppy “jinx” walked into the room. You should have seen the look on our guests face! It turns out that after all of these years we weren’t raising a cute puppy, but an Australian man.

My buddy worked in an open pit mine and one night in the winter one of the drivers called him on the radio and said there was a deer laying in the haul road. Buddy went there in the pickup and found it was a young bobcat. When he picked it up and put it in the truck it dove straight for the floor where the heat was coming out of the heater. He thought it would be a good idea to go the the work shop and show the boys his find. After being in there for a bit he came out and found the inside of the pickup in shreds with the cat again on the floor by the heater. Needless to say he was a little concerned with what to do now.

I’m serious my dad bought 2 baby ducks and one died so my mom went out to look for more but no one had any so she went to a local shop and got 2 chickens but one turned out to be a turkey. I have pics. And we tried again from a different store and we ended up getting one chicken and one rooster. We are just unlucky people.

This family did the right thing: FIRST and foremost, you rescue the vulnerable baby animal; second, find out if it is a wild creature, and if so, make sure that a wildlife rescue will help it return to its natural home.

For everyone complaining about the vet: The reporter NEVER said the vet thought it was a domestic cat. More importantly, the reporter said the man who found it realized the first night that it was a bobcat and took it THE NEXT DAY to see the vet. If there are bobcats in the area keep your cats away from them. Domestic cats can get what is called Bobcat Fever from ticks that go from bobcat to domestic cat. The bobcat does not get sick from it but it’s often fatal to regular cats.

My mother in law once went into the feed room in the dark, at their barn. There were cats everywhere on their farm. She pet one sitting on some bags of feed, and something didn't seem right. Flicked on the light and sure enough, it was an opossum

They actually hang out with cats. I had a fat momma and her babies come around for the kibble and water I put out for neighborhood wanderers in the wintertime. She showed up with a beatiful long haired kitten in her group. I grabbed him and "Merlin" joined our crew of feline fools.

I'm impressed with the family, they took in a distressed animal, invested in a visit to the vet and ultimately made a wise choice by giving it to a wildlife center. I know too many situations where people have tried to keep an animal like that as a pet because it's cute or seems cool to have.

@@BigBrex0124 I think what Wilma means is that smaller wild cats like bobcats can be remarkably tame when raised in captivity by experienced handlers. They will NEVER be truly domesticated so they should always be respected as wild animals but I have interacted with tame bobcats at wildlife facilities that were almost like housecats, albeit with claws twice as big.

One time one of my dads friend knew someone who found a puppy walking along the side of the road. And they ended up keeping it. A few years later they had a guest over to their house who was a wildlife expert. Turns out that puppy was not a puppy but a coyote.😳

People who'd say, "well, I'll still keep it". Are only taking advantage of its own life.
Take it to a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, accept what is literally the best for it, and don't be seeing wild animals as luxury.
My aunt and uncle actually had a coyote as a pet. Same situation too. He passed away not too long ago unfortunately, he was always a good boy.

@Orlando s Yeah, maybe not such a good idea I guess... Domestic animals have been genetically selected over time for their good nature with humans and that's not something you can train into them.
FYI. Having been raised in farming country we would have turned the poor thing over to a minimal contact program for release back into the wild.

Bobcats raised from kittens are very loving and loyal. They need some space and a raw meat diet. But that can be a great pet to someone willing to take proper care of them.
