    The hustle and drive must be respected. She wanted to be a singer and she became a singer. Queen behaviour.

      So true - her self belief was astounding. She had zero fear of failure or any doubt in her abilities. She wasn’t worried her voice wasn’t strong enough, or that she wasn’t a trained musician or anything. She really believed she had a special magic & she was right 😀🙌

    I have to say Dress You Up is a masterpiece but very underrated. The emotion in the song is phenomenal.
    It was during the summer of 1985 after Live Aid, Into the Grove was number 1, Holiday was back in the charts and sitting at number 2, and Crazy For You was still in the top 20. She was the first female singer ever to have the number 1 and 2 singles and it was featured on Channel 4 News at the time because it was such a momentous achievement , only achieved previously by the likes of The Beatles and John Lennon.

I know it was touched on in your Confessions video but I’d love something more in-depth on the American Life album and how polarising and damaging it was to her career, especially compared to how the album is now considered ahead of its time in terms of its experimental ‘folktronica’ sound and themes.

    No matter how many videos I watch about her origins, no matter how many new details I learn about, I will never be able to fathom how one human being, coming from literally the ground up, was able to put the whole world in the palm of her hand. There is no story like hers. I just don’t understand how she did it and I never will, but her trajectory does make me believe that some people are just truly one of a kind.

      She had talent, smarts, creativity, courage, hunger, drive, commitment, and belief. In the entertainment industry particularly during that time, an aspiring artist needed to have great social skills and plenty of luck too. I think her most important talent was her dancing. Without that, she wouldn't have moved to NYC to further her dancing education, then after her arrival there, she broaden her interest to acting and singing.

    Like a Virgin is my favorite Madonna album of all time. I really love it. It´s also the first album ever I got. In Summer of 1986, I was 11 years old and Papa don`t preach was her smash hit at this summer. I wanted the True Blue album so badly. When we were on vacation in Switzerland me and my relatives were at a shopping mall and I was looking for True Blue. But it wasn`t there. I only could find Like a Virgin on tape with Into the Groove. So, my aunt bought me Like a Virgin, because it was also a Madonna album and I was so crazy about her. This is the story how I got my first ever album in life. And until this day, Like a Virgin is a blast for me.

    I’m old enough to remember when this album came out and the impact it had. It’s hard to explain to people who weren’t there. What’s interesting about it to me, and is briefly touched on in the video, is how in 1984 and 1985 she and her songs were EVERYWHERE. Radio and MTV couldn’t get enough of her. Vision Quest (with “Crazy For You”) and Desperately Seeking Susan came out. Then there was the Virgin Tour. Even THE GOLDEN GIRLS tv show made reference to it. She married Sean Penn, appeared at Live Aid, weathered a “scandal” of Playboy releasing nudes (which actually seems tame now) and she was constantly talked about in the media.
    But by the end of 1985 people were calling her a fad and a flash in the pan, that she’d never have a major song or hit album again and she’d quickly be a has-been in her career after just a year or two of riding high. So what wound up happening? Quite the opposite. She released so many subsequent hit albums that most fans and even she and Nile Rogers themselves, as quoted in this video, don’t consider the iconic second album to be her best.

    Great post Jonny! So much detailed information. Thank you! I got the chance to meet Nile a few times and he seems really friendly and down to earth. At a music industry event in the early 90's here in NYC, he spoke about working with Madonna, admitting he did something in hindsight that was not 'proper etiquette.' Apparently, he was working with Madonna and Dianna Ross at the same time in the same building. He told Diana he wanted to introduce her to a new artist named Madonna, then brought her down to Madonna's studio room instead of vice versa. This must have weight heavily on him as this indecent happened ten years prior. Like I say, great guy!

    I'm 45 years old and I have yet to ever see another female Superstar at the magnitude Madonna had achieved in her pivotal years in her career. I'm not talking about 1 specific component, but world-wide Superstardom.
    I mean if you can remember 1985 to 1990, you know.
    I highly doubt I'll ever see another person achieve that level of fame and stardom again.
    She's the last of the Mega Superstars.

      @@jonnyharvey well singers like Mariah Carey/Whitney/Celine in the 90s or Rihanna in the first half the 2010’s were kinda huge, same goes for Britney in the early 2000s. Even Taylor Swift has been pretty massive imo. Who knows maybe in the long run some of them will match the magnitude of Madonna’s career (Celine and Mariah are already very close)

    • @renatopinto3186
      @renatopinto3186 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You won't, because the stardom you mention was amplified by the scarcity of media we had back in the 80s, 90s. Very limited TV reach, barely no Internet, people actually bought vinyls and CDs. Today the music industry is much more volatile, arguably more competitive, and music stars burnout much quicker, I think. Madonna catered entertainment in a very different time.
