  • I am delighted to present my rendition of Maurice Ravel's Vocalise-étude en forme de Habanera, originally composed in 1907. This captivating vocalise was commissioned by Amédée-Louis Hettich, an esteemed singing teacher at the Paris Conservatory. Hettich sought a collection of vocal exercises from contemporary composers, and in March 1907, Ravel crafted a Vocalise-study in the form of a habanera specifically for this purpose.
The piece made its debut at a concert organized by the National Music Society on February 22, 1919, in the magnificent hall of the Société des concerts (formerly the conservatory). Magdeleine Greslé and Marcel Chadeigne delivered a mesmerizing performance that introduced audiences to the otherworldly beauty of Ravel's creation.
With its slow and indolent melody, this composition, originally written for mezzo-soprano and piano, evokes a sense of nostalgia and haunting Andalusian cantilena. The habanera rhythm, which Ravel had previously explored in his Sites auriculaires, is accentuated by an ostinato in the left hand of the piano, creating a captivating rhythmic pulse that permeates the piece.
Renowned for its enduring popularity, Vocalise-étude en forme de Habanera has been transcribed for various instruments over the years. In this rendition, I had the pleasure of playing the melody on my Polle harmonica, accompanied by the piano part downloaded from the Classical Piano Accompaniments TH-cam channel. This unique pairing of the harmonica and piano allows for striking contrasts, blending the expressive tones of the piano with the bright and tremolo effects effortlessly produced by the harmonica.
I hope this rendition of Vocalise-étude en forme de Habanera transports you to a world of enchantment and musical bliss. Enjoy!
