  • A rare television movie starring an amazing cast! Jimmy Stewart returns to his iconic role alongside Helen Hayes, Arlene Francis, and Madeline Kahn in one of her first film roles. I dare say it's a better film than the previous film version.

After doing Harvey in HS in 1970, I got to see The Play in NYC in 1972 . Our junior class met Mr. Stewart, shook his hand and went home to back to my college of Shippensburg.

Yes, it was the first thing I ever saw Jimmy Stewart in. I also liked Harry Anderson's 1993 television version. So far as I know, he is the only other person to perform the role in a film or television version.

Well, it's always a pleasure to see Jimmy Stewart, and I am pleased to see that Harvey hasn't aged one bit. He looks just as tall and fluffily white as in 1950 😉 But the old movie is much funnier because the comedic timing is much more precise. Back then they knew how to do conversation comedies!

Rarely can an actor reprise a role the second time successfully but Stewart certainly demonstrated his unique acting abilities. And I now believe in POOKAS!! Thank you!

It's a superb play, full of wit and comedy. PS, as to pookas, Harvey seems like a "tulpa", but that's a whole different discussion😉

Starring Jimmy Stewart, reprising the lead role of Edward P. Dowd. It was broadcast 21 March 1972, almost 22 years after the release of the popular film on 21 December 1950 and nearly 28 years after the opening of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play on 1 November 1944.
Arlene Francis, who played Mrs. Chumley in the large screen film version reprises the same role here, but as an older society matriarch in this made-for-television version.
Jesse White also reprised his role as Wilson.
Madeleine Kahn wasn't reprising a role. This was her television debut. Her feature film debut was in the comedy "What's Up, Doc?," which was released just eleven days earlier on 10 March 1072. (Virtually no one would have recognized her in this television role unless they had just seen the just-released movie.)
… And presumably, but by no means certainly, Harvey, in the titular role.

This is unwatchable, for me. But thank you so much for the opportunity to finally see it! Wonderful cast! Guess I wouldn't much care for remakes of Wizard of Oz, Blade Runner, or Young Frankenstein either. Didn't much care for the remastered Beatles disks either. Instead of remaking the original, why not tell us new adventures of Harvey and Ellwood!? Hmmm? :)

It's surprising to me that some of the people in the comments have no idea that Harvey was a long running Broadway play before it became a movie in 1950. James Stewart revived the play on Broadway in 1970, and it's that 1970 revival that Hallmark Hall of Fame decided to recreate here.
Did anyone notice Madeleine Kahn as the nurse and Richard Mulligan (Soap and Empty Nest) as the doctor?

Not comparable to the 1950 classic, shot in black and white. Josephine Hull deservedly got an Oscar and Helen Hayes just doesn't (and can't, given her limited range in playing dithery old ladies or much of anything else) hack it. In fact, this version is fairly, to put it kindly, awful. No offense to Hayes fans, but lets face it - if anyone deserved the title of the First Lady of theater, it was Ethel Barrymore. James Stewart is James Stewart is James Stewart and that is just fine with me. He's a sweetheart of a personality and given a good role, he's an excellent actor.

    • @sabineb.5616

daniel stanwick, I have to agree. Harvey is his usual invisible self, and he has not aged at all 😉 And it's lovely to see Jimmy Stewart again. His 1950 performance was great. But this version is very inferior. The tempo and line delivery is not as precise as in the older version.
