I was a student in the crowd on the Kent State campus on May 4, 1970. This song and seeing these kids so involved means so much to me. When I hear Ohio I am brought back to that day and the sad loss of my fellow students... but this rendition sounds joyful and this is how I want to feel from now on. I am joyful that I got to live another 51 years (so far.)

We're the same age, Andrea. (My aunt and uncle lived in Kent so I was there many times over the years. My uncle could only talk about half the kids not even being from Kent State, blah, blah.) I feel exactly as you do! Such a celebratory rendition; those violins and horns! The drums!

I was just a kid when this happened but these events made me who I am today. This song always makes me tear up... how could it not? Four kids are dead for no reason just as the song decries. Four dead in Ohio. And nobody ever paid for this dereliction of duty.

I lived through Kent State and never thought I'd see the like again and then we saw what happened on the streets of Portland, Oregon.

This is the most stunning and powerful version of the song I've ever heard -- including the original.
What drives the power home for me is that -- all those young musician kids whose parents were kids when the killings took place REALLY got into it. I'm depressed at how history-starved kids are today. This brings me hope; this history came alive for and with those kids. This concert was 7 years ago; they're all gonna be voting come November. Let's see if this made a difference to them.

Absolutely majestic stuff. I don't know how Neil could've restrained himself from making overtures of peace after hearing, and surely he had, this deeply soulful rendition of one of his most moving creations. Unfortunately, a permafrost seemed to engulf the interpersonal relationship side of Mr. Soul. Smooth sailing to you, Capt. Crosby.

This year I finally drove down to Kent state for the May 4 commemoration ceremonies
It was powerful and moving and I hope to attend every year in the future, I met a few of those who were wounded that day and learn much on the weekends events that led up to the shooting, I highly recommend attending especially the eve before for the candlelight vigil
Thank you so much for this song

I HAVE to wonder, and HOPE; that those on stage, playing this Anthem of a song…KNEW the significance of what they had performed !
    I can only hope .

Your hopes are not in vain. My brother Kipp Lennon, lead singer for the band Venice, had a long talk with them about Kent State and the song.

@@billlennon5766 …. I realize that it is “ just a song “ … But it rang like a bell around the World. And people heard it.
And I’m so pleased , that today’s kids UNDERSTAND, what this tune meant, and the impact it had; on the times.

Just some trivia. Neil Young, who wrote the original song was a Canadian at the time. When the song was recorded David Crosby got really emotional - he cried during the last part of the session. You can hear his voice tremble and break at the end. We were all in a state of shock, anger, and disbelief. And the picture of that 14 year old crying “Can somebody please, please help this boy” was just republished a few days ago. Her kneeling over a dying student in shock and disbelief won the Pulitzer Prize that year - it changed the way a nation saw its reality.

Neil Young is still a Canadian and actually has been living in Ontario for awhile now. I do believe he holds dual citizenship.

Cruising by (not so) old dvds I found that was Crosby who showed Young the mag with the picture of the young woman kneeling beside the dead student. Young wrote the song immediatly, just in front of Crosby who had Nash to make arrangements to hire a studio to record the song Ohio. In "Remember my name" Crosby points at the picture of the sub-humans firing their guns. It´s a must-watch.
The immediate release of the single record thanks to the late Ahmet Ertegun was a real hit (in many senses of the word):
Stay well. Stand up and be counted.

KSU grad, 1966. Was in graduate school at Maryland on that fateful day. Was walking across campus wearing a rather tattered KSU tee shirt. Someone passing me saw it and asked if I heard what had happened. Had not at that point. In my life, and I’m almost 80, I’ve cried very, very few times in my life. That was one of them.

I hope they told the story of what the song is about to all the young people there. It’s still makes me cry to think that this kind of things happened right in front of our eyes.
