I had great results winter sowing annuals like Coreopsis, Cosmos, clary sage, Bidens, and perennials like Echinacea, Lychnis chalcedonica, Rudbeckia, Achillea...
Great update video - I had somewhat good success this year with winter sowing. I can't believe we are in late June already! Everything in your gardens always look so lush and healthy♥
What a sweet guy, George. All he wants are a pair of gloves. I would buy my husband 5 pairs if he helped me like yours, Steph, ha! Buy the man some gloves just because you love him and he likes helping you :))
Great to see the update. You have sold me on the winter sowing and I have referred so many folks to your video about it. I’ll never start plants any other way! I’m still harvesting lettuce and kale with my winter sowing starts. Thank you, Steph! Blessings…daisy
I love your new gardens you are making along the woods, with the new trees & plants, it is all so beautiful!!! I just watched you last night & tonight picking your seeds & planting, I'm winter sowing too , I love it!! 🙃
Like you I’ve spent the day gardening in our beautiful subtropical winter. I’ve used cuttings I started to fill in. My husband is a master gardener too, shovelman 🎉cheers Bronwyn 🇦🇺
My nastursiums just got there first bloom yesterday 😁 with this cool spring it's been a slow go with my winter sowing seedlings... going to rain here in PA for the next week, so we will see 😉
Hi Loraraine, definitely a cool Spring. I know they heat is on the way, so we have to enjoy the cool for now. I'm hoping for a few days of rain. Time to catch up on house work lol. The rain gives us a break. Hope you get some too! Thanks for watching, and have a great weekend!
Those irises are hard to come by and make such a delicate splash of colour. So pleased you are keeping them. That astilbe has very dark foliage...is that why it can withstand more sun than others? I've forgotten the colour flowers it will have....white, dark maroon or some other colour? George is finding gardening more of a passion than pain in the neck, I've noticed. Great to see him enjoying the process too.😊😊
Hi Jo! I do think George likes it more than he lets us believe. As for the Iris, I absolutely love these! So beautiful. The astilbe is a newer variety by PW and they show it as being able to take sun and shade. I don't know if it would have to do with the foliage because the green foliage astilbe prefer shade. I aired on the side of caution and planted it in a more shady spot. Thanks so much for watching, and have a great weekend 💚
Hi Janice, Its the natural progression of things. We get so attached to our plants, we can't bare to "throw them away". I'm forever giving away plants that need dividing. The nice thing is that most gardeners also do the same, so there's never a shortage of plants to swap and give away 💚 Thank you so much for watching, and enjoying. George is a great helper ☺
Awesomeness Steph !! You guys are a great team !! Things are looking good and theres just tgat something extra about plants we grow from seed !! Cheers J&C 🌱👍😊
Hi Steph. Your winter sowing has certainly paid off. You have so many new plants to add to your garden beds! I did not winter sow (hopefully this coming winter) but I started seeds in small pots as soon as the weather permitted in my Pennsylvania zone 7a. Have been patiently waiting for the Baker Creek TipTop Alaska Salmon Nasturtiums to germinate. So far I've gotten 6 sprouts out of 13 and I'm so thrilled. The seed packet notes 7-14 days to germinate and mine have taken more like 3-4 weeks. Better late than never, I guess 😂 But my Queen Lime Zinnias, Purple Hyacinth Beans, and Atomic Purple Gomphrena sprouted quickly and are doing quite well 🌱🌺
Hi Stef 🌺 Amazing video for your garden these plants from seeds looks wonderful and the japanese ires tiramisu they have unique flowers . Have anice day .🦋🌺🦋
Everything is looking great! My elephant ear is growing great as well as my gomphrena. I did the same concept for my gomphrena as your hyssop, planted some gomphrena in the ground and planting the rest very soon 😊
Hi Steph! Great job with your winter sowing! I had pretty good luck as well. Will probably do the same thing next year. Thank you for sharing with us. I have a question, have you had any luck with the deer/rodent stakes/to deter critters? I went out in my yard this AM and discovered some of the bud on my sunflower had been eaten. 😠 Thank you again.
Wow, you have to give us a crash course on starting from seeds. I put the plant seeds in the ground, nothing came up. I like your gallon greenhouse effect. Pleez teach us
Hi there! I use a method called "winter sowing" as mentioned by the comment below. I also have a whole playlist that you can check out here if your interested. Thanks for watching: th-cam.com/video/U_8Badm630U/w-d-xo.html
Thats wonderful! Great time to buy. I'm heading to both Lowes & Home Depot this weekend. Have to get my laundry done first then we go look at flowers! lol Have a great weekend!
I am in the process of Winter sowing for the first time this year. I already have some jugs outside. Today I got some dwarf Zinnia Mix Seeds from the Dollar Tree and I was wondering if you Winter sowed your Zinnias as well? TIA! :)
Hi There! That's wonderful! As for the zinnias, they aren't cold tolerant. As such, you should wait until later in the season before winter sowing those. Here in my zone 6b, I usually place my zinnia seeds in jugs around April. Hope this helps.
What are the stones/pavers you've used as a border for your beds? I love the way they look. I'm looking at landscape pavers and I can't decide by looking because they're not installed.
Hi there, Thank you so much. We have 2 types of edging stones we've used in our garden. We used aged cobble stone that we collected over the last year in our Japanese Maple garden. We searched on offer up, craigslist, and facebook market place. It does make a nice edging. Then we also have a man made /manufactured stone that we purchased at lowes around some of our other beds. Here's a video that shows us collecting the cobblestone: th-cam.com/video/DhH6_L4Kr54/w-d-xo.html
I was wondering if you have the address for the Tolland Garden center? I googled it but it appears as though one garden center is supposedly closed. I would love to check it out. Thank You
Hi there, Its 728 Merrow Road, Tolland CT. Tel # 860-428-5645. I recommend calling first to make sure the farm is open. Hassan is the person who may answer.
Hi Steph! I have a quick question. I thought I remembered you mentioning soaking the gomphrena seeds when you direct sowed the atomic purple. Did you soak the white gomphrena seeds that you winter sowed?
Hi Candi! When growing gomphrena using winter sowing, it is not necessary to soak the seed. The soil stays moist enough to break down the coating on the seed. Hope this helps.
@@HookedandRooted I actually just watched your most recent video this evening, and you totally answered my question in it! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond anyway. I really appreciate it. :)
Hi Lynn, As for the no dig method. Yes, I'm using a variation of that method. Typically what I see is people will put down cardboard, then compost or topsoil, then top that with mulch. We skipped the soil step. We are looking to smoother the grass so that we don't have do dig it up. Then over time, the worms do the job of breaking things down for us. We have good topsoil in that area. So we just laid down cardboard, and mulch. Then over the next year things will break down, and by next Spring, I can then plant into the ground directly. Hope this helps explain things.
Hello, Those are 9oz plastic cups from walmart that I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. I will wash them out after planting the zinnias, and use them again next year. I like that they don't waste a ton of potting soil when potting up seedling.
Hi Sherry, Those zinnias I started in cups in mid Spring sometime in late April when we got a stretch of warm temps. I did have to bring them into my basement a couple of times when had a frost predicted. But they are now growing well since its warmed up.I prefer to start them this way so I have control of what germinates. I have a hard time with sowing them in ground and getting them to grow on without getting decimated by slugs or earwigs. I did not winter sow zinnias this year.
@@HookedandRooted thanks for answering! I’ll have to try that. I’m in zone 6b. West Virginia. Love your channel, you’ve become my favorite gardener on TH-cam. 🌿🪴.

Thank you so much Robyn 💚 Isn't it crazy that it's end of June? I was literally telling George this morning it hasn't really felt like "Summer" yet.
Thanks for the dahlia info. Much needed and appreciated. Thanks Steph!

Noticed you're using the no dig method with cardboard. Do you lay down cardboard only once and mulch every year? Or have you laid cardboard twice
