- Been thinking about switching to MagicJack Phone Service? Ready to save thousands of dollar? Check out this video to see how easy it is to make the switch with a MagicJack Plus which doesn't even need a computer to operate. You can be up and running in under 15 minutes and pay as little as $19.95 a year on certain plans. Get unbundled!!!
I'm a late comer to this video. I bought the 2022 MagicJack off of Amazon yesterday. I was a bit disappointed that I had to have a Windoze machine to activate it. I use linux everywhere. So got it configured using a Windoze VM and was able to complete the activation per your instructions, then connected it to my router.and it WORKED!!
I don't know but I guess I over thought this. Being an engineer would do that. LOL
Thanks for putting this on!
Cheers.
MJP does not need a thin client at all. You simply hook it to the computer like your original MJ to register it. After that you can disconnect it forever and use the power adapter and network connection only. I have never connected it back to my computer after setting it up for the first time. Good Luck.
Thanks for the video. My magic jack works great now where as before I just couldn't get it to work without my computer. For those saying you have no service there are two Ethernet cables needed. The original going from router to wall and the second one going from router to phone. It took me a minute but mine is working great now. Best of luck!!!
Can it be hooked up to Xbox one??
it plugs to your modern. also sometimes if you have problem disconnecting it from the electrical outlet does the trick. I love my magicjack plus. i also use it on my iphone to call and text with wifi. Saves me a lot of $ a yr.
Humming right along! Occasionally, it seems a call may drop. But not sure if that's due to heavy internet use by my kids and me, MJP, or even the other person's cell phone. Happens so rarely that I don't care.
Sounds right... but the MJP could plug into the wireless router which usually has hardwire ports on the back eliminating the need to get a multiport modem. Install like this... cable modem to the wireless to the MJP to the phone. A computer would be needed to initially setup the MJP... but you could use someone else's then uninstall the software from their computer.
The new MJPlus can run without a computer, but the old one still needs to be plugged into a computer. By using a small client computer (about the size of a router) you can free up your main computer and leave it off. Yes... you still need internet.
Yes you need to have a computer to setup the MJP. It can be someone elses computer that would let you install the MJ software temporarily. After that you just need a high speed internet connection with a ethernet cable connection. MJP is more of a "I already have a computer and high speed internet connection" thing; than a "I don't have a computer or internet" thing.
To cancel your service, you should try to visit the website and contact a customer care representative. I hope you are able to resolve your issues. Fortunately for me, my experience continues to be a pleasant one.
Good video, thanks. I also have had both. I just set my Plus up yesterday after not being in use for over a year. I like that it will show the number of the person calling, although if someone's cell phone doesn't register it will show up as "anonymous". Once someone's # shows up in the list you can edit it and add them to the contact list.
You can also switch to using a headset if you don't have a phone to connect to it. You can either use the phone to dial your # or use the keypad on the computer, then pick up the phone after dialing.
It also has voicemail services and you can have the msg sent to your email. It will show the # of the person who called, with the message attached. I actually received an email with voicemail attached from someone who's # I lost, long after the service had run out (I moved and didn't have the mj with me). So, I was thankful my number hadn't been given away and could call the person back.
I'm not officially with MJ, so you should try their chat support. They should be able to solve your problem. Although, some internet providers purposely block majicjack since it competes with their own phone services.
Works like a regular phone. Anyone can call in and you can call anyone.
This is the video of better quality and better information I have found explaining how to set up "MagicJack Plus". Thank you.
You could probably just plug it into the high speed modem, but then you couldn't use the internet. Many of the newer high speed modems are already routers. So if you have multiple Ethernet plugs on the back... you are good to go without an additional router.
think this is great how you set up both ways, so grateful for people like you a real consumer using the product in it's entirety.
Thank you so much! ;)
@AmericaUnitedWeStand While you setup you new MJP be on the lookout for the step that asks if you want to use your previous account or set up a new account/number. That will be the option you want. Then if you want to port your old number over to MJP you can... but MJ charges for the process. Be mindful that ATT will most likely cancel all your services upon getting the transfer/port order from MJ. So you might want to call them first... without the DSL, no MJP.
This is the best mj plus tutorial , you did a great job showing all the details . My only concern with mj plus is that it's misleading, it's saying no computer needed when in fact you do need a computer for the Ethernet cable connection!!! But anyways thumbs up for that great vid
Complicated options would include disconnecting from the phone box outside and hooking into the system to activate your inhouse phone jacks. I simply used the single MJP outlet to run a multiphone cordless system of 5 handsets available for under $100.
My in wall phone jacks have not been activated since 2011. Can I use them now then?
please lose the background music. too distracting and annoying. otherwise, very nice video.
Yes, as far as I know you will need to hard wire the MJP to the internet. One option you may consider is a wireless repeater. Some repeaters like the Netgear Universal WN3000RP Wi-Fi Range Extender have a hard wired port and can act as a bridge. A second benefit is that your existing wireless signal will be extended in that area. Good Luck!
You can also forward calls to a land line or cell phone. I switched to MJ 4 years ago and I love it!!!
Great video, Dan! I also just upgraded from the old style MJ, to the MJ Plus, with the extended, 5 year plan. I am running it without a computer, with no troubles, to a Uniden cordless phone similar to yours. I have a broadband cable, 12 MB speed connection, which really helps out, for call clarity. So, for a one-time charge of roughly $150.00, I have 5 years of flawless sounding unlimited local and long distance calls to anywhere in the US or Canada! Saving hundreds of dollars, yearly!
I love the music. It was not too loud and very entertaining since the instructions are obviously not complicated rocket science, but more just informational. I love the duck lol. Great job Daniel and thanks for sharing. I will get the mjp soon.
Good production. The subdued voice, mellow classical music, and step-by-step us slooow steppers need is exceptional (should be standard!). You helped me understand points of MAJOR importance I did not even think about. I am very grateful for your good work and good attitude. Thx.
It is possible to wire the MJP into your home phone wiring. But I suggest with all the money you save; that you should just buy an all in one cordless system that has 4 or 5 handsets. That way... only the base needs to be plugged into the MJP.
I've heard many things, but the only problem I've had was that they renewed my old MJ again. But when I contacted them on the chat... they resolved the matter and cancelled the order in just a few minutes. I purchased the MJPlus with the 5 years and was billed as expected. There are additional fees for porting a number if you choose, but they are reasonable considering the prices of regular phone service.
I'm not too sure if this was answered but I connected it to my uncle's house and tried something crazy. I connected a 2 port splitter to the phone jack nearest to where the MJ was installed. I ran one wire from the wall to the magic jack plus and a nother wire from the wall to a phone. That allowed every port in the house to work as normal. If you don't understand reply or message me.
esqueue did any other adjustments need to be made to that setup?
I use Charter Internet. It's a cable TV based service costing me $30 a month for 12mbps (but it tests out at over 20 mbps.) That being said, MJP worked fine for me when I was using 3mbps too. The whole reason I switched to Magic Jack in the first place was that I wanted out of the bundle. I now pay $90 for cable TV and internet with no phone bundled in. Wish I could drop the TV too!!! lol
I pay 59 a month for fiber internet with at&t 1gbSpeeds
@JT8800 MJ is a landline service... not a cellular wireless service. For $1000/yr, you may be confusing the two. I know people that have ported their number to MJ but it is not always an easy process. Caller ID works, but Call Waiting ID does not for us. MJ has their own voicemail service, but we mostly use our own answering machine.
Yep... only received one call from a loser in Florida that thought he was actually calling MagicJack. It takes all kinds. If you think your number or location is private... think again. Your post to TH-cam was logged, saved and traceable. But I do appreciate the concern. I live a good life and have nothing to hide... that being said... I have a long driveway on a dead end street that is heavily defended! lol
I haven't tried that, but according to the instructions it should work on any ISP as long as they are not blocking MJ. The unit is also not wifi... so you will need an actual Ethernet wired port. Good luck!
Sorry to hear that... I still haven't had any problems other than a few bad connections that I can easily forgive; given the low price. I use a cable internet connection with plenty of bandwidth. Some providers may be throttling the connection to cause problems for VOIP telephone connections. They would rather you pay them for phone service. Try using your MJP at a friend's house with different internet... or at work to see if you get different results. Good Luck.
Yes. There's an option to keep your old number... but if you don't cancel the old account afterwards, they will attempt to bill you when it expires.
I have service through a Cable company. It's their cheapest plan at 29.99 a month for 12Mbps that actually tests at 20 Mbps. After trying all types of internet services since the 1980's; I would never use anything but a cable internet connection (maybe I would try that Google Fiber Internet in Kansas.)
@thenodsstrip A router is an "ethernet splitter." You can get a wireless one, which will have additional ports on the back; or a nonwireless router which will have additional ports on the back. The router plugs into the one port of the modem, and the computer and MJP plugs into the open ports on the routher. A second modem is not needed and would most probably lead to additional fees from your ISP. After initial setup on the computer, the MJP doesn't need a computer.
You do have to initially register your MJP on a computer... but after that you just need a ethernet internet connection(highspeed modem or router) and power outlet. You can still use the MJP in a computer if you want to though!
It either needs to be hooked to a router or internet modem, because it needs a connection to the internet. That being said, if your original mj didn't work... I doubt the mjp will work either.
When you register the mjp, one of the options will be to transfer your account or add a new account. I just transferred my existing account and cancelled the old mj.
I have a friend who will be glad to know how that works since he heard of it on television and is wanting to change his service.
This was very informative and well done. Love the ducky. I didn't know what to expect on the screens and learned so much. I see where it says, create new account, that's good because I ordered one off ebay. Thanks so much, well done!
I used a cordless phone with 5 handsets plugged into the MJP. I would imagine it is possible to run it to your home's wiring after disconnecting from the external hookup, but I'm not sure MJP produces enough voltage to run older wall type phones. You might try a longer phone service cord, instead of a longer ethernet cable. Good Luck.
Have you found how to connect through existing phone system?
While I am not a routing expert... I would have to believe that the MJP does in fact receive an IP number from the DHCP. I haven't opened that MJP software in over a year... haven't had to; it's not even installed on my current system. Still, I don't recall any settings that allow one to set a static IP address.
Great video but while some might like that music I felt like I was on hold and found it really annoying not matching mood at moment. Thanks
The idea is that you don't need to leave the computer on. So... your internet modem and router (sometimes both are in one unit) needs to be on. Formally, you had to leave your computer on all the time to allow MJ to work... now you don't need the computer to be left on. After you set it up, you don't even need the computer at all.
I've found that the caller ID only reflects the phone number, so I would just register as an individual. I think the days of charging a premium for commercial lines are almost behind us... especially for businesses with no physical location for a land line. I would test a MJP at the Ethernet to make sure the network allows the connection... but I'm sure you already did that.
I never tried faxing with the original magicjack, and heard from others that it didn't work. But I have faxed with the MJ Plus at least once with no problems. I just plug the copy/fax machine into the phone plug of the MJP and fax as usual. (I haven't yet recieved a fax, but I can't imagine it would not work just as well.)
I agree about the customer service... but they do have a chat that can be most helpful. My MJP is still working nicely... besides... I spend more than $20 on lunch!!!
Hi Daniel, no complaints I really like your video. Just one comment; at 6:53 you click on the blue box which says: "Click here to close this window and begin using magicJack PLUS from your computer"
Perhaps you should have clicked on the Green box which says: "Click here and remove your magicJack PLUS to begin using your magicJack PLUS in standalone mode plugged directly into your switch or router."
Cheers! Great Video!
@jackiejunque She could order the MJP, use your computer (or any other one that has an internet connection) to register the device with magicjack. After that she could use the MJP anywhere there is a power outlet and a cat5 network internet connection (like on the back of a modem or router.) That being said... if she doesn't have a computer; she probably doesn't have a highspeed internet connection either. Right?
Yes, all calls are routed over the internet through the ISP router or modem.
Depends on if you pause before the "for"... or after the "use."
Daniel Thank for your information I received this magic jack plus and I dont know how to use but now with your explication I know what to do.. Thank you so much!
Have a wonderful weekend
Pola:)
When you setup the MJP, one of the step by step options will present you with "porting your old number." Be mindful that upon doing so; your current phone provider will usually immediately terminate your services. I've even heard of them terminating the internet too... if they happen to be your ISP! Thereby, frustrating the user. Good Luck! PS... I think there is an annual fee to port a number... like $30/year. I didn't port mine.
@MsWalter22 The main issue would be whether or not the MJP would work on the ship. If he has internet access for his laptop or access to a cat5 network jack, it should work. But there is no way to know until you try. Let us know what happens!
I thought your headline is installing magic plus without a computer? But you’re doing it with a computer!
I don't have any idea, perhaps you can access the "chat" function of the website to get some help.
@ocean911 Yes... and the router if you are presumably using one. Your internet connection has to be active... but with MJP your computer can be off.
No. There's an option to keep your old number... but if you don't cancel the old account afterwards, they will attempt to bill you when it expires.
@candylac My mother-in-law just did the same thing... assuming you are talking about a "land" line. She bought the magicjack plus with the five year service and now has everthing setup. She did run into a problem when ATT cancelled her phone and internet service as she was switching over. So make sure you plan it out before hand. It was really dirty how they would not grant her access to her ATT email account until she signed on for a two year internet agreement!
mjp to the actual cordless phone system uses a standard phone cable.
No computer need, exactly, I have one and it works perfectly.
LOL... great observation. I guess you could see that I didn't stage the setup or even prep it that much. Main thing is that it worked. Thanks for the comments.
Try chatting with MJ support. I am not officially affiliated with them. You might try a different USB port... but your computer should detect it.
I haven't done it... but if each MJ is a separate phone number they should work together without conflict.
thanks! i just finished installing my magic jack! helped alot! :D haha and now my dads using it and it works great!
MJP needs at least 128 kbps in both directions. I would be pretty sure your dsl supports that. I would be more concerned about your phone company shutting off your internet when you call to cancel the phone service. You can test you internet speed at various speedtest websites.
Thanks for the video. Thinking about switching to the MagicJack.
*****
OK Bozo...just because YOU had a bad experience with MJ doesn't mean everyone does or will!!! For instance...I've used it for at least 5 (five) years with no problems attributable to the MJ itself or the service. So...shut your ugly face.
Liberallez what tipe of house phone are you using?
francisco diaz
It's a UNIDEN DECT 6.0 There are three in the house and they all work fine.
***** well, I will be A BIG one. Cause i love mine.
I don't have one to test. I don't think the MJ is putting out much voltage... so you may have to use phones with external power sources.
question- where you plugged he MJ into a wall plug is that the end that originally went into a phone jack?
You only need a computer with the mjp to do the initial setup. Most people with internet have a computer. After setup, the computer is not needed for phone calls.
I have had magic jack for several years. Just recently there is a exchange (not a country code) in Canada which will not connect with Magic Jack. It is 731 in area code 604 Have you ever had that happen .?
So if i'm not mistaken there's 2 way to use MagicJack With computer and without. so for With computer just simply plug in and follow the instruction and ready to go right?
Cuz my new job is dealing with this.. and its gonna be my first time.
I don't know of any way to change that automatically with MJ. My phone system, by Uniden, displays the name with the number after I store it in the phone directory of the Uniden handset.
Good instructions but the music was distracting and annoying
Does the caller ID work listing info like number, name, etc?
Do you see a telephone keyboard on the desktop if connected via a plug adapter?
I have a MJ hooked to my PC(2 years now), I got an email from MJ a few months ago for the MJ PLUS at half price, ordered it, got it, But, I want to Keep my old MJ hooked up to my PC, AND set up the MJ Plus as the houshold landline replacement and Dump AT&T but I have AT&T DSL service. How do I set that up? PC MJ is MY line. The MJ Plus would be the whole house phone so when my PC was off everyone could just use the MJ Plus. Gotta Keep the DSL.
I also want the MJ Plus to Keep our landline # ?
We have magic jack number.for one year it works very nicely.AFter one year paying one year subscription we have only one way service .we can only listen we can't make a call,.please guide us what we can do.
you will need to change your settings in your account, as there is an option only make calls, only receive calls, or you can do both. hope that helps
Not sure but its all on magicjack.com
Did you pay for the next years service? If not you may have been cut off. Check to see that your service subscription is paid up. I believe the second year of service is about $35/yr unless you purchase the 5 year plan for about $100. In either case, just like the phone company, they can't provide service for free. So that's where I would start.
Mine only works when connected to my computer. Do it only work on certain routers? I have an Xfinity router.
Thanks. I got it but it continued not to be able to call out. I could call in but not out?
Daniel, I currently have the magic jack and was thinking of upgrading to the mjp. Do I have to have a thin client also so that I'm not running my computer with the mjp? Or will the mjp work without the computer being on? Thanks for the video it helped explain how I would switch from one mj to mjp.
I want to use M J+ but only have an iPad would I still be able to set it up to my router & register online through my iPad but I don't think there's a jack for it to go into my iPad?
In other words I have modem router and an iPad p, can I still use magicJack plus
The basic idea is that you don't have to have a computer running at the time. The previous version of MJ required that you have the computer running if you wanted to make or take calls.
I have the old magic jack, what do I need to do in order to use it without the computer ?
Do I still need an internet connection ?
Does the internet cable go into the router (which I did, but it doesn't work) or the modem?
Before MJP a mini computer or thin client was needed to avoid using your main computer. With MJP this is no longer necessary. You only need the computer to setup the MJP and register it... after that you can take the MJP anywhere with an Ethernet/plugin internet connection.
The price usually covers the first year... they try to upsell you for 5 years... which I did. Then plug it in, answer the questions and that's it. The install is just an account manager/voicemail app. I haven't used the app since the install. I check messages by calling my own number. There are additional fees to keep your old number. No montly fees though. (You do need HSpeed internet and a network cable port/router.)
Good video.don't have cable.have DSL,can I use both M.J.reguler MJ on computer and the other on hand set.I just don't want conflict.I Like using M.J REG. at computer,I use headphones.Hope you can help me.Thank You.
can you keep your same phone Number???
I find the back ground music very distracting. It tends to cover you voice up some. I think it would be great with out the music.
@TheXLordsWay apparently there's a way to use it on Android devices too.
you are saying you don't need a computer...why do you connect to the internet? I am so confused!
You mention the need to do the original setup with your computer in order to register. I have the Ubuntu 12.4 operating system. I have read that I will have a problem using Ubuntu and Magicjack. What do you suggest? Can I get around having to use my computer for the initial setup?
So, even though you don't need a computer, you need a modem or a router??
The name doesn't matter. Buy the cheapest one. If you desire to have wireless in your house, then get a wireless one. It will have four extra ethernet ports on the back. One for your computer, one for your MJP and two left over. If you have no desire for wireless internet, then just get the cheapest "wired" router it should also have 4 ports. But keep in mind most modern cellphones can connect to a wireless router for faster internet. There are several wireless routers at Walmart under $30.
So you you can make phone calls with this. BUT how about can you send out/receive faxes?
ok with the MJP do u have to register on the computer or plug and go ???
What's the sound quality like?
but if 3 phone numbers then most cable modems have 4 Ethernet jacks so you can also support 3 MJPs off the one router too. My comments are based on wired of course and only a couple options depending on if you have one number or 3 numbers.
@rocator08 Just wondering if you ever got this straightened out?
