    The " young fossil hunter" absolutely loves his crab. Thanks again 😀 We went out looking for agates this weekend.

    I’ve been watching your videos now for a couple of weeks. I like to watch them when I eat breakfast.I’m always excited to see what you’re going to find next and I absolutely love when you prep things and give me a look into what is inside of the Rocks you find. Watching your videos is a nice break from the crazy of this world. When you give shots of the ocean I like to pretend that I’m sitting there enjoying the waves in the sand myself.
    When you pulled out that crab I gasped because of how amazing that claw looked and I found it very kind that you gave it to somebody else. Thanks for the break from life for just a bit.

    • @MamlamboFossils

      I often stop looking down at the ground for fossils and just take everything in, being alone on an amazing beach with the sound of the waves is such a good way to blow away all the cobwebs. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos 😄 The claw on that crab was soooo pretty! I loved it and I'm sure the other fossil hunter loves it as much! My first crab was not nearly as pretty as that one 😄

    some nice finds especially the 3 associated verts, man getting to prep that concretion will take along time but it will be worth it ten times over :0) with the acid prep does it soften the concretion to and make it easier to use the scribe, i've never used acid prep before so just thought id ask :0) super vid and you'll have to get a motorized red trolley as that would help you so much getting up the hills and with bigger loads too :0) have a super day mate and looing forward to the next one :0)

      Hiya Robert! The concretion does get a bit softer in the acid, but only the top 1mm or so. I'm using sulfamic acid which is a bit stronger than acetic acid (vinegar) and reacts for longer. I really do need a motorized sled or trolley. I have two big fossils I haven't been able to recover yet because it is just too heavy!

    Yet another wonderful trip(s) - good luck with that vertebra - thats going to be a lot of work but man its going to look great! Looking at the vid of you dragging the red wagon up the hill, I cant help but wonder if it would be easier to use a rope & belt - as you had the front wheels off the ground a bit!
    My scribe finally arrived - man its loud but seems to use less air. If we could have got them for that first dodgy price I'd happily buy another couple.

    • @MamlamboFossils

    I'm curious what acid are you using for prepping? I use 5-10% acetic acid. Bone is usually quite resistant to it and I have had good success in preparing vertebrates this way. I typically leave overnight in acid and wash off in the morning. Depending on how much is exposed I either gently immerse in water and waft off loosened mud or if a lot is exposed I soak for a couple of days in 2 or 3 changes of water before drying out and consolidating.I don't use paraloid, instead I make up a thick stock solution of polystyrene foam in acetone. I save used coffee cups and polystyrene packaging or if I need a lot I buy a packet of pellets used to stuff bean bags. I thin down the stock solution as needed with more acetone.If any fragile bits are projecting or any fractures are apparent I brace them by gluing matchsticks and toothpicks with polystyrene model cement. I have used similar techniques on fragile partly silicified fossil shells but can etch these with dilute HCl.

    • @MamlamboFossils
      @MamlamboFossils  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary! Sorry for the delay in responding. I use a 5% sulfamic acid solution, it's a bit stronger than acetic and reacts for longer. Main reason is that it's cheaper to buy in bulk here in New Zealand. I'll try out the polystyrene solution you talked of, sounds very interesting! Thanks for the great comment, I love how much I learn from the comments.

    Very nice..I see you lift that very large triple vert. And had a flash back...carried out three ton a amazing agate from a certain water shed....had to grunt load my back harness...one agot was so big and massively heavy,extremely dense...you know what I mean ..pulled me on my back feet flailing in the air..I was only 125 lb at the time...the agot I carried out ranged. from 75 lb and under..the 200 lb one took me 16 hours to pull on a grain shovel clearing rocks on the river shore..then I met my 7 foot bank to climb...I made increment steps grunted balanced and dug...when I got it up on the road..I knew I was in trouble ...how was I going to get it into the truck box..when the tail gate was open ,I had a lift of a good 3 feet...I started dragging splintered trees log and slowly made a tripod and rocked the massive round agot up until I could roll it into the truck..FUNNY the back of the truck literally dropped..when I drove home out of the bush my headlines were above the tree line. I think that agot May have been heavier than I thought...anyway, when I got home I rolled it off the back outside of my fence...at first I was worried it would be stolen...but when I realized it sunk half it’s volume in the dirt...I felt safe!

      @@MamlamboFossils As I understand the subject;
      Some of the water worn, rounded stones you examine while looking for fossils have a much flatter surface on one side.
      In this respect they are essentially analogous to primitive grindstones employed by stone age cultures such as Australian Aborigines.
      A few of the stones I have seen you examine feature characteristic scoring as well or instead as though the teeth of an excavator bucket had dragged over them.
      Collectively this can be evidence of the stones having been imbedded in ice at the bottom of a glacier.
      For the information of anybody who may not know, the ice of which Glaciers are comprised slowly flows downhill over inclined terrain.
      By this means the aforementioned stones are slowly dragged along the surface of whatever terrain the glacier in question may pass across resulting in the stones eventually becoming flattened on one side.
      Stones can of course be worn in similar ways by other erosive effects.
      When they are present at the numbers apparent in your presentations however such characteristic erosion is more highly likely to be the result of glacial action than anything else.
      The fine, gritty consistency of the talus in which the aggregates occur is also evidence of the slow but steady erosive effect of a glacier as it abraded terrain.
      Even at Antarctic latitudes Glaciers often if not normally have a stream of liquid water flowing under their base.
      Stones that have been worn down unevenly by the grinding action of moving ice often eventually fall out of the ice in which they were imbedded.
      The stones can then become water worn in the aforementioned stream which is also laden with fine abrasive material resulting from grinding action and is also deposited by the glacier.
      The flattened stones are characteristic evidence of glaciers both modern and ancient and can usually be found at locations where they existed or exist.
      There is a place on the coast near Adelaide in South Australia called Merino Rocks where an ancient glacier once flowed into the sea and many such distinctive rocks occur there.

      It's probably a slightly different process depending on locality. These fossils were in a muddy area that might have been covered by some natural event. The decomposition then leaked into the mud forming a natural cement which was harder than the clay cliff which is why they erode out like that.

    What acid did you used?

    • @MamlamboFossils
      @MamlamboFossils  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sulphamic (sulfamic) acid but acetic acid is safer

      @@MamlamboFossils YEEE!
      Not gonna lie, today was a pretty rough day. Nearly ended it on a bad note. But, luckily I stayed up two minutes longer than planned and saw you posted. Really helped turn my day around!
      I know you're just playing around with acid prepping for now, but would you mind giving an in-depth break down of how it's done one day? I'm always a big fan of educational/instructional videos :)
      Keep up the great work, and happy hunting! Looking forward to the next video, already!

    Fantastic find!!! Hope to see that spine after it is prepped and whatever is exposed from the acid bath.
