@@Eidenhoek that's part of the condition to complete this category, you have to get all 5 dinosaur coins in every single level, and all 7 moons hidden throughout the game

This category has been run at gdq a few years ago. You can find it easily and compare the difference in play if you want to see how it's evolved from back then.
I remember seeing the moons in the manual, but never finding one while playing. I also never got the SPECIAL stages. So I guess I'll boot up Super Mario World this weekend and start checking out all those things I missed as a kid.
I've only found 1 moon in my playthroughs. Back in my youth it took me months to find all the exits. Makes me wonder all the stuff they're hiding in Odyssey
I loved this game in my childhood. So weird to think how long ago 1991 is now - that most people watching probably weren’t born yet when it came out. Makes me feel old. But this game still makes me feel like a kid again.
Was born in 91. So It wasn't till 98-99 when I played it. Some of the best memories are with my older brother watching him show me all the secrets. So I was late playing it but I still got to grow up playing it.
God, hearing about Super Ryu World get closer and closer to being met was so stressful, it really added a layer of intensity to the later levels of the game
The dragon coins have always felt so useless and forgettable, so it's nice to see someone giving them some relevance by speedrunning collecting them all.
The level at time stamp 9:40, you can fly straight through it if you have a yoshi. Things are placed perfectly so Yoshi will bounce off of the saws and fur monsters. All you have to do is have a Yoshi and a cape, run and jump off the edge at the beginning and keep gliding. Takes you all the way to the end
KiyokaMakibi i remember that fortress being the hardest. I hated it at first, but because I practiced and practised it so much, eventually I grew to like it when I finally beat it :)
I remember reading about how to find that exit in my local Nintendo magazine. It was a hand drawn illustration. Would probably never have found it otherwise!
When my friends and I were young and competed who is the best player, we compared the number of seconds we took to complete and substracted it by number of the credit score, the score we got from the bar at the end of each stage and the number of lives we got (we did account the life beyond 99) and added 60 seconds (or 1 minute) for each missing dragon coin and each death. (no bugs were allowed). I missed those days.
I would imagine there's people who run Lunar Dragon on the GBA version, which does add Dragon Coins to the levels which didn't have them originally, and that probably includes fixing the Courtesy Coin.
My first game and still my favorite! Still have my original Super Nintendo and SMW cartridge. I totally want to get it back out and play again. Great run. Lots of fun tricks I want to try.
I can't believe I never noticed that getting yoshi wings makes the yoshi blue. Maybe because as a kid I always went back to get a blue yoshi in star world everytime I lost him.
Oh my gosh, I thought I knew all the secrets to this game, but I never knew about the final dragon coin room in CI2! Shows how much I cared about dragon coins...
The two pipe mini-bosses only show their feet before they pop up on the American version of SMW. The version on the switch online is not that version. I was confused as heck why their feet weren't showing.
I got a question for the Mario players. I remember going to a friends house during the years this game was just released and my friend gained access to an area which was on the Moon not to confuse it with the Star levels. Is there a secret area in this game with access to a Moon or was that a different Mario game?
I want that scorbunny plushie, just right out of the gate lol. This game was my childhood, I can't believe how fast it can be beaten by people who are way better than me.
he either does the level again since some levels have to be run more than once to get the secret exits, or there were more than 5 dragon coins in the level which don't count past the first 5 you collect.
I beat this game easily by spamming the spin button with the cape and spin jump and using yoshi. Those are the 3 things you mainly need to beat this game

Great commentary! Always appreciate a runner that explains all the mechanics as they make their way through the game.
I'd have liked to know what the coins did, but...

3) The Sunken Ghost Ship backstory
There are quite a few levels I never knew had 3 Up Moons like Yoshis Island 1 and Vanilla Dome 3.
Big Boo no hit box literally turned my world upside down. What a revelation!
I just noticed that the bars at the back of the timer are counting in binary! Neat touch!
nice
37:40 when the guy audibly slaps his face in disbelief lol

Glad you got new runners in for the Mario block. Keeps it fresh.
I played a lot of super Mario world as a kid and I NEVER knew red levels meant multiple exits LOL
We were all stupid kids at one point.
I did not know the moons existed

Yup 😃
i've never even heard of moons wtf

Pretty proud I managed to 100% this when I was 10 with no internet or knowledge of the secret exits. Took me so long.
I'm proud of you too bro! 💯
I got a device late in my live too so I learned it alone it was just that level on the actual las world
Luigi: Did you did the jump, bro?
Mario: yes
Luigi: what did it-a-cost?
Mario:yoshi
Luigi: Ohhhhh! Mama miiiiia!
I understood that reference! xD
I love this speedrunner. He explained things I have never heard in other speed runs. Thanks.

This is one of my favorite runs of SMW, would love to see more like this with self imposed challenges.

But would that secure all of the dragon coins?
I've been playing this game for almost 30 years and I just learned about spin flights.
1:34:29 Ever since I brought the game when it was released, the way into that fortress has baffled me. Feels good to find out how to get in now.
Man me too! When I was a kid I wanted to do all the castles and fortresses and that was the only one I could never get into! 😔
KiyokaMakibi i remember that fortress being the hardest. I hated it at first, but because I practiced and practised it so much, eventually I grew to like it when I finally beat it :)

You were young and yet you still each had a credit score?
Sure, this run was tense, but not as tense as the fear of not getting to see Super Ryu World
Excellent commentary, I loved it. Made this amazing run even more enjoyable. Very well done.
25:06 legitimately didn’t know that moon existed til now and I’ve been playing this game for almost 22 years, holy shit
also LMFAOOOO died to an autoscroller
this run was the perfect mix of expert skilled routing and awful luck , honestly very entertaining
RespectThePep so you must never have seen 96 exits on your title screen, FeelsBadMan.
Love this! Didn't know there's a lot of keys and secrets here! I only use to get through start world and finish the game when I was young haha!
Such a phenomenal game. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Man, that is dope. Who else watching in 2020?

I’m confused, I thought he was getting all the dragon coins in this run, how come he missed one @4:44 ?
Levels with multiple ending only require you to get all dragon coins on one of your runs. He has to come back there later
This run is sick
What a great domain of the game, congrats.
My second favorite Mario game. R&D4 really put together a couple of masterpieces after SMB 2/Lost Levels.
Wait, big boo can't hit you? I've played this game (occasionally) for like the last 20 years, how did I not know this?

Two-exit course. He goes through it collecting the coins later.
41.50 he goes back
My best time is around 4-5 hours for all exits, I didn't time but I feel like that's a pretty good time for a non-speedrunner
Dude thats dope. I hav never come close to that even tho, SMW is a top 5 fav game of mine hahaha!

Watching this, I found sub areas in this game that I never even knew about. Also, yes, soda lake is the only stage with torpedo teds.
