In 1973 I was listening to Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire in my basement suite vis a Sansui sound system and Altec Lansing "Santana" speakers (probably disturbing the neighbours). I said to myself, "This is timeless music; I'll still love it when I'm old." I'm old.
Unbelievable and sheer perfection from, next to Miles Davis, possibly the greatest musician to grace our planet. Thank you John and your fantastic band.
One of my top ten songs of all time! With that said, might I interest you in a short drum cover of this track? 🤩 th-cam.com/users/shortshD4YCGAQtko?feature=share
John’s music has inspired me like no other since I first heard Birds of Fire when I was 15 in 1973. I can’t imagine my album collection without his music.
I also heard birds of fire when I was 14 in 73. And it had a huge impact on my musical tastes ever since. I was lucky to have seen them back then at a very small concert hall. I also saw Billy Cobham at a drum seminar when I was about 18 and Jan Hammer with Jeff Beck. I didn't realize it back then but I was blessed to witness these musical masters.
Simply wonderful. The late 70’s were my musical formative years here in the UK. Music unites us all and I’m so grateful that your music still continues to shape my life so profoundly. Deepest thanks to you all. Stay safe and well.🌞🇬🇧🙏🌞
Time signature is simple 12/4: >> 4/4(8/8) - 4/4(8/8) - 4/4 (7/8+ last 1/8 theme/melody starts; da/dada-dadada-dadadaaa..) 🙃 Cobham played many different versions, but as far as i know no odd-beats, only some fast 16/16 subdevisons. I don`t like this "song" at all ;-)
This particular tune seems to reach through the decades and captivate me each and every time. First heard in the 80s, and the dynamics nearly took my head off (haha), and it's been woven indellibly into my musical being. I still have that vinyl, which was bought (probably for next to nothing) at a used record shop. In fact, it had a particular repeating pop at one particular section which I always expect to hear, even though I now only listen to it via a pristine digital source. You know, you know. I'm sure you know.
Genuinity in the extreme ! Music, launched into the upper atmosphere ! EXTREME THANKS TO :John McLaughlin (guitar); Gary Husband (keys); Etienne Mbappe (bass); Ranjit Barot (drums) for playing on - all through the Pandemic !
LOVE it!!!!.. Thank you so much guys.. awesome as always.... had the pleasure of seeing you guys in this lineup live in 2019. +++++ Abstract Logix !!!!!!!
Great music!!! thanks guys.... I would love to see Bill Bruford play with JM.....just imagining....maybe in some alternate universe it is already happening......
🎼...wow, very cool, thanks so much for some positive energy AND, oh Man, yep I know this piece well, was in Central Park, Schaefer Festival, I think ‘73, John, Jan, Billy ( whoa ), Rick & Jerry... When I got home, I took out a workshirt & did a ✨Billy Cobham✨Graffitti style piece on the back...I play Flutes & he completely blew me away, as did all of you...Much love & thanks, Fox🌬💨🔥🕶
Wonderful performance -- as always with the 4th Dimension -- but is anyone else getting an over-modulated audio signal? It's really hot on my system and distorts even at low volume.
Just a fantastic rendition of Mr. McLaughlin's masterpiece.

Great recording quality. Just love the bass
I just got this Topping a90d headphone amp and it's made all my headphones come alive. The bass notes are potent and smooth.
McLaughlin is one of my favorite guitar players hands down!
Ranjit Barot is just killing it on the drums! ❤️
They all seem to be killing it... 😊
all of them....and as far as drumming goes..love to see Ringo even try 10% of this

Uh bach, Debussy, allan holdsworth?
Totally agree - John's span of styles, genres, bands and musical brilliance and constant reinventing himself has been paralleled by no one else
@@pobinrI do admit that is a classic comment , however no be too critical of this .
This is nostalgic and timeless at the same time
Thats it!
One of my fave Mahavishnu tunes ever. Great hearing it here in 2020!
Magnificent. It sent a shiver up my spine, and brought a tear to my eye. Beyond beautiful. I've always loved that track. (New album out July 2021.)

Wow John McLaughlin, how many guys remember the One Truth Band !!!!!!!
Saw them twice at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, Australia... Wild. JMc playing a banjo... I never saw that coming...
@@TheDavidfallon yep was a crazy line up....
Dude, I was just listening to that album off YT when I stumbled onto this posting dated a week ago.
You do realize that he pre-dated Bela Fleck and the Flecktones by about nine years.

Great remember John 🎶😱 you are not human..you are Jedi👽 🏹
Awesome 👏🏾

One of my earliest "inspirational' artists - I still have the cassette!
I love and admire John McLaughlin. He has been my musical role model for 45 years of guitar playing......
McLaughlin , just gets better with time .
Are they even jamming in the same room? Most excellent!
John is best guitarist and musical artist and best human being ever
Really!!!
I agree his precision is extraordinary, I listened and watch rock guitarists.this guy is a level beyond all.
Using superlatives is making uncomparible things comparible. So all the other musicians are less good.
Do you know all humans on this planet?
Great. It's settled. We can all go home now.
This song never gets old! Many thanks!
❤❤❤❤❤❤I never wanted it to end..........
I love hearing this tune, and I don't know why. It's partially because of the spaces and surprises in it.
Happy Birthday, John!
That was EXCELLENT!!

This is freekin' GREAT !!!! Thanks you, John... for the decades of amazing music...
This performance and this group are just absurdly good.
Absolutely Agree This Band Is Fantastic Together
Pure beauty! The basic motiv has some feel of eternity to it.
I think Cobham played the time signature 3 3 2 3 4 4 5.

Music of my youth. The 70s was heaven for instrumental electric art music. Does anyone know if they are the Jack Trip software to play together?
Love it anyway you slice it:))))))
