  • In this week’s episode, we check out the Cosmere Role Playing game and some initial impressions we have of the beta packet available on DrivethruRPG.com.
In 2023, Dragonsteel Entertainment and Brotherwise Games announced the Stormlight tabletop roleplaying game, set in the acclaimed epic fantasy world of the Stormlight Archive. However, with this kickstarter they revealed that its much much bigger.
We’ll explore the game’s mechanics, unique features, and how it stacks up against other RPGs we’ve played.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more RPG content! Share your thoughts and experiences with Cosmere or Sanderson's other works in the comments below.

So for the stretch goals. When the Kickstarter began there was no stretch goals. Instead they decided to add goals every day or other since they are figuring out what they can afford to add, rather then setting up points with a cost. This due with them massively funding over their goal. So at the end of this I imagine we will see fifteen to twenty goals when this wraps up

That is kindof a cool way to do it, and it'll keep people looking back at the kickstarter to see whats been added.
Thank you for the info and the comment!

high. sure want to see how the game played. seen high rollers did it with a big cast so it would be a nice balance to see it how it plays with a small group.

I wish Foundry was one of their digital partners. I mostly got it because it has the best PF2 implementation, but also because I didn't want to pay a subscription.

They’re adding foundry. They announced that a couple of days ago.

We have the same problem, we've been looking through different VTT's to see if there are any we want to use and the cost benefit of a sub one or not.. How do you feel about using Foundry?
Also thank you for the comment!

@RoleWise I like Foundry a lot. The different wall types are very useful, for example. And mods add even more flexibility. It also has a big chunk of PF2's rules automated.
The only thing that annoys me, and maybe this is something I'm doing wrong, is that I find it very time-consuming to align a map's printed grid to the Foundry grid. I have to keep reloading the scene with a different grid size until I hit the right one, because I can't find an option to move the map or grid off their default positions.

It’s funny you mention having issues with listening to Stormlight on audiobook because I had a very similar frustration trying to listen to Wheel of Time!
I kept getting confused because the sentences weren’t making sense and there was some character named “Loose There in” took me the whole prologue before I realized that’s a proper name…’Lews Therin’
I can tolerate weird fantasy names but when your name can be replaced with common words I’m out. First there’s Loose There In, then there will be Tight Roundabout then Rough Under Out.

    • @RoleWise
      @RoleWise  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

That’s hilarious! Fantasy has this really hard line to walk, make it unique and imaginative, but also don’t make the names and stuff confusing (or boring, let’s just say I could never finish the Silmarillion). Honestly, I listened to some videos to explain Roshar and its unique setting and this time has been far more enjoyable. Now I just have to convince my toddler that he does want to listen to this over his music while we’re driving…
Thank you for stopping by and we hope to see you again!

As a Sanderman fan who has backed the mentioned miniature kickstarter by Brotherwise game: you'll get your stuff. Maybe with a few months delay but you'll get it^^ Got mine and they are awesome! But yes, these are more fancy preorders usually. But Brotherwise is an independent company afaik and they do need the money for production as well. So it's a bit of both in some way. What I can say so far is that shipping costs at least for those of us who aren't from the US are way better this time around. Last time I had to pay about the same amount of my pledge for shipping because shipping from the US is a nightmare (I could pay it because I hadn't been to any festivals during Covid obviously lol I basically splurged on it with the money I would have paid for festivals otherwise).
The stretch goals are not exactly stretch goals. They decided to add some every other day or so. Imo, it's more a thanks because they knew they would finance the project. And this way they can see what they can afford with the money they would get above the amount they needed financed.
What Brent said about why they might be using a D20 system is - from what I heard in interviews - true. And tbf, as someone who hasn't played a lot of ttrpgs it might be more accessible as a lot of people have at least watched some form of actual play for DND. Or had a friend tell them lol Also one of the Brotherwise people argued that it made the most sense with the magic systems (they are complex. I still think Mistborn would make for an amazing video game because of how that magic system works. Again.. I'm not very experienced at ttrpgs so I can't tell if the argument is good or not. I only really know two d20 systems - DND and The Dark Eye (the latter I have some issues with but I also had a shitty GM so there is that..)).
The plot dice came about because apparently their lead designer also worked on one Star Wars rpg which had that? And apparently during GenCon people who tried the Cosmere RPG really loved that element.
Anyway, interesting to hear from people more experienced in the hobby and who don't have much of a knowledge about the Cosmere. I like seeing that perspective as a fan and ttrpg somewhat-noob lol Have fun if you guys decide to try out the beta material^^

I think we will be trying it through the beta and keeping an ongoing on it it as it rolls through the kickstarter. Using a D20 really makes sense if you're trying to draw people in for the reasons we mentioned. Rolling one die just sounds easier, and people in general i feel most people have a feel for d20 simply by osmosis at this point lol
The Plot die is neat and I can see people really liking it, it really can make that particular dice roll feel special, and if it works out the action itself feel epic.. So its interesting..
Thank you for your input on and good to hear from you!

I haven't finished the video yet but I must say I appreciate the discussion from non-fanboys. I myself am a big fan of Sanderson but a relative TTRPG neophyte so it's pretty easy to wow me with almost anything! It's very nice to see some perspective from those that have been around the block on other TTRPGs that don't have a large positive bias toward the IP.

Thank you for the catch up on the news, I was not aware of this game, so its always nice to see what's out there in the growing world of TTRPG. I think that your observation that anything that creates an accessible invitation into the TTRPG world can only be a good thing, and this is no exception. If we are thinking about IP that would be a world I would love to run a game in then 'Joe Abercrombie's' books would be for me, however I think that ' Valraven: The Chronicles of Blood and Iron' by World Anvil publishing might just give me room to do that.

    • @RoleWise

Its more high fantasy high magic so I'm not sure how much I'm interested in those D&D Style games, but we'll probably check it out, and for sure any entry is a good one. I think it being a D20 system was a goo choice to push their accessibility too.
I've heard of Abercrombie as an author but not read anything. I'll give it a look, Its always cool when you can find a series that draws you into exploring a world. The old Shadowrun Novels when I was a kid really made me jones to play in that future..
      Thank you!

    • @micklangan7544

@@RoleWise I think that the vast majority of people of a certain age began playing TTRPGs because they wanted a way to enter a literary world and exist within it, the DNA of DND is Tolkien, I wanted to see the world through 'Striders' eyes, not Aragorn's however. I think that younger generations now want to experience what its like to be in Graphic novel or Film and Series spaces, this is why I think its so positive when designer's name the influences of a game setting "Its like playing in a 80s action film" or "Its like playing in Buffy or Supernatural". As for Abercrombie, I highly recommend them, but obviously read them in historic order, Dark historic, low magic fantasy.
