Original dragons and demons (drakar & demoner) that this game is based on did have a world. It was called Ereb Altor

I hope that Free League gonna publish an Expert edition, like in the original dragons and demons. I guess it depends on sales

Thank you for the conversation, pleased that you are enjoying Dragon Bane. I would certainly recommend the Bestiary, which also offers 9 new playable races which is very fun. 'The Path to Glory' is up for pre order with a PDF immediately available which is always nice and it does look fun. I would certainly recommend the optional rules, like the pushing rolls and expanding out the Bane and Boon system to make it a bit more dynamic. It is probably more of a GM style thing but for me there is no such thing as a guaranteed success or failure in any rule set, a Dragon roll might mean you still fail but you fail with unexpected positive effects, a Demon roll can still be a success but the effect could have lasting future damage, Infected elf blood in your eye after you stab it to death with your big pointy stick.

Ooh nice. I bought this after a high from playing Forbidden Lands but haven't even looked at the book. I'm glad to see y'all taking a look.

Forbidden Lands is another one we want to try, but Dragonbane is pretty fun and simple. Its a beautiful book if nothing else very much worth having.
      Thank you for your support!

@@RoleWiseForbidden Lands has risen to be my favorite game. We tested it out and are going on two years with no plans to stop.

Wow! That is a pretty strong endorsement. I'll see if there isn't an opportunity to recommend it to the folks. Funny enough our goal was more scifi this year, but there are just so many good fantasy games that have jumped in there....

The language roll discussion speaks volumes to the need to have a distinction between levels of difficulty for checks. I love roll under, but it would help to have a way to distinguish between difficult, hard and near-impossible. Hitting a drunken cow with a bow and arrow should be easier than hitting a swooping drake.

I think degrees of success are nice for a gradient way to approach success for sure. In the games defense the fact I rolled a 1 (crit) was pretty funny. Also in most systems regardless of like degree of success it would have been a success. It just makes things funny sometimes.

I think the pitch for DB isn't really any one mechanic but the package as a whole and how all the smaller building blocks interact. Easy to understand, reeaally light on the maths and encourages roleplaying for the fun of it.
The combat is simple, buuuuut then there's also how the initiative, parry/dodge, armor, action economy and WP systems interact.
The wilderness exploration is simple, buuuuut then there's also how encumbrance and the Bushcraft skill effects what you can afford to bring with you and how your equipment choices effect exploration as well as the rest mechanics.
The death rolls system is simple, buuuuuut then there's also the rally mechanic and how a player may use that to narrowly escape the situation.
    Etc., etc.
There's nothing really groundbreaking in here but the way it's all put together just makes for a really fun time.

I love the art of dragonbane. It's kind of a dark storybook feel. I've never played it though.

Its so true! I can't praise Johan Egerkrans' art enough. I what I've seen in both the Dragonbane and Vaesen books.
Hopefully you get a chance to give dragonbane a try in the near future, our home table is glad we did :)
      Thanks for stopping by!

You have the rules for making magic items in the magic section, the spells nexus, permancy etc..

You are right, the game does offer some ways to make items carry magical effects. And that can be a good start to mixing your own blend of items to add to the game. I think more my quibble is that it doesn't really expand past that. So while there is always trial and error, I was hoping for a bit more than the aside to elaborate on how the system balances magical items or gives specialized effects.
And don't get me wrong, we are having a blast and while we're starting with the basic rules, we are adding house rules as needed throughout the adventure. Or borrowing some of the rules from the solo adventure as they seem like they work well for regular play too!
      Thank you again!

Good discussion. I'm using DB to run an overlapping two table, two gm sandbox campaign and so far it's been a hit. It's a breeze to run and the players have all commented on it being a "fun" system.

    • @RoleWise

I think it is a fun system, i like the roll under mechanic in it. There's also a lot more to it than I think we've been getting at.
A two table two gm sand box that sounds intense and fun. Feel free to share more stories. Sounds very cool!

Trudvang is not classic DoD though. It maps to Ereb Altor the same way Birthright maps to Faerûn.
I like the skill system, as I always have (I never really _got_ D&D's take on it, TBH), but old DoD distinguished between passive and active skills, and I think something like that should bear reintroduction.

We are really enjoying the game and I like the roll under skill system. Dragonbane is very cool and I've gotten more into it as we play.

About the 5 in a skill. That doesn’t mean you are 25% proficient at all and everything that’s related to that skill. Quite differently, it only means you have a 25% percent chance of being proficient in a specific, story relevant sub part of that skill. IE. You know how to pick that lock, or avoid this guard's vigilance, or understand these few sentences of a local dialect.
I mean that 25% in languages means you know 25% percent of dialects to a level of functional proficiency. 25% in pick lock means you are proficient at unlocking 25% of all locks. But on that specific lock you just rolled for, you are probably 90% proficient.
You are rolling to see if the challenge at hand is part of the Ven diagram of what you are functionally good at.
Why do you know these things? That’s for the player to decide.

Woah, I just wanted to say first I really enjoy your channel. It Inspired me to get into Symbaroum..So thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I think this is a great way to look at it from a narrative perspective and I guess we get bogged down in the mechanics of it sometimes. I think this thought very well might change my perspective on how to do challenges a bit or at least make me rethink it. because its hard not to think about the mechanics of.. 25% means he's just as unlikely to pick an easy lock as a difficult one.
Thank you for this, and the discussion!

I like Dragonbane. It's great fun. It's rather rules light. It's missing bits and for me feels incomplete. There are no maritime rules, no rules for castles, armour appears skimped over. There aren't enough spells. Its lovely and will expand. I'd give it a seven out of ten. I prefer Mythras or VS Dark Master but those games are more rules heavy and detailed. It's fun for a different style of play away from simulators.

I think its a fun system and yeah it has its limitations but I think there might be places outside of the core book you can get those.
we will look at the other games and check them out. Its different and I think a bit more tongue in cheek which can be fun.. and its pretty easy to pick up..
      Thank you for the comment!
