- We put the call out to our viewers to choose which of 5 nobby opals they wanted to see cut and number 4 rub/nobby trumped the lot!
Our prediction for this nobby was that it posed the most risk.
The face of the gem is showing some nice color but I can see a fair amount of potch running through it. So tune in here is our cutting video of the number 4 nobby from Lightning Ridge Australia and let me know what you think of the outcome in the comments.

Don’t beat yourself up too much Sir. Remember, you’re working with what nature gave you.
You cut 2 gorgeous gems out of that !
The smaller stone really spoke to me but the bigger one was very special as well.
I still say #3 is going to be the one that really surprises us.
So I am really looking forward to seeing that one cut.
Til next time… God Bless you and yours and us all !
Hi Justin! Not only do you cut the most beautiful stones, but your videos are just top notch all the way around. From the background music to your insightful commentary, your professionalism and your love for this most exquisite of gemstones shines thru as brightly as they do. I learn something I can use with my own opals and jewelry every time I watch you work. Thank you so much.
Every time I look at your opals, I think how much they look like a piece of impressionistic art. So beautiful. The earth's canvas is amazing.😮😊❤
These would make a lovely two layer necklace with the smaller one resting above the larger. Two chains joined at the clasp.❤️
Yes! Thank you!
You show us every little movement you make. You show us how you perform such an amazing and beautiful craft, for free. I will not take this for granted, Justin! BEAUTIFUL gems!
I am impressed by Justin's dexterity... after he sliced the stone he worked the first half while casually holding the other half.
LOL thanks I could put it in my mouth but I risk swallowing it.
I thought the same thing! Ya know, just casually hanging onto it... lol
He is an expert. Always has a plan B.
Like a magician.
What a beautiful story you tell! It usually begins with hope and wonder, then quickens to teeth-clenching doubt and fear. Next comes courage and faith, followed by disappointment or jubilation. The perfect ending to this movie is always the polishing because it is so relaxing, knowing you have extracted the best the opal had to give. Beautiful!
I was almost yelling at my screen before the slice "Now, that's why I didn't choose number 4!" Can't talk now, I have a mouthful of humble pie.
I love these videos for the mystery and reveal. I'm glad the result wasn't given upfront or in the title.
Thank you
I have to admit, I had a little anxiety when I saw how thin the color bar was. Nice save. They turned out beautiful.
I think it is even more beautiful with the little black in there!
Love your work! ❤
Is it only me? I LIKE the black poch swirling through the colour.
The stones turned out great and probably with a higher value. But the more natural look with the black potch in it was also very nice with great contrast.
I have certainly cut my share of Australian opal and I will say Justin you are one hell of a cutter. Excellent.
These two stones will increase in value due to their individual unique signature AND their family signature. Clearly, these two should be sold as a set in my opinion. And at a higher price. They have a family fingerprint. Gorgeous!!!!!
Now that I have seen your finished stones, I digress. In this episode, each one is unique and will never be duplicated. Beautiful! You are Picasso.
If you're new to cutting opal or want to try cutting, look up your local lapidary club. I have just joined after watching a million of Justins videos. It cost me $50 AUD to join for the year, you can then use their cutting wheels, dop sticks, polishers all the things you need for $6 for the day. They generally have potch for you to practice on. My great grandfather cut gems and opals and never taught my dad or me, I had never met him but I was cleaning out his old shed in preparation to be sold to pay for his funeral when I came across rough opal and now have contracted cutters bug obsessive disorder.
Those turned out absolutely beautiful.....and I've watched for many years. Might be my favourites, peacock colours, should stay together in one piece.....
Thanks for sharing
That was a scary opal to work on Justin! So glad it turned out so well! $8,000.00 fantastic!!!
If anyone could cut it you are the man to do it! FYI I picked #4 to be cut❤
Thank you Nancy
Im totally in awe, i simply don't have the words to describe the beauty that you have created, thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.
I think the Feather pattern might be my favorite. Let's get real they are all my favorite!!!
That color being so thin and right on the black potch is what makes it so vibrant! I don’t think the feather pattern would’ve shown up otherwise
Yeah you might be right
Those Opals turned out stunning, Justin!! I'm so chuffed you decided to cut them when you did. That colour bar was so thin!!! Love from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 🇨🇦
That stone you cut in half was the most beautiful opal I have ever seen
I know what you mean @StephanieLondon… I too love the blackness of space behind the vibrant astro-colors! In the comments to this video, I see that many viewers agree with you and me. However, how many of us would step up with $10,000 to buy that stone? Justin sees black potch as an “inclusion” because he knows from selling thousands of opals what needs to be done to pay his employees. He’s an artist, but not a starving artist. In a perfect world, you and I would’ve stopped the video and had our own little bidding war to decide which of us would get this gorgeous precut stone! ❤
Because I am a fan of signature stones and not color that is the same across the face, this one was a tough one for me to watch. I like the black with the opal. It is its signature. Meaning that it can never be confused with another stone. It is unique.
I really liked those inclusions, I thought the black really complimented the colour. Have you ever thought a stone with inclusions looked too nice to cut up and kept it as is?
I did too. It made it look like it was a painting almost. It reminded me of something by Van Gogh. One of his floral paintings. Or maybe Georgia O'Keefe.
It is harder to sell beautiful, but unusual gems (less of a market, harder to price). There is a balance between being an artist and being profitable. I loved the inclusions too, but gem cutting is a volume operation. I would love to see a series on this channel where he makes some more artistic gems/specimens!
Life has been complicated lately. But that's allowed me to have 3 whole videos to enjoy streaming at a time! That has rarely if ever happened. Each video you share with us is a gem Justin. Thank you! The stones are amazingly beautiful in your talented hands.
Justin, I habe been away undergoing Cancer treatment and just now heard the new tune or song you are playing while you work. I love it. Keep up the great work Sir.
I sincerely hope that your treatment is progressing well. I was diagnosed in October, so feel an empathy with all who are travelling a common road. Sending very best wishes from the UK.
Justin you know what I think I love your show so much because I can see how big your heart is through the camera I got the question myself if it was the front but no you are totally one of the nicest people on the planet and you're giving the world a secret
🙏🙏🙏
Justin I commented too soon! OMG the Archangels of Opal Brilliance are looking after you! They are magnificent! Just gorgeous!
A minute in, and I am thinking that's a spectacular gem! Loving the hint of chaff!!! 😮 I am so glad you saved that color!! Feather huh? Magnificent!!
Great Work Justin, You Have Pulled Off Another Great Australian Opal Marvel On Your Show!

You always say how "lucky" you are. Those patches of luck are gifts from our loving Father. I think He must love you a lot!
I cried a little inside when you sanded off that pointy tip 😢 It would have made the cutest miniature gem
Call me crazy, but I love the black potch lines/inclusions in the multicolored gems. It is such a vivid contrast. If I had the money to buy gems, I'd be requesting rainbow colored with black potch inclusions.
I agree! I love the ultra bright mixed with the negative lines. It gives the stones beautiful contrast.
like piebalds
Don't know crap about opals. Think they are beautiful. Justin, you do a great job being an ambassador of opel. Will keep watching to learn more. Thank you
This was unexpected.
In what way?
@@blackopaldirect I didnt expect that potch to come out so cleanly.
When I saw the stone at the start I immediately thought it would make a beautiful butterfly with the potch in the middle being the body. The 2 gems you turned the stone into are stunning.
That color bar was so thin, I had my fingers crossed for you the whole time 😊 I’m so glad you got those 2 stones out of it.
They are both beautiful stones. I think i just fell in love with that feather pattern, soooo delicate and beautiful.
I am a chef and now and then though not often everything just goes wrong. You did a great job here!
Thank you for telling us the patterns. If you hadn't, I was going to ask. I guessed Moss and chaff. I didn't know about feather.
I think the potch added nice contrast to an already attractive stone
Maybe true but not value
FABULOUS 😍 I'm here yelling cut it in half, & you said "I'm gonna have to cut it in half"
Those two stones are the most beautiful i have seen yet. They look like peacock’s feathers. Beautiful.
I chose #5! I’ll bet it comes out the best of the lot.
Wow! Those turned out beautiful!
I’m a little late watching this one but that was pretty cool Jason. You know everyone watching was saying nooo..keep going for the one large stone and each and everyone one of us would have ended up with NOTHING. It really shows the true magic only a highly skilled professional like yourself could have made a dime on that stone. It was awesome.
I was on the edge of my seat watching this, with fingers AND toes crossed!! And you did these beautiful stones justice. They look amazing! Good work, as usual, Justin. 😃
I have just ordered my first rock tumbler and some material to tumble. My natural interest and your inspiration has now officially turned into a hobby. From there, who knows? :D
Bravo for you. You really made some amazing gems. I thought there was a good chance of losing that color, and was cringing every time you put the face on the wheel. I would say it all turned out, but that would diminish the skill you showed. You made this happen, and it was fantastic.
Thanks for the show Justin and Co!!
Greetings from Granby, Colorado!! ✌
Nice, Justin. You surely know how to make the magic happen with the Opals Mother Earth makes for us! Til next time, take care, and we'll see you on the next...
Thank you! Cheers!
I like the feather pattern! But I have to say that the black potch that encircles pods of opal color is beautiful.
These are gorgeous, a pendant with the larger gem and a beautiful matching ring with the smaller one.
Oh, how I wish they were mine. That is what I would ask Ruth to design for me!
They are nice hey cathi 🙏❤️
Those stones are a beautiful mix of pattern and color. Excellent work, bit of a dicey process to get the goods.
Hearty greetings from Georgian Bay, Ontario Justin! These two stones are just wonderful. It seems an more unusal colour combination - really luv it. Good luck with these two! Thanks so much for sharing your masterful craftsmanship! MQH :-)
I get it that clean stones are "better" - but I really love the "picture" that opal showed - before AND after slicing (and even befor cutting!) I can't afford it anyway, but if I could, I would absolutely buy a pendant with such a picture (=potchlines and spots) in it 😍 - I would actually prefer it to a cleaner, but smaller stone.
Justin , Sir , you always amaze me the way you can bring out the beauty in these Opals !
I thought you might have gotten 3 stones from it! I saw how thin the color was on the one stone. So glad it turned out well! Thanks for making my Monday the best!😊. ❤ to all at BOD
9:59 Sometimes you get lucky.... However, as the saying goes, the more you practice, the luckier you get! And you've been practicing for years!!
Honestly, those might be some of my favorites that you've cut. Beautiful. Sorry I missed the gem and mineral show - had a bunch of family stuff pop off that was problematic. Hopefully next year. It's almost here, really.
I really enjoyed watching this video. It was a real nail biter!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work 😊
You say luck, but it's your knowledge of opal and making a good call more of your amazing talent and skills. I really enjoy watching your videos. And the rough I've gotten from you i dont regret at all cheers justin i hope you continue to be blessed and anxiously await your next video
Two amazing stones, thank you.
The goat returns 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thanks again!
It is a real tribute to your father that you continue to use his lighter every time you mount the gems for polishing. The history of your family's investment in opal adds to the provenance of the process and the final stones. I ❤ your work.
Wow, thank you
Thank you, Justin.
Those came out gorgeous ,so much fun watching you ! Thanks for the beautiful gems and your wonderful personality ! ❤
That was edge of your seat business right there🤯🤯🤯 Awesome outcome considering!!!!
Thanks for sharing ✌😎✌
Two magnificent stones, great work Justin!
There were so many ups and downs, it felt like riding a roller coaster...lol. Nice stones!
Wow. You pulled it off!!!! Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow! You really know what you are doing! Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Gorgeous gems!
Stunning!!!!!
You showed us what expertise, experience and being a master at cutting and polishing is all about in this video Justin. Beautiful gems, only with your skill did you end up with the most stunning gems. I love the feather pattern very much. Great video Justin, thank you and Black Opal Direct for allowing us a peak into your world of opal cutting....... until next week....
Yay glad you enjoyed again top cat
So well done! My favorite color. You have such talent and skill.
It was really close call, amazing work and stones thank you for sharing!
Hi BOD and friends. Lovely pair of opals. Had me worried though. Great result. Greetings from Dimboola, in Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.
Justin, these gems are amazing! As are you ;-)
Looks amazing ❤ doing a great job as always 😊
Beautiful stones. The Master has done it again 👏👏👍😊
Thank you so much 👍
Your finished pieces in this video quite literally brought tears to my eyes. Opals and chrisoprase are my all-time favorite gemstones. And I've wondered (not for the first time) if you've cut very much chrisoprase? I bought a few pounds from an Aussie online dealer, and loved it! Some nice clear 'Granny Smith' apple green! And it was beautifully translucent to boot! I love your channel man, and thanks for the education too. Semper Fi,
-Stonebutcher
Love these ones
I think those are some of the Prettiest ones I have seen in a long time
nice save thank you for sharing the adventure and information 😀 ❤this was awesome.
these videos are like the ultimate for relaxing my anxious mind. Watching these amazing stones develop reminds me of the possibilities the world has to offer. It's a beautiful day to be alive!
Glad you enjoy it!
Stunning stones.
The pattern reminds me quite a bit of some patterns made by the ice crystals in my frozen bubbles at times. Very pretty.
Very nice gems. Your problem solving dialogue is quite helpful/informative!
This is pure art...
Amazing nice work and rewarding result… 😊
Hello from Germany. It's sooo nice to watch you cutting opals. Sorry, I'm more of a turquoise lover. Happy greetings from Germany
You can be a turquoise lover. That's what makes us all unique
Love all your stuff, but this one nearly made me as happy as the Eels win on Sunday. 😜
Great video! Couple of stunning stones!
Glad you enjoyed
I think sometimes the black potch should be counted as another color...it makes the pattern and color "pop"!
That was a challenging one.
A master class with a real pro.
Good on ya mate!
🙏
They need to be a matching pendant and ring set!! ❤
The feather pattern is beautiful. That was quite nervy, especially after seeing just how thin the colour bar was! Two beauties expertly uncovered.
Beautiful stones, your passion for opal always comes through in these videos 👍❤️
Thank you very much!
Well done, Sir - and team! Thoroughly satisfying, engaging video. Thank you for sharing your talent, your opals, and your heart.
Glad you enjoyed it Mandy
