Important point: the facial weakness just means the facial nerve (cranial nerve 7) is affected. This can be from many things, but ‘bells palsy’ is the diagnosis when doctors can’t find a specific cause for why the nerve is affected. So this may be Bell’s palsy or something else they can identify as the trigger (virus, trauma, autoimmune, etc etc)
COVID vaccine or booster 💉 related? 🤔 Not trying to start a conspiracy but is palsy a side effect of a COVID vaccine or booster 💉?
Currently taking anatomy in highschool and we just started the cranial nerves so I actually understand what you're saying 😅
Woj just tweeted that he has Bell’s palsy. Good call
@@Myaaa-kf2wek
@@Shinobi33Extremely unlikely. Not impossible there are side effects but, I don’t know if this is a side effect of a vaccine. This is possible tho.

Being Sixers fans doesn't give us better access to Embiids medical records😂
They are going to drain some fluid off his face but then actually they inserted fluid into it

COVID. I had Bells Palsy back in 2019 and it was brought on by covid virus.
Reminds me of Jim Ross when he first dealt with Bell’s Palsy in WWF / WWE
5:10 did Embiid's open left eye without the pupil visible remind you of The Undertaker too?
The just said it’s Bell’s palsy
WOJ confirmed in twitter that its a bells palsey. Great analysis doc!
Average analysis any medical professional should knoe
Sutterer didn’t believe it was Bell’s Palsy before, but another doctor in his comments said it was BP before the Sixers revealed it. Watch the video posted before this video and go into the comments.
@@timeflies313 yes i saw that comment too, when I first noticed embiid’s face last night I thought about that comment
100% Bell's Palsy, I was diagnosed with the same issue 8 weeks ago. My face looks exactly the same. It's tough to fully close your affected eye, so I am shocked he is not wearing eye protection. Also, the cranial nerve 7 is connected to the nerve that produces eye tears, so your eye is constantly dry (you can easily scratch your cornea). Initial treatment is a combination of Prednisone and an antiviral called Valtrex. Total respect for Embiid. Bell's Palsy can be caused by Lyme disease, Cold Sore (Herpes simplex virus), Stress, Diabetes, and more. The funny thing is that there is no way to diagnose you with Bell's Palsy; they need to test for everything in the book that can cause face paralysis, and if everything comes back negative, then you will get the Bell's Palsy Diagnosis. 8 Weeks and counting hopefully Embiid heals without any issue.
I don't know why they call it a mild case, maybe because the eye and the mouth are not sagging. For me, a mild case will last 3 or 4 weeks, but there is no way to predict the outcome. In some cases you never regain full movement of that side of your face.
Hope you get well soon
My buddy got Bell Palsy overnight, it was insane how suddenly one side of the face greatly weaken. Lucky, he recovered after a year or so

As someone who has had Bell's palsy twice, from the images shown, it would appear that is what he is suffering from. Treatment is very simple and requires steroids to reduce the inflammation that is causing issues with the 7th cranial nerve. As long as he is receiving some sort of treatment the prognosis should be very good for a full recovery. This is something that you can still play with and still heal from at the same time.
Steroids are bad and atrophy adrenal glands. They raise inflammation after the rebound effect from crashing the immune system

This is one of the most intriguing subplots of the playoffs. I was rewinding/pausing whenever they showed close-ups of Embiid. How is he playing so well with this going on? How do they keep his eye hydrated? Why the silence? Itʻs all so bizarre.
I’m also wondering how they are keep the eye hydrated as well if he’s not blinking
I swear the sixers franchise (including the med staff) is crooked asl 🙄
@@Centermass007 I think he CAN blink its just not automatic. He has to intentionally blink. But probably some kind of eye or gel drops.
I sometimes see him messing with his face and i think he's closing and opening his eye lid.
There is no correlation between facial musculature and basketball skills.
Step 1: Stop trusting the team over players

Thanks doc. Every video you post is great!
My dad got bells palsy a week after he got the 2nd covid booster. It took half a year to make a full recovery.
Seriously doubt that's related. Hundreds of millions got all of the COVID-19 shots, Bells Palsy is when they CANNOT identify the issue. Nerve damage probably isn't caused by vaccines.

What a fantastic breakdown! Fantastic job!
Bells Palsy maybe? Famous wrestling announcer Jim Ross struggled with it on and off for about 5 years but it was never noticeable until he had a bad case of it in 1998 and it finally caused permeant damage to his speech and facial muscles. Before 1998 Jim would just look a bit like he had a bad case of allergies and puffiness around on side of his face but his speech was never impaired.
This! Hafthor had it too

Me too. I tried to see and I feel that camera is going off of his face so fast
it look like he had the stuff justin bieber had.
Yep, Ramsay Hunt. I had that and it sucked
That’s the scary thing about taking something that can cause auto immune issues, they can last dormant for decades waiting for something to trigger it.
Something else him and Bieber had too....
Teams do not care about players. They will "dope" them up just so they can try to win on that day. Then when you're labeled "damaged goods" its goodbye. I hope Embiid gets the help that he clearly neeeds
That’s all sports from the juniors up to professional, pieces of meat to be paraded around.
And this is exactly why I don’t understand the culture of couch potatoes shaming players for sitting out with legitimate ailments. “They get paid to play!” Ok? And if you got injured on your job you’d either sue or wanna be out for months. Relax folks.

So crazy that you addressed this bc in game 1 I believe it was 🤔 when Embid got injured. After the the dunk that he passed to himself. I had the same thought when he was on the floor. His eyes were not moving right and he generally didn't seem ok. I hope they aren't causing irreparable damage in the name of this game.

Hi, can you please cover Thatcher Demko’s injury. He was out 6 weeks with a supposed knee injury, played 1 game in the playoffs and then got hurt on a mindless play and is again out long term and now there are no reports of what really happened. He’s a goalie for the Vancouver Canucks.
Embiid Mentioned he is dealing with this in the postgame interview
Remember Justin Bieber had this exact thing only 2 years ago. He was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. It's supposed to be rare but somehow all the celebrities are getting it now?
The rates of it skyrocketed after Covid, the scariest part? Auto immune issues can lay dormant for a decade or 2..
He also had Lyme disease which causes it
What in the “safe and effective” is going on??

I saw this and your other video after the game. Immediately I was thinking Bells palsy. My brother has this as a teenager and it was shocking to say the least. Prayers for Joel and his health. Eventually it's time to retire. You have enough money and opportunity to live peacefully and lower the chances of serious medical issues. When you look at the life span of people that size it's unfortunately much shorter than smaller ppl. He's had a lot of medical issues in his young age and his longevity should be more important than anything else
I had Bells Palsy in September. It affectted my vision, balance and caused excessive eye drainage. The ear and jaw pain was nearly unbearable at times. It felt like the affected side of my face was in a vice. BP tested my sanity. I spent two weeks on bedrest and made a full recovery but felt really fatigued for about a month after my face returned. When my face was wonky I didn't want to socialize and I had some depression due to the pain and frustration of difficulty eating. He should wear goggles to protect his eye, my doctors stressed this. Embiid is crazy tough and amazing to play through this condition.

Dr. Sutterer, wouldn’t his eye get very dry every few minutes too from being unable to blink?
He kind of addressed it in the previous video, where he talked about the difference between blinking and intentionally “scrunching” your eye closed, which is probably what Embiid is doing. Try to “blink” with just 1 eye, it’s hard, but you can always just your cheek up and your eyebrow down
