One of the charms of Dark Shadows was that even minor characters were made interesting. I believe the Caretaker first appeared when Victoria Winters felt compelled (probably under the influence of the ghost of Josette) to investigate the tomb of "Phoenix" Laura Collins. The charcter of the old man added a really creepy aspect to the show.

Yea, in grade school in 1887 he told his teacher that he would be the caretaker on Dark Shadows and drive Barnabas insane.

I think that the cemetery caretaker’s formal black suit must have really smelled of moth balls after wearing it for over 70 years.

I love the way Barnabas almost made it slip that he was Sarah's brother. Very well done.

Barnabas was serving shade almost as good as Roger! Both had successful relationships until they were as old as this caretaker. Bravo and thank you for your wonderful work on Dark Shadows and for allowing your characters to come out of the shadows every once in a while to allow your true colors to show. “Please old man!”

This scene very underrated for its comical aspects. Between Barnabas impatience and the old farts fear of dead spirits you can't help but to be delightfully entertained.

I love this meaningless scene. Back in 1967 I bet the old man was paid only like $25 to $50. Best gravekeeper in USA television history too.

Barnabas is very annoyed with this old fart. However, he played a perfect graveyard keeper. I think he was on an handful of episodes, but should have been on many more.

The scenes with the caretaker are great. He takes one look at Barnabas and freaks out asking "are you a ghost"? Barnabas really could've given him a heart attack saying I'm a vampire.

The unnamed Eagle Hill Cemetery caretaker/archivist was like the captain of a ship, who never left his ship. I don’t think the old codger was ever seen in Collinsport, like at the Collinsport Inn having lunch or even enjoying a Shirley Temple at the Blue Whale Tavern.
The caretaker was portrayed by character actor Daniel Keyes. Mr. Keyes was replaced as the caretaker on DS (along with actor Robert Gerringer, the second Dr. Dave Woodard), after both men refused to cross a union picket line in front of ABC studios in NYC.
You can also see Mr. Keyes in the film, “I Never Sang For My Father,” where he portrays a doctor, who takes Gene Hackman on a tour of especially depressing nursing homes for Gene Hackman’s recently widowed father (actor Melvin Douglas).
Gene Hackman should have instead taken his dad to Dr. Julia Hoffman’s own hospital, Windcliff, imo.

his impatience is understandable. david was trapped in the mauseleum for 2 days with no food or water. if he wasnt found within the next 24 hrs give or take, his kidneys wouldve shut down, and hed die of organ failure. i guess if Barnabas was thinking of that as well as the possibility of David knowing his secret, id b pretty impatient as well. to think, my little brother is 9yrs old rn, same age as David at the time this was filmed. if it were my little brother that was trapped somewhere, id be desperate to find him and provide medical care when found

When David and later also Maggie Evans were trapped in the secret room of the Collins Mausoleum for several days, just what did they do when they each had to observe “nature’s call”?
Maybe young David and the lovely Ms. Evans used Barnabas’ empty coffin to “do their business”?
