Interesting discussion, the acid test for your question, possibly was the battle for Geikenkirchen, General Horrocks was given the American 84th Division, new to the theatre he added his best armoured brigade the SRY under Stanley Christopherson , Crocodiles and Flails from 79th Armour and a strong element of Artillery. He rated the 84th soldiers highly.so three very experienced British Army units working with a new American infantry unit. The first shock, was when he went to see the Divisional Commander, they had never seen their 3 star general at the sharp end.

There is a good book called "If you Survive" by Goerge Wilson. It depicts the authors service with the 4th ID during WWII. He joined the Division as a freshly minted 2nd Lieutenant just days before Operation Cobra. He fought with the division through the rest of the war. But its interesting his perspective on officers training. As a leader of a rifle platoon, they never discussed combined arms warfare during training so he was forced to figure it out as he went along. Provides an interesting perspective from the Infantryman's side of combined arms warfare.

If what I read on wikipedia is correct, there is yet further reorganisation of the Brigade Combat Teams concept. The Heavy Brigade the Chieftan was talking about used to have 3 combined arms battalions, each having 2 each of tank companies and mechanised infantry. It seems that the recent reorg (2016) changed so that each battalion now has only 3 companies. A Heavy Brigade now has 2 Armoured Battalions, each having 2 x Tank Companies and 1 x Mechanised Infantry Company, and 1 Mechanised Infantry Battalion, each having 1 x Tank Company and 2 x Mechanised Infantry Company. This reorg eliminated 2 x Mechanised Infantry Companies and 1 x Tank Company. The Mech. Infantry was eliminated from the Brigade while the Tank Company is moved to the Cavalry Battalion. This makes the Brigade having a combined arms recon unit; sort of similar to the Forward Detachment concept of the Red Army.
If you want to know what happens to Mechanised Infantry in a 21st century high intensity conflict (not the counter-insurgency wars), then there is really only one place: War in the Donbass, Ukraine. One of the problem with looking at this war is the fact that the open source information available is really one-sided and with certain political motivation behind it. Anyway, the open sources included:
    - Presentation "Dr. Phillip Karber on the Russian Way of War" available on YT, under Modern War Institute channel.
    - "Karber RUS-UKR War Lessons Learned", de-classified report, available on ResearchGate.
Some trends related to mechanised infantry:
    - Indirect fire by artillery tubes and MLRS firing thermobaric fuel-air explosive and top-attack cluster munition married with UAVs infesting the 21st century battlefield are very lethal. If casualty of WWII is ~50% cause by artillery, it seems that the rate climbed to 70-80%. Unconcealed mechanised manoeuvres are expected to be fired upon about 15 minutes after being spotted by UAVs.
    - Mechanised infantry riding in light IFVs and APCs (BTRs and BMPs) still suffer disproportionate casualties compared to the tanks they are supposed to accompany. These vehicles are vulnerable to artillery fire (tubes and MLRS, thermobaric and top-attack cluster munitions); the most dramatic of which is the fire strike at Zelenopillya where a shelling lasting only a few minutes destroyed 2 Ukrainian mechanised battalions in the open. In Karber's words, the Ukrainians had to create a new triage level for casualties "when your friend is on fire and begs you to shoot him to put him out of his misery". They are also vulnerable to each other, since these IFV are all armed with 25-30mm cannnons capable of killing each other. ATGMs also flooded the battlefield.
    - The casualties from light IFV being destroyed and burned up after getting hit resulted in troops from both sides currently prefer to ride into battle in tankodesantniki mode: riding on top of their IFV instead of being inside it. They would prefer to disperse and take the chances with shrapnel wounds (they have body armour) and thermobaric warheads than burning to death inside a vehicles. Assaults are still done by dismounted infantry. not mounted. IFVs are employed in overwatched positions, not assaulting to the objective.
    - The remedy for increase lethality has been historically dispersion of combat forces: the troop density in Ukraine is only a fraction of the historically assumed density. Light IFVs in the future might carry only half a squad (dispersion). Alternatively, IFVs need to be as heavily armoured as the tanks (Israeli's NAMER IFV or Russian T15).

Do Armoured Fighting Vehicles attrack enemy fire that kills their infantry support OR do the AFV's and support infantry simply have more hazardous duty ?
I suspect that the casualties in AFV Support Infantry are do to being used in hazardous offensive combat roles vs the defensive use of ground pounding infantry.
Either way.... Might be a Topic.

The infantry always have the most hazardous duty usually its fire support like mortars and artillery the gives the infantry hell. Killing or holding them down enough to get the infantry separated from the tanks.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that opening statement, unless you're talking about the Bren/Scout/Universal carriers, which were really only partially armored. The various half-tracked APCs from the US and Germany pre-date the Kangaroos, and the first full-tracked APCs to enter service were the French ones in 1938.

    • @johnburns4017
      @johnburns4017 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheChieftainsHatch
The Kangaroo initially based on the Churchill. Shermans had their turrets removed to just pile men inside. The allies were not short of tanks. The tanks were not as good as German tanks in many cases, but they had lots of them. Montgomery cared for his men under his command, British, Canadian, American, Poles, etc. Casualties were always lighter than American and German armies. Some US casualties were horrendous in WW2: 52,000 in Lorraine, 34,000 at Hurtgen Forest, 1000,000 at the Bulge alone. In the Scheldt, the Canadian casualties were far less than anticipated using Kangaroos. They were first used in Normandy.
A Kanagroo was based on a Grant chassis. The Grant was outdated by the time Normandy came along, so those chassis' were rife for conversion. The chassis' were also used for mounting artillery guns on.
The best Kangaroo was the converted Churchill. They had side doors and I believe the top was covered on some of them. The Churchill could climb to places no other tank could, like up steep hills and small mountains. The Merritt Brown gearbox assured all that. It could also turn on its axis, so ideal as an armoured personnel carrier.
WW1 ended, for the armoured personnel carrier to be used, although invented for the 1919 plan. What amazes me is that the idea was not used for the outbreak of WW2.
