  • Another great day running the Wolfe Ridge 35 Super High Output Box Wedge with the prototype 2x4 wedge. I’m really liking this wedge design for bundle wood. It is producing at least 1/2 as many 4x4’s than the standard 3.5”x3.5” box wedge which is perfect for my customers.
    If you’d like to see this machine up close head on over to Wolfe Ridge in Eau Claire Wisconsin on Saturday June 22nd from 8am - 5pm. I’ll be there along with a few other TH-cam channels and of course all the cool products from Wolfe Ridge and Stihl.
    Have a great day Around the Yard!

    Love your reasoning and techniques for your splits and getting less slash from each piece. 👍 Thanks for sharing and enjoy YOUR Sunday Brent.👍🪵

      Are you feeling jealous of the SHO BW splitter yet with all those wedge options?

      Doing well indeed. Daughter has had Softball 🥎 so we are doing a little more of that on the weekends and a little less firewood. Perfecting the process is the name of the game now. How is the Eastonmade treating you? I really need to make a point to get my conveyor up and running this summer.

    Whatever size, sure saves a lot of labor with the big rounds.

      That is the best selling point of a box wedge… Handle the wood less on every stroke and make consistent sized pieces that your customers want to buy. Have a great Day Around the Yard! - Brent

    Is good info for those considering going with, or considering, the SHO BW. I'm thinking for me the VSC is the best overall compromise.

      I’m hoping for some runtime on a 17VS or 17VS-C at the Midwest Firewood Frenzy next Saturday June 22 from 8am-5pm @ Wolfe Ridge MFG. I really like the idea of having very precise splits to work around grain imperfections. I generally don’t have that much control, though I may have a solution, still testing that though. Are you making the trip to the Frenzy?

    • @thefirewooddoctor
      @thefirewooddoctor 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @AroundTheYard-MN going to wait and see. I'm so far behind on cleaning up my woodyard that I might not go. When it rained nearly every day during my vacation last week, then recovering from dehydration, not sure if I'll go. Definitely not going if a customer calls me for a 2 facecord order. Gotta get the log bill paid off!

      @AroundTheYard-MN  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With the release of the conveyor for the commercial horizontal machines, I think you have to go and see what that’s all about. 😊 the woodyard will be there next week too. 😉

      @AroundTheYard-MN I'm going with a Facebook friend. Met up at my woodyard for him to see how the 12-way wedge worked. While the attached conveyor isn't ideal, I'd like another 2ft of length, it will load my truck that I use as a wheelbarrow.

    Great video. That 2❌4 box wedge looks to be a great wedge. I sale the kindling as a bagged product. I keep it all separate. Drys super quick. And I agree, the kindling pieces burn 🔥 great. I have a question? Your log cradle the length of it is around 25 inches. ????
    25 1/4 inch ??? Your running on the 24 inch stroke ?? Have a great weekend

    • @AroundTheYard-MN
      @AroundTheYard-MN  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have the stroke limiter set at 24 inches, but the actual stroke I think is 26 1/4. From the front of the push plate to the front of the wedge is 26 1/4 inches

      Thanks buddy. I don’t have all the time in the world to spend splitting wood, so I try and make the best of the time I do get and try to be the most efficient with it. Take care Sir, & have a great day Around the Yard. We have a. Softball Tournament tomorrow, but if I can manage to get the splitter fired up I’ll double check the other measurements for you and drop them here for the 18” & 30” stroke.

      @@AroundTheYard-MN sounds great. A measurement I really would like to have is your, cradle length. Your cradle should be typical to my machine. If you could just verify some time this weekend no hurry at all. I understand you have a busy schedule. Thank you again. And go hit a home run.

      I haven’t forgotten about this yet, it’s on my to do list, just got back from the Frenzy in Wisconsin at Wolfe Ridge, I’ll try and make a point to get out to the shed in the morning to check on this for you.

    It sounds under powered.

    • @AroundTheYard-MN
      @AroundTheYard-MN  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Alex, it’s got a 25hp Honda v-twin EFI 800cc. It far from under powered, but I can see where you might think that. In my experience the smaller the split size, and the bigger or more twisted the round the harder the machine works. But it works and gets the job done in 1 pass. A lesser machine with less flow and HP would give up trying to force six pieces through this wedge. On occasion this machine will also give up on very snarly rounds, but that’s my fault, the operator. A box wedge isn’t designed for snarly wood, it excels with relatively straight grain. Hope you have a great day Around the Yard.

    My opinion, the box wedge makes a ot of waste & very ugly wood. I think a 4-6-8 way splitter makes better looking firewood to sell, just my opinion. I understand you are working with ugly wood. TY for sharing.

    • @AroundTheYard-MN
      @AroundTheYard-MN  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You definitely have to like the look of square shaped pieces to want to run a box wedge. If you roll the log 90 degrees on each pass at least on the first four, you’ll get the traditional triangles that you’re used to seeing, but after that they are all virtually rectangles.
      If my customer base was fireplace wood or something more oriented towards bulk wood fractions of a face cord or more, I’d be exclusively running the 12way wicked wedge.
      Truth be told the more cutting edges the more waste is created. The box wedge I run has effectively 7 edges (top & bottom + 5 in between) 4way has 2 edges, 6way has 4 edges. 12way has 8 edges. This is in part why the new vertical splitters are so popular right now, single knife/ single edge and minimal waste with the most control over shape of the end product.
      I’m hoping for an opportunity to demo a vertical machine to run head to head with the box wedge for some real life comparisons. Thanks for stopping by, hope you have a great day Around the Yard! Brent

      I really like the 2x4 size. Should be able to get close to a dozen in a 1 cu ft bag plus some bigger fuel and some smaller triangles and kindling. I should really give that a try and see what fits.
