It's funny....I've bought probably 6 drivers since the last time I replaced my irons about 11 years ago. I had myself all talked up that it was probably about time I replace the irons. Then stumble across this vid - after watching probably near 100 clips on the various iron reviews and comparisons out there....and suddenly my old trusty Callaways maybe aren't done yet. Maybe I'm better putting the $1500+ into lessons instead.
These are my favorite types of videos. On average, I like to buy a new set once every 5-6 years or so. So it’s awesome to see how far sets progress throughout the years. Very well done.
Titleist seems to be one of the companys that really make their products better. Other brands just say it is better and it is new but a lot of tests show that they can not improve. However Titleist seems to improve their drivers and irons everytime they come out.
I just bought got an original set of ap2 for $200 love them. after watching this video. I think I saved money. the price of a current set of titleist is not worth the extra 10 yards...IMO the original ap2 are considered the best irons ever made by many still...this video might prove this claim...
@@mrveritas700 I agree, and guess what? If you need an extra 10 yards, then club up! The shots he hit with the original AP2's were just as good accuracy wise and spin-wise so I think the upgrade is not worth it at this point. I am going to keep rocking with my original AP2's for quite a while longer.
I went to TXG and was fitted by Ian into the T100's with Tour Issue S400's 120g and I love them. My previous set was Titleist 710MB with S300's and I gained a full club in distance with the same lofts. If you have a chance, I highly recommend getting yourself to TXG, all the fitters are amazing!
Matt is better than any robot in terms of the ability to not just be consistent with swing but also provide the subjective commentary on feel that no robot can provide today even with AI !! Amazing to watch. Thanks also for occasionally having a low swing speed golfer provide information on clubs for the mid to higher handicapers!
This video is as ideal as it gets for me. I’ve been gaming the original ap2s for the last couple years and have been looking into the t100 or possibly even the t100s and was curious to how differently they perform! This gave me some great insight, thanks.
Then: Those irons didn't fit your swing at all and Matt changes swing over two years. Now: Old irons are striped = Matt can hit anything with his new awesome swing.
Nearly got a tear in my eye at the start of this. You boys are coming up on your 2 year anniversary. I know it's not an even match up but hit the new Mizuno MP20 MMC 7 iron a couple of days ago against my TM Speedblade. 4 yards longer with the MMC which was 2 degrees weaker. Just need to justify $500 AU per yard as value for money.
I'm currently gaming the AP2 710s! I also fitted myself nearly 11 years ago (also a lefty) and looking forward to updating - will be calling you guys to book something for 2021 in the coming days!
I got the 710 AP2 3 iron and gonna get a 4 and 5 iron for cheap and bend em 2 degrees strong. Good to see that in 10 years the difference is good to see.
I recently got fitted after following your channel for several months. I walked into the fitting and the fitter was impressed with my knowledge and the questions I asked. I am a high handicapper and I was gaming the old Adams A2 OS hybrid irons and ended up with going with the Titleist T300. I gained 20 yards (granted lofts are about a club stronger from 8 iron through 4 iron) so I effectively picked up a club in distance. I was blown away by the differences and actually had to start playing longer tees because of the distance I gained throughout the bag. Love the channel.
I guess it's time for me to upgrade my 2007 Nike Ignites, lol. Replaced my sand wedge with a 56 degree Mack Daddy and Rouge Draw driver this year and saw immediate improvements. Thanks for this video. Very insightful and showing how much club technology has come in 5 years let alone 12 years.

I have been gaming Mizuno MX-20’s since 2000-2001(?). I can’t imagine what a similar exercise will look like with me! I’ve been waiting until the end of the season to go get some new sticks....
seminolekilla, you’re exactly correct! I’ve been comparing lofts of the new clubs to my mx-20’s and some of them are an entire club stronger; e.g. the JPX Hot Metals! One of the biggest issues I’ve had in trying to get new irons is the offset increase on nearly every cavity back iron! The Titleist AP2’s have been the closest looking in offset. Even the mx-23’s have more offset than my mx-20’s...
So I also have the original year of AP2. Still awesome! I had replaced them with the 714. Was planning on a "2019/20 AP2" for a third set but the T100 line came out in 2019! Drat... so much confusion! I'm now very tempted to purchase a set of 718 AP2s at a discount since being the last year of this tremendous series of irons for Titleist! I have hit the T100 / T200 but not sure I am all in on the T series yet with the emergence of the other players distance P790, MP20 HMB and Ping i500 / Blueprint combo. So many great options in players distance these days!!
Oh, to be 29 years old again! I didn’t start playing golf until I was 36 or 37 years old, and am now 70. When I was in my late 30s-early 40s, I was hitting the ball 25 yards further with every iron in my bag (even with the Golden Ram and Hogan Apex blade irons of the late 1980s). Now, at age 70, I am about 18 to 20 MPH slower and 24 to 26 yards shorter with my 6-iron than Matt is with the T100.
New sub here. I have the 712's.. picked them up used on Ebay a while back and they immediately helped my game. Now I'm a 7-9 handicap month to month. I have no business buying new clubs but this REALLY makes me want to go get fitted for a new set. Love the channel guys! Wallet says otherwise.
Well done Matty. See the old swing vs the new swing was, as you gents like to put it "interesting." I wish I had videos of my golf swing from years back. The one thing I can assure all is: my stomach was a lot flatter....lol. As for my 10+ -year-old Hogan Apx blades, they are in my closet and will most likely not see daylight for some time. With respect to the Titlist irons..old vs new: well-done Titlist you kept it "real."
so ... 9 yards longer. i play 10 year old AP2's and i'm delighted with how they play. they still look gorgeous and feel gorgeous. i want 9 more yards, I club up. all this performance thing does not move me to change clubs - i leave that to the pro's
Well...I must say that with my decade old CG16's and my 6, 8, and PW all having different shafts with not only different grips but different sized grips as they were replaced by a small shop with no measurements taken....and I just fitted myself on the internet in the first place for the set.....it's time for some new irons. I'm fairly consistently in the 78-83 range... hopefully get properly fit somewhere here in NB and get a new set. Watching your videos has made me lose confidence in my mismatched set for sure haha! It has given me a good push though. Great material.
11 years, HA. Still playing Ping Eye 2s. Called up Ping mine are from 1988. Joking aside, I would love to upgrade. Student loans, wife, kids, mortgage, and every other bill you could imagine just won't let me sink 1500/2000 into a fitting and new irons.

I just switched from taylormade rac os to the ap2 710. i absolutely love the ap2 and wont be switching for a while (or until there's a good flood of cheaper t100 on the used market)
What a drastic difference in Matt's swing. Matt are you still training with Larry? If so you just gave him the best advertisement. Kudos to Matt for being a good student and applying Larry's instruction. Kudos to Larry for his technique and articulating his thoughts to Matt. Kudos to TXG for bringing it all together and sharing such great info.
Fun video! It's amazing how so much has changed, yet so little. While the extra ball speed in the irons is great, I wonder if it would actually lower the average golfers scores.
Curtis Polysou what’s an average golfer ~ 54 start handicap to scratch ? I can confirm that the latest models have helped a PAL 24 h.cap beat his best score by 10 shots within weeks of purchase.....
As always loving the videos guys. Would be interested to see if you did another test with Matt's gamer shaft in the old club head and then test each head against each other with same shaft. Curious to see if the numbers would come out any different.
Good to see guys. You swing has shortened by about 2feet as well Matt something I'm actually working as well to gain a bit more accuracy and already noticing longer balls too!!
So....you're saying my 2005 Titleist 755's might be due for a refresh? It's actually going to be a little sad to take them out of the bag but this video is going to finally push me to do it.
I have a great set of ping s56 irons. Play a lot of golf. Not 10 yrs old more like 6-7 but wondering how much I’m leaving on the table vs a new set of iblades let’s say
Probably not leaving anything on the table. If you are good enough to play those s56 irons, you would probably get worse changing irons before adjusting and getting back to same level (or getting frustrated and going back to your s56s). I know a guy who was a very good player (10-12) that played with Hogan blades. He got some new irons and is not better.
Enjoyed the video but really should have identical shafts for a fair comparison. Also, they didn't discuss why the T100 rolled 7 yards compared to 2 yards for the AP2. That's a big difference. I'm curious about the landing angle.
After seeing this video, I’m not worried about where to invest in updating my bag. Just getting used to my Cobra Amp Forged irons I picked up tail end of last season. I realize these will be fine for now, and I can focus more on the top end, or hey maybe a putter! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about when to update older driver... My Nike Covert Tour 2.0 is probably due next! Thank you boys, appreciated that.
Stu Cox - you gotta try a putter fitting! It was awesome!!! They have ‘smash factor’ for putters!!!! Who knew!?!?!???? Ok, TXG, True Spec, some others.... THEY knew.... lol
Great video.. and exactly the topic/question that I had been wondering about in my personal search for new irons. (still rocking forged Hogan blades: apex ftx from 2004... Jim Furyk for the win!!!) Was going to try to grab some AP2's 718 once their prices drop a bit. I think this video proves that maybe it IS a good idea to change iron sets, oh, at least every 8-ish years.. instead of holding onto the past for too long.. for the average weekend-warrior golfer anyways. :)
I just recently switched to the new T100's from my Titleist 710MB blades and love them. The 2018 AP2's were awesome as well, but I figured since I only switch irons every 10 years I would get the latest!
I think this question all depends on how often you play and how much you improve. I made a mistake last year and got fit for clubs that do not fit me now because my swing has changed and improved so much within the past year. I'll play with the ones I have now, but i'll probably replace in 5 years.
Do you think the shaft had anything to do with the increased yardage? No doubt the face is “hotter” on the T100, just wondering what effect the different shaft made.
Me Too, I have 712 AP2's as my "new set" but i like the higher ball flight of the OG AP2's just seem to stick more greens Yeah I could probably get a little more distance but Im 55 and still hit my 6 185 (7 Index) just feel the 2008 AP2's are just easy to hit
we somehow have identical lives - that's crazy - I left the game 18 years ago with injury playing C300 forged irons hitting a Titleist Profession 90 with a 7 iron 155 and now i'm hitting a combo set of Mizuno Hot Metal Pros and Mizuno HMB and hitting a weakened lofted 7 iron of 32 degrees with a Titleist ProV1 173 carry
How much of these is shaft. This would be much more beneficial if you used the same shaft. I get that the LZ 6.5 is close to px6.0 maybe on paper but i can speak from experience and being fit at TXG they arent. I cant even hit px 5.5 well. The LZ produced the most Ballspeed for me due to the LZ however it had consistency issues for me. But was definetly faster then other shafts.
I'm pretty sure the added distance is due to the different shaft not the technology changes in the irons. A little bit higher swing speed and less spin makes a big difference.
My current irons are 12 years old (TM R7 CGB MAX Irons) They weren't fit for me originally, but I can't afford the $1500+ for a new set so i'd love to replace them but it isn't possible right now.
I wonder how this would work for my Ping Eye2 irons. I tried to replace them once and was fitted for G10s which were about 5 yards longer per club. However, I reverted to the old reliables as the G10s seemed clunky.
Started playing 1995 at the age of 41, I have 1996 big berths irons, still hit my 7i 150yds. My friend says I need to get clubs made in this century. 18 cup. Thinking of Sterling same length, all suggestions are appreciated
Is that the original shaft in the ap2 from all those years ago? Is it possible that a shaft can lose “pop” after a long period of time? Wondering if that could be a contributing factor in the huge gains of the t100
Hey guys! How much of the gains would you attribute to the technology in the head and how much would you say is the shaft? Just curious because I'd assume with a lot of irons like MB's or something like the 785's that the tech never changes that you'd really be looking for advancements in shaft technology and a shaft that matches the evolution of your swing? Just curious and would love if you can comment your thoughts on that. Or maybe a head to head with the same shaft to see exactly what the increases can be attributed to and how much. Really great test though. I hadn't updated my clubs since 2005 because I hadn't played much over the last 10-12years! Full bag fitting this year and first time being custom fit and I'm full on addicted to the game again. Drastic difference.
PX spun too much for him before? A little worried about the set I just ordered then, I'm a terrible wind player as well. What other recommendations would you have for high speed high spin players?
reference to too much spin was from 2 years ago, swing was significantly different (steeper, more dynamic loft). PX is not going to generate extra spin.
technology has come a long way in 10 years, would be worth going to a demo day or fitting session to compare your irons to something newer and see if there's performance improvements
@@clubchampionmedia I was fitted lately for the new p770: compared to my 5yrs old gamers (apex cf16), numbers were not so different. But, they’re so beautiful I couldn’t help to order them... I will soon have two sets: I’ll just keep my old ones for my son who just started playing, so I’ll still have them on hand as back up, after bad rounds...
I play off 6 and have been using ping g15 irons 4-LW with stiff awt shafts for many years. I’m as accurate and long as anyone I play with. Not sure anyone needs to upgrade. It’s just weather you want to or not. Or believe the marketing or not.
Matt Nardone I think you need to see Matt hitting different shafts a few weeks ago with the same club ~ short story ~ no difference in distance ~ dispersion however was interesting
I am beginning to believe there is more ball speed coming from technology in modern irons than just jacked up lofts alone. That's fine but what has not changed is accuracy and especially front/back dispersion. There are several tests that continue to show that dispersion is tighter with player cavity backs and blades than modern game improvement irons. So what does technology get you in scoring irons? More distance but not necessarily more control. I'm not convinced that distance alone necessitates a change in equipment.
Sure, tbf, Ian has mentioned many times before: It's about accuracy with irons not distance. And the dispersion was tighter with the T100s on this little test. But then again, neither of those clubs were fitted for Matt. After all this test was about the technology. For whatever reason Matt had 1.2° less dynamic loft and more club head speed with the T100s. So the test is inconclusive. I think T100 had a little more pop inside the club head than the AP2 (2008) but not from this test just because I assume their R&D didn't sleep for 11 years. LOL But many thanks for the test anyway, it was enough to convince me not to ditch my 12-year-old blades ;-)
Andy, replaced my 2002ish DCI 990B Irons (fitted back then) with 718 AP2 5-9, 2 years ago. Went from 2* Upright to 1* Flat. 983 E 9.5 Driver to a 917 D2 10.5
Now I want to see how my twenty year old MP-30s stack up against the MP-20s... Here I assumed iron technology hadn't really advanced (outside of manufacturers strengthening the lofts to pretend they added distance).
This is not really surprising golf technology has come a long way, but is it really worth it? OEMs prices have slowly increased. A set of irons is around $1400! For 1 one club less distance you could buy a set for less than half that. To each their own I guess.
Jordan Burke thats what Im looking on now.. They should test it with a same shafts... I tried Rifle and LZ. I had better smash factor with LZ.. better ball flight because my tempo is not super fast and was hitting LZ further.. so it makes that difference I guess
The perfect video to justify me replacing my original AP2’s with a new set. Video link sent to wife for her viewing pleasure. Thanks men!
Trevor Hunter 😂😂😂😂 I should make the same thing

Very interesting. However, to get a true feel for the differences (in the heads specifically) don’t you need to have the same exact shaft in each?
So....you're saying my 2005 Titleist 755's might be due for a refresh? It's actually going to be a little sad to take them out of the bag but this video is going to finally push me to do it.
Just clicked the thumbs up video before I watched it..........well It’s obviously gonna be great😂😂😂
I‘m still using these! Not sure if that little extra distance is worth the upgrade though...
T100 was flying the green so landed on the fairway surface a few times which in the simulator bounces higher and rolls out
After seeing this video, I’m not worried about where to invest in updating my bag.
THEY knew.... lol
I think its time for some new clubs, im currently rocking an R7 5 wood and some R11 irons.
I'm still rocking the old burner 2.0 and still hit them very well. Should I change them up or no?
I think this question all depends on how often you play and how much you improve. I made a mistake last year and got fit for clubs that do not fit me now because my swing has changed and improved so much within the past year. I'll play with the ones I have now, but i'll probably replace in 5 years.
My irons are from 1996, im about a 5 handicap. Cant wait to get some freshies, soon... soon...
TXG, EXCELLENT CONTENT!!!
I literally have original AP2s with shafts that are too weak for my current swing. Haha
How much difference do the lz's make?
Is Matty now playing the Project X LZ 6.5 shaft in his irons?
nope, just the closest we had to the PX 6.0 on the wall
Do you think the shaft had anything to do with the increased yardage? No doubt the face is “hotter” on the T100, just wondering what effect the different shaft made.
Still have those original ap2 in the bag
same here, and i can't pull them out....
Started playing again after 18 years with old TaylorMade 300 forged irons. Looks I could gain some distance :)
we somehow have identical lives - that's crazy - I left the game 18 years ago with injury playing C300 forged irons hitting a Titleist Profession 90 with a 7 iron 155 and now i'm hitting a combo set of Mizuno Hot Metal Pros and Mizuno HMB and hitting a weakened lofted 7 iron of 32 degrees with a Titleist ProV1 173 carry
@@wallstreetoneil haha, thats interesting. So I have to buy Mizuno then ;) Take it easy, hope the injury won't be a problem this time!
I have px 6.0 in the irons and LZ 6.0 in a TMB two iron, the shafts are different for sure, more of a drop kick with the LZ's.
I'm pretty sure the added distance is due to the different shaft not the technology changes in the irons. A little bit higher swing speed and less spin makes a big difference.
Matt's amazing
My current irons are 12 years old (TM R7 CGB MAX Irons) They weren't fit for me originally, but I can't afford the $1500+ for a new set so i'd love to replace them but it isn't possible right now.
I wonder how this would work for my Ping Eye2 irons. I tried to replace them once and was fitted for G10s which were about 5 yards longer per club. However, I reverted to the old reliables as the G10s seemed clunky.
Still playing Ping G10s. Wouldn’t mind getting new clubs but not a huge fan of sting lofts .. what to do?!?
Swing is looking really good! Still working with LC?
yup
It feels like y'all have an easy 10 years already; and it was Dec 2017. Not even two years ago...
T100’s on the way! Only have irons lol but I got um 😂💪🏾
Started playing 1995 at the age of 41, I have 1996 big berths irons, still hit my 7i 150yds. My friend says I need to get clubs made in this century. 18 cup. Thinking of Sterling same length, all suggestions are appreciated
Pretty cool to see the comparison side by side. Would love to see the 10yr difference in irons by Mizuno.
MP58 vs MP20 MMC would be great!
Could it be the different shaft
God, maybe another iron set change for the Machine lmao ;-)
Is that the original shaft in the ap2 from all those years ago? Is it possible that a shaft can lose “pop” after a long period of time? Wondering if that could be a contributing factor in the huge gains of the t100
same shaft, but no unless a shaft is significantly damaged it wouldn't lose performance
Thanks for the reply! Love your videos
@@clubchampionmedia Gotcha. Appreciate the reply 👍
Curious, how often would you suggest buying new irons, I play around 40 rounds per year, and have 10 yr old Adams cb2 irons.
technology has come a long way in 10 years, would be worth going to a demo day or fitting session to compare your irons to something newer and see if there's performance improvements
Did they say which iron he was hitting? 5 or 6?
Does that arm band work to reduce elbow pain for you Matt?
Yes
I play off 6 and have been using ping g15 irons 4-LW with stiff awt shafts for many years. I’m as accurate and long as anyone I play with. Not sure anyone needs to upgrade. It’s just weather you want to or not. Or believe the marketing or not.
Do one on guys who change too much
How is this a good comparison with the different shafts?
Matt Nardone I think you need to see Matt hitting different shafts a few weeks ago with the same club ~ short story ~ no difference in distance ~ dispersion however was interesting
Is the T100 in his bag? Thanks
Does 6.0 vs 6.5 stiffness contribute to the extra efficiency for a 100mph swing? 5mph jump seems a lot!
LOL
But many thanks for the test anyway, it was enough to convince me not to ditch my 12-year-old blades ;-)
@@3rdgroove, this test was about *design evolution.* Find the Current Version of your Blades and try those.
Very cool! 😎
2001 Titleist DCI's and 2005 Titleist 905 driver. 🙋🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Andy, replaced my 2002ish DCI 990B Irons (fitted back then) with 718 AP2 5-9, 2 years ago.
Went from 2* Upright to 1* Flat.
983 E 9.5 Driver to a 917 D2 10.5
Soooo, ive gpt the 714s... So I should probably wait for T100 gen2 ?
I play some blades from 1983. Wonder how much better new irons would be
Love you guys but a bit like asking a dealership if it’s time to replace my car?
What does the 718 stand for on my ap2s?
Now I want to see how my twenty year old MP-30s stack up against the MP-20s... Here I assumed iron technology hadn't really advanced (outside of manufacturers strengthening the lofts to pretend they added distance).
I have Titleist 710 mb blades from 2009 im a 8 handicap with a good swing looking to go low as possible, should i upgrade to new taylormade p7mb??
This is not really surprising golf technology has come a long way, but is it really worth it? OEMs prices have slowly increased. A set of irons is around $1400! For 1 one club less distance you could buy a set for less than half that. To each their own I guess.
When did Matt start swinging px lz’s?!
Jordan Burke thats what Im looking on now.. They should test it with a same shafts... I tried Rifle and LZ. I had better smash factor with LZ.. better ball flight because my tempo is not super fast and was hitting LZ further.. so it makes that difference I guess
18 hcp ,all my clubs are firm flex, I was young and stupid when I bought them
Do u mean stiff ?
