Yes, hammerless snubbies are #1 when it comes to conceal carry and yet there are gun talkers making videos showing their expertise in showing snubbies with hammers for conceal carry. A hammer will snag on you in the heat of a surprise attack, eliminate every disadvantage with the gun your gonna carry since autos malfunction more often than revolvers. In reality if you can`t stop the threat with 5 rounds you best run.

You could own a $3000 custom 1911 and someone online would find something negative to say about it. Taurus makes great revolvers, yes occasionally a bad one will slip past QC, but that happens with every gun company.

And hasn't happened, as much, in quite some time. They've really stepped up their game.
People tend to forget that Glock had a run of negligent discharges and Sig p320 came out NOT drop safe, and I seem to remember this p365 having some striker drag issues....
      Just saying folks.

@@AOMartialArts Like I related elsewhere in the comments, I recently looked at a Colt King Cobra the FFL couldn't open the cylinder on. Inside the frame the milling was rough and jagged. I told him he needed to send it back. That was on a $859 firearm.

@@LionquestFitness I bought a Taurus 856 with a 2" barrel. I love it. I left it cocked for a week, now it doesn't need a spring kit. I also added a couple drops of motor oil to it. It's smooth with a light hammer spring now. It performs flawless. I know Taurus gets a bad rap and I'm quite surprised that they're still in business. They released a 24/7 gun that if you just shook it in your hand it would fire. That's one of the most dangerous guns that was ever made. Yet, because they sold so many of those cheaply made rough riders, they managed to stay a float. Their quality was much better in the 90's. Their finishes look horrible compared to those made in the 90's. But for the money, their guns are well made today. even their G2c and G3c's are spectacular for their price ranges. I feel quite happy to own mine. I'd recommend Taurus to anyone on a tight budget. Great video..I had to subscribe. you also have a lovely looking granddaughter. I'm sure that she has her pawpaw wrapped around her pretty little finger. hahaha...Peace..Joe

Greg, good points. I too commit to a gun. If it is my carry gun, I wear it all the time. I keep it clean and ready. You are right about cylinder latch botton screws. Yes, blue lock tite works well. Any revolver can have one do that, regardless of brand.

Hi Mike - good points. I've some other issues fixed with loctite with both S&W and Taurus Revolvers. One that seems to shake loose sometimes on Taurus revolvers is the cylinder screw on the side plate.

Greg, glad to hear the 856 is running well. I bought a Taurus 605 awhile back (based on your recommendation) and it's been just fine. Seems to shoot pretty close to point of aim with any .38 special +p ammo I have tried and spot on with some old Federal .38 Special +p+ 147 grain JHP Hydra-Shok I have left over from the 1990s.
I'm getting the bug for an 856 airweight because, well, it's an airweight! But if my wife complains I plan on blaming you. LOL!
I will check the latch release screw on my old S&W 640 (which now mostly sits in my gun safe) because now you got me thinking. Thanks for giving us something to look forward to.

Hey John, I have an Airweight S&W in .38 cal. (Mod. 39?) and it isn't a fun gun to shoot; it somehow hits my knuckles funny. Maybe a T-Grip would help, but I don't practice with it much as a result. Keep this in mind if you buy the 856. Oh, I usually bring my 686+ with the 3-inch barrel when I go to the farm at night. @@Ed-ig7fj I suspect you have a model 49 (commonly called the humpback) with a shrouded hammer but can still be cocked? The S&W model 39 was a single stack 9mm, a fine little gun. The S&W J-frames, especially the airwrights, will knock your finger if you don't grip them really hard. I have always had to put larger grips on mine because I have big hands and long fingers. Pachmeyr diamond grips (Edit: Diamond Pro Grips) make J-frames a whole lot more useful, to me anyway, but will make them harder for some people to conceal. I have big pockets and it's a non-issue for me. BTW, if you have a model 49 that you don't like to shoot and you are in or near South Carolina, I might be willing to take her off your hands. LOL! They really are great little guns.

For over 23 years I owned, trained and qualified expert with Taurus "85s" out to 50 yards because my department required the same qualification standards with backups as it did with our service weapons. The last one I carried on AND off duty was a stainless steel 85CH loaded with 125grn Federal H-S +Ps. Upon my retirement I allowed myself to be talked into selling that revolver to a young officer who was about to embark on a long-term undercover assignment. As far as I know it is still in service with that officer who has since returned to uniform duty. I miss my old 85CH so much I am torn between using a late model S&W "Bodyguard" that both The Lovely Bride and I despise for either a new 856CH or a strictly GI 1911A1 in .45ACP.

I have been carrying my 856 UL for well over a year now. Just recently we went out offroading and crossed a river. My snubby and spare ammo were under water for some time due to us getting stuck. After firing some rounds hours later 1 round seemed to have a light primer strike. Can't say if it was the gun or the ammo but kept shooting it until it shot that round again. Once I got home it got a good cleaning and a fresh batch of ammo. One thing I will say, the ammo I had in it was in there since I bough the gun. So yes it was time to get fresh ammo. I also used it with a snake shot round for a rattler we ate and I noticed it's better to only use 1 round of snakeshot at a time because having 2 can jam the cylinder.

Took my 94 vintage Colt Detective Special to a well thought of gunsmith some time ago & had him check the internals for any necessary lube/TLC. Had fired it before but never had the side plates off. Took it to the range when I got it back. On the first trigger pull/press nothing happened. The hammer didn't come back & the cylinder didn't turn. Put it up & finished the range time with one of the Glocks.....Took it right back to him. I think, and I may be wrong, but the problem with a six round .357 with a small frame revolver has to do with the steel being able to handle the internal pressure. Either the cylinder would have to be much larger or they would have to use a higher grade of steel.

Generally speaking, I have had good luck with Taurus firearms. There has only been one of them that I wasn't happy with but after sending it back to Taurus USA it came back fixed and with the limited testing I had done afterwards the problems (yes plural) were gone. True, S&W firearms are nicer and hopefully of better quality (and that's debatable) they cost two to three times more than a Taurus firearm does. So if I have to lose a weapon to police custody as evidence I would rather it be a Taurus.

If Taurus would drill the grip retention roll pin hole to the proper size for the roll pin used, you probably would not have seen this temporarily malfunction. Driving this roll pin out of the 856 the first time in never fun. I reamed this hole out on my three Taurus revolvers.

    • @LionquestFitness

Not a bad idea. A solid metal roll pin would be an improvement as well. I'm sure it is designed tight to keep the rubber grip in position and the rolled sheet metal roll pin as well to keep manufacturing costs down.

My experience with Taurus revolvers is that the fit and finish (unless we're talking those new "Executive Grade" ones) won't be the greatest, but they work and are affordably priced. In today's market, I'm priced out of S&W revolvers, so Taurus is my only realistic option. But I like the Taurus revolvers I have, they're perfectly functional, so I'm fine with buying from Taurus.

I try to carry my main gun 24/7 and then for the backup (when I feel like it I try to carry a j frame or something else I like, it’s more just bc I have too many favorites and this way I train and carry same gun but also get to give other guns attention so they don’t get too jealous.

Hi Greg, I recently bought a Taurus 856ch stainless steel as a christmas gift for myself. I have not shot it yet. Upon closer inspection after taking delivery of the gun, I noticed the cylinder latch is not flush or touching the side plate. There is a gap (1mm) between the latch and the side of the gun. The screw is tight in relation to the latch, but the latch has a springy movement if depressed to open the cylinder. I went back to the store to look at their other 856s and has the same issue. Since you are an experienced Taurus owner, I would like to get your opinion on this. Thanks in advance and looking forward to see more of your videos.

    • @LionquestFitness
      @LionquestFitness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is how they are made. I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice the screw backing out like I've had with two of my modern S&W revolvers. Blue loctite can take care of that. Another screw to watch on the Taurus revolvers is the yoke assembly screw on the right side.

Another enjoyable video & great shooting, Greg... nice to know I'm not the only guy with a loose screw, LOL...
Lightweight revolvers take a pounding with hot loads, but even the vibration from dry firing with snap caps can cause a screw to back out, so blue Loctite is our friend..just like you, I had to get a side plate screw from eBay for a S&W Mod 642 to replace the one that mysteriously disappeared during dry fire practice 😉...& I've seen lots of loose cylinder release screws.
You remind me of the old adage beware of the man with only one gun...he probably knows how to use it very very well.
Despite the myth, revolvers are actually more complicated than semi autos, so while Taurus semi's are reliable finding a reliable revolver of their's is a matter of sheer luck & I totally agree with your observations on Taurus's VERY spotty Q.C. which is why I finelly swore them off for good & just pay the money for a better made S&W or a Ruger..
FYI, I recently obtained a rare 2 inch Mod 15 pinned barrel from my favorite hunting grounds...a pawnshop...I have only bought one brand new handgun in the last 4-5 years...everything else has been used...
Thanks for the great videos, Brother & keep em coming please...God bless

Well, I've also considered that the grips I was using (traditional square) and the way I was holding the grips (edge of square between pinky and next finger) may have put a different strain (finger lower on the trigger) on the pull that may have crimped that plunger spring. Once I changed the grips I was doing a lot of dryfiring to adjust to that unorthodox hold. Regardless, when I took the cylinder out and examined the plunger and spring everything was as it should be other than some grease and dirt I cleaned.

Fiddly guns are vexing. That’s what so many people fall into love/hate relationships with various companies. While sometimes weak finances force you to get a sub par gun, it’s always best to get as good as you can get and upgrade when you can. Often a good used gun from a good company is better than a new one from a mediocre company. And if you can afford quality, then buy once, cry once.
