I've been feeding my chickens this mix for 12 months... I got eggs through the winter.
I started when the feed scare happened, and I looked at the nutrients, calcium, protein, etc on the feed label... realized a mix like this outperforms store bought feed. And it's in my pantry (and cheaper overall)

What do you do with any left over? Do you just leave it in the chickens run?

Sometimes there's a little left over, they eventually clean it up during the day.

Adding marigolds to their feed will also help give a darker yoke..

thanks for the ideas! I'm in the middle of NH and don't get eggs over the winter months. I need to keep them healthy and warm enough until the end of March without it costing me a fortune in commercial feed! I have 5 ducks and 8 bantam cochins that get 1/2 cup of commercial feed each day plus whatever scraps I can come up with. Even just adding cooked beans would help!! again, thanks

This is an interesting idea and I see you have quite a few chickens. I have backyard chickens and all through their first winter they have still be laying eggs well for me and the color is still pretty yellow/orange. Honestly I give them tons of food scraps from myself, but also from family and neighbors, so they are getting a lot of greens, vegetable peels, etc. I'm sure that supplementing your chickens with this extra food will help with egg production and overall chicken happiness but I am curious to see if you get more yellow yolks like you are hoping for.

    Tray sprouts grains
Take about a week and will supply lots of proteins
Also crush the egg shells and mixed with the food for extra calcium

all we ever fed is chick starter and ground or rolled oats when they were young for first 6 weeks after that whole oats, barley , corn,or wheat ( chickens have gizzards they dont need chopped grain ) oyster shells to laying hens if they are free ranging in summer they dont need oyster shells either

It looks like y’all are on the road now, but I was curious how this worked out. I was thinking this might be a good idea for a back up chicken feed, in a SHTF type scenario. I’m boiling some now for a test, I figured I would give them this on the side with their feed.

My hens love the beans. I still free feed the regular stuff, and once a day, I dump 16 to 20 oz of cooked beans and rice, and they tear it up. Believe it or not, my egg production has picked up, and considering we're in the winter, I'm happy about that.

Bugs are what makes their yolks dark orange. Maybe try some meal worms in the winter. They also need greens. They didn't seem very enthusiastic. Neither white rice, nor macaroni have much nutrition in them. Rice bran is what is removed, and has most of the nutrition in it. But research it first.
