Heya, great video! funnily enough I’m reading through A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man now to prepare for studying Ulysses next semester at uni. I had a chat with the person who behind the counter at the book shop that I bought both Portrait and Ulysses at, she rolled her eyes when I asked her about Wake and said “no one actually reads that book! [all the way through] so don’t feel stupid if you never get around to it!”. Really appreciate the video giving me a digestible slice of some of the novels many literary allusions without the headache of reading it (yet!). I’m very happy with Portrait and Ulysses for now.. I was wondering if you’ve read any other Joyce? I adored Dubliners when I read it some time in the summer last year and Portrait is both moving, readable and also has brilliantly dense parts to it so far. I think his prose style is very approachable in his first two novels so I’m looking forward to how things take a more post-modern turn down the line. You have a funny knack for uploading videos that co-inside with my university studies! thanks once again for the video (: nathan
@@nath9000 I’m so glad you’re digging into Portrait, Nathan! Yes, I’ve read most of Joyce’s works (Dubliners, Portrait, Ulysses, and the Wake). Honestly I really wasn’t attached to Dubliners (I read it after Ulysses and the Wake so maybe I got desensitized), but I really liked Portrait. The beginning and end are really rather wonderful. A brilliant example of a Bildungsroman. Can’t wait for you to read more Joyce! I’ve got Ulysses lectures on the channel as well if you ever need them :)
Excellent stuff.
