  • In this video I am going to go over everything you need to know and consider before buying new wheels, especially in regards to performance. I will go over how the rotational weight of your wheel is important, I will explain what is unsprung weight and how it effects handling and acceleration, we will go over how to size new wheels when it comes to wheel width, what is wheel offset and also what is positive and negative scrub radius and how it effects your performance and lastly what should the diameter of your new wheel and tire combo be when compared to stock and how a low profile tire might effect your driving experience and handling as well.

    The sooner this oversized wheel fad dies off the better. Sidewall gives better mpg, a smoother ride and far more protection from potholes. #SaveSideWall

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Smoother ride and pothole/etc impact protection from taller sidewalls is true, but better fuel economy is not, all else equal (same wheel weight, tire width, diameter, similar tread compound and design for same rolling resistance). That greater flex of the sidewall with every rotation of the wheel, that smooths the ride, also creates a slight extra drag and loss of efficiency. Granted it is not much if you keep your tires properly inflated.

    Larger diameter tires also reduce the mechanical advantage of the brakes since the pads are farther from the tire tread potentially increasing stopping distances. Wider tires decrease the aerodynamics of the vehicle reducing speed and fuel economy.

    Finally. A good explanation of Scrub Radius. I have a 04 TSX that has 17x7 +45 (215/50-17) . I used to have a RX7 and still have the wheels. 16x8 +50 and weigh less than 14lbs , center bore is bigger but I have eBay adapters. I have 245/50-16 on them with no rubbing. The Acura center caps fit the RX7 wheels. Looks like a cop car.

  • @rangersmith4652
    @rangersmith4652 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Offset is the factor most people fail to consider, and it makes all the difference in safety and handling. How many people looking to "upgrade" their wheels (often called "rims") even know what their factory offset is? The best bet is to simply stick to wheel/tire combinations that the manufacturer offered on the model. For example, if your car has 17" wheels and 65-series tires, but there was an 18" 60-series option from the factory, changing to the latter will work fine unless the suspension also has differences between the two wheel and tire options, which is unlikely.

  • @richardautenzio8117

    Great advise and the best advice you are going to get. Do not listen to your local armchair racing car drivers. This guy knows what he is talking about. I'm into very luxurious cars with a very comfortable ride. However the modern so called expensive but often cheap luxury cars have air suspension fitted, just to compensate for just some of the problems related to their very low and hard profile tyres. And you are paying for all these modern fashionable overengeering trends in our modern cars. Just stick to what the manufacturer makes for your car and buy practical cars. And for those so called lead foot drivers who don't want to, then they are fortunately protection by speed limits on our roads which restricts even the standard cheap car from using most of it low performance and power.

    • @vendetta989
      @vendetta989 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so, many reasons for bigger wheels, including but not limited to lower profile tires that will have less flex in tire side wall creating better handling, wider tires increase contact surface with road causing increased traction just to name a few... not to mention better looks

    Been trying to figure out why my 04 Pontiac vibe is so loud and bumpy. I feel like I feel and hear every little bump in the road even those seems that you sometimes have every 20 feet or so. I put factory 17” alloy rims and tires (215 50 17) on it. I don’t have much to compare it to since the 16” tires (205 55 16) were pretty shot so I replaced them right away and found the factory 17’s for a great deal. My 04 matrix with a 100K more miles (255k) rides smoother in 16’s

    so what about wheel adapters? now im not talking about ebay parts, im talking proper adapters bought from a proper place like URO or ECS. the reason I ask is because say i have a set of the same size rims as my stock setup but they are 5x114.3 not 5x112 like the car calls for. all of this supposes the offsets are correct, the wideness is within a half inch of stock (stock is 7.5 the rims im refering to are 7) and that its all been installed by a professional (that includes a balance and alignment for the new wheel) are they safe and to be specific , are they safe to do regular everyday driving on i highly doubt anyone would ever be dumb enough to try and "track" a set of adapters.
    EDIT: my car came with 17's on it just incase anyone sees that 7.5 and it doesnt look right. (17x7.5)

    My wheels on my car are 21 years old they are arrested so I can just go up one wheel size from a 14 to a 15 and keep the same diameter because they are shot
