    Those guys who do the spraying whatever they get paid it's not enough, the nitro finish is the business, watching the burst appearing as if by magic just gives me a deeper appreciation for my two (LP & 335) I tip my hat to the lads in Gibson 👍🇮🇪

    The "yellow transparent shader" is the color of my LP! They made a boo-boo and mine was supposed to be a Heritage Cherry Sunburst (that's on the shipping label and scratched out by the factory under the neck cavity). Either my guitar was missed at this step accidentally or on purpose, but it is the only 50's Standard in base coat yellow!

    Good grief, do you not wear respirators in the USA? Spraying nitro cellulose with just a basic face mask! I hope those sprayers get good health insurance, they're going to need it.

    • @DMDvideo10
      @DMDvideo10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm surprised too... I've prayed nitro here and at a pro booth and a respirator is a must... Even then the occasional lung infection is inevitable...

    • @makinbiscuits
      @makinbiscuits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And those facemasks are probably just for covid. My guess would be that their exhaust and ventilation meets OSHA standards so that they aren't required to wear a respirator. You can tell they had lots of fans running in that place as it was quite loud.

      I agree. Long term those painters are going to die a painful cancerous death. My friend painted cars and when he dies he was a shell of skin and bones. Not to mention, they are not wearing gloves either. I used to paint with oil based and you need solvents to clean it off. Either way they will end up sick.

    • @northmanlogging2769
      @northmanlogging2769 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      they had a pretty good exhaust system in place, so chances are the painter doesn't even smell it, that said, Health ins? in the US? Never heard of him.

    • @jimwoodard64

      There is a huge amount of negative pressure that you can see in that back wall. That's why the other guitars don't get overspray hanging next to the one being worked on. This question has been asked on other walk thrus by other channels.

    It´s funny to see these workers don´t use an uniform. They use their own clothe. Factories in china or suramerica use uniform for their workers and few of them use appropiate equipment to work. I hope they don´t get sick because of the chemicals.

      lol. Quite the achievement? I never knew it was an achievement for an Electrical company called Gibson who made crap refrigerators and electronics since the 50's. Made an achievement in painting electrical guitars like English furniture. When it adds zero quality to the sound. And is a real pain to play in humid weather. Not to mention. They are painted like a grandmas English furniture. So the paint is easily sustainable to chipping and all that junk.

      @@eaglewarrior8707 Gibson guitars is not the company that made refrigerators. Gibson Appliance was founded by Joshua Hall in Belding, Michigan, in 1877 as the Belding-Hall Company selling cabinets that housed blocks of ice (ice-boxes). It was purchased by Frank Gibson, a competing manufacturer of "ice refrigerators" in the early 1900s. It was the largest in its industry at the time. In 1931, the company began making electric refrigerators.
      The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co. Ltd.was started by five Kalamazoo businessmen in 1902.

    • @DavidRavenMoon
      @DavidRavenMoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a spray booth. The overspray is being sucked out via large fans behind that filter on the wall.
      However having sprayed lacquer many times, he should be wearing a respirator.

    • @rob_in_stowmarket_uk

      I believe the rear of the booth is also a ‘water wall’, flushing the majority of the overspray away with a constantly moving ‘curtain’.of water.

    Two things bothered me in this: wood filler in the imperfections and pores? That is not something I would have thought was done in a high end guitar. The other thing was the contradiction when he said they only spray a very minimal, thin coat on, but then when he got to the clear coat area he said they put on a minimum of 5 coats. Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to just do a thin finish in my opinion.

    • @johnfoskey7855

      5 coats doesn't mean they are heavy coats..have you ever painted cars?

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Foskey Yeah. I was an auto-body repairman in the 90s. Different beast though. You want more coats on a car. On a guitar I like to be able to still see and feel the pores and grain of the wood like on a good piece of wood furniture. Not into the thick gloss look.

      A mil is not the same thickness as a millimeter. The term "mil" is not an abbreviation but instead its own unit of measure.
      1 mil equals 0.0254 mm
      10 mil equals 0.254 mm.
      10 mils is about 1/64th of an inch.

    Nitrocellulose is an absolutely HORRIBLE outdated finish that yellows badly in a relatively short amount of time (think: yellowed bindings, yellowed headstock logo), is very soft, and is prone to cracking after it _finally_ cures completely. Polyester is a much better MODERN finish that is very hard, remains clear over time, and can be instantly cured using UV. I suspect the _real_ reason Gibson hesitates to get on board with the modern age of finishing has more to do with the cost of changing over than anything else. That lame "resonates" excuse offered up by them and others is just that - a lame excuse.
    For the one-off individual luthier, polyester is not a viable option - it's too difficult to work with in a non-industrial setting (i.e., without the equipment to properly apply and cure it, such as Taylor does). For them, two-part urethanes (automotive clear coats) are the way to go to top coat under other finishes (stains, etc.), or as a solo finish.
    Those two-part urethanes do a perfectly fine job of allowing resonance when THINLY applied (especially with acoustics) - as is the case with any finish. But STAY AWAY from nitro - that's old, defunct technology.

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You must live in a bubble if you don’t know that there is a whole huge demographic of guitarists who *want* the finish on their guitars to fade, yellow, crack, and generally show wear and age over time. Your own tastes are yours but they don’t represent those of every one else.

    What a lie. I imported a standard and right out of the box chunks of Nitrocellulose came off. Not checking as you expect with age but small coin sized chunks and chips. The seller didn't respond because he is in US and I'm in NZ so why would he do anything as he has my cash. Emailed Gibson when it started to happen a second time to see if they would stand behind their product. Answer was NO. Issue between seller and buyer. People should know this before purchasing that Gibson only stands behind their product under limited circumstances. Not sure it effects the sound (maybe over time?) but my $4k asset doesn't have the resell value it should have.
