  • My demonstration of how to tag up and lead squads via GW2's group finder, the looking for group tab. This was a pretty basic introduction, but I just wanted to showcase how simple it actually is to do this in GW2.
Some corrections for the video: The private squad checkbox actually just hides your squad on the map. The join permissions drop down box right below the checkboxes is how you control who can and can't enter your group, but that system doesn't always work. My brain farted when I talked about that. Additionally, while I started to contemplate changing the wording of the listing, I ended up not doing so because we did start to get players without me having to. But sometimes, just using full words and being more specific can help make your listing more enticing to players perusing the lfg.
I also didn't do a great job at bridging the terminology for newer players, but if you are going to be leading squads, most of the terms I was using should be common knowledge to you anyway. If they're not, it would be a good idea to brush up on the ins and out of subgroup layouts and how boons work in GW2 before trying to lead experienced groups through the lfg. This was simply a demo for how to go about actually leading a group once you are ready to do so.
The reason we were having trouble with the actual fight is because Cerus was getting too many empowered stacks from us failing the orb, tether, and green mechanics, which nearly doubled his dmg. It wasn't a big deal because we did end up getting the kill anyway, but it is important that if we did wipe, I would be able to identify what was going wrong, which I would have been able to do if I needed to for us to progress (even though I said I wasn't paying much attention, I had an eye on what was going wrong and was ready to give notes should we have wiped). No one was leeching this encounter or trolling, some people just didn't have all the mechanics fully mastered, which honestly made the fight more fun for me. Clean kills on these normal mode strike encounters feel too much like a glorified golem pull, so I truly do enjoy a messy run and enthusiastically embrace the chaos. The mixing of experience and mechanical skill levels in the lfg is part of the fun, imo.
And to be clear, I personally would not have kicked any of these players if we would have failed. I would have just briefly went over some of the mechanics we were failing with the group without calling anyone out individually, then sent the group for another pull and it would have been absolutely free the second time around.

One possible pitfall with putting yourself in sub 2 if you're making squads that are not too restrictive on experience is that a certain percentage of people doesn't know about /d and talk with /p, someone has to tell them for the first time, for this reason I stay in 1 when I make squads.

So the holy trinity of tank, dps, and healer is now just the couple dps, healer?

GW2 has a fluid group composition system, where things like healing, dps, tanking, and special roles can come from anywhere in the group. The meta is one healer support, one dps support, and 3 dps, but you can break down those roles and share the burden of the actual elements of healing, dmg, tanking, mechanics, etc. amongst the group as a whole in any combination you can think of. Not all methods will be as potent or successful, but there are actually plenty of viable alternative setups for your group. That's a bit too advanced conceptually for the scope of this video, though. I just wanted to demo the more regular side of group construction through the lfg. This is just the simplest and most common way to set up your group for maximum success in finding a group quickly through in-game channels.
