      Early season are to good to forget if you ask me. Can't let a bad ending ruin a great show or some of the best seasons of television would be ignored simply because whatever follows them is crap. I try to view seasons like I would individual movies in a series. If the sequels are shit you still have the original and if they are great then all the better.

      I was thinking "I haven't most of that movie. But do I want to see it? No." to half of the movies on this List.
      These are not movies made for "adults", they're movies made for a very specific audience... some made just for film critic credentials or award baiting.
      Most of them I wouldn't pay to watch in a cinema though... it's just too expensive for that.

    "Instead of yelling about how you want R rated superhero moves because 'you're an adult' just go see actual movies made for adults."
    While I don't think this is wrong, I think it highlights a broader issue in western movies in that not enough adult-targeted movies explore fantastical and sci-fi worlds. I love a good mystery, or crime drama, or action movie as much as anyone, hell Gone Girl is probably my favorite film of the decade.
    But there genuinely aren't enough movies that use less realistic topics to address complex adult themes like Arrival, Annihilation, Ex Machina, or The Martian.

    • @claudegarmon2958
      @claudegarmon2958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well. yes. in my mind, i paraphrase "watch more actual movies made for adults" into "watch more good anime that is made for adults; seventies sci fi may have died and been composted to grow space cowboys but it was reborn like the phoenix in anime like so much stuff, depending on the genre. way too much to see it all. nobody would want to; but good adult stuff of any given genre. it's being made up to some standard or the other. obviously kid stuff and obviously plenty of bad stuff, too

    6:16 Patrick I am absolutely with you on your argument, and continue to be disheartened and frustrated with the toxic fan culture that only seems to get worse as Time goes on.
    Also, it is not that I want to defend the toxic fans or the trolls, but just simply in the case of "going to more movies" that can be pretty difficult. Movie ticket prices are out of control. Going to the movies was something that could be done almost weekly, but now people, especially families of two or more, have to be selective in how they spend their movie budget. When you now have to invest $45 dollars just to get a family of 4 through the door, I can definitely understand being angry about what you are getting being hot garbage.

    • @rekindle7602
      @rekindle7602 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is what I wanted to say, only more articulate. When I was in college and could watch a movie on campus for $5 I watched a ton of stuff. Now that I have to spend $15 *and* drive 20 minutes to get to the theater, most of the time I just prefer to wait until it's on a streaming service. So I don't watch most new movies until more than a year after they are released, and the conversation has already moved on.

    • @filmwiebe1703
      @filmwiebe1703 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Theater prices are definitely higher than they have been before. But its interesting to me that movie theater chains don't make money on the tickets. I used to work at Landmark Cinema's, a Canadian company, where ticket prices was about $14 a ticket, but most of the income came from concessions. Our Managers gave out a lot of passes to people when issues occurred on the technical side.
      It wasn't something they considered valuable, because the profits from the tickets go to the studios more than anything.
      Heck, Disney raised the price for The Rise of Skywalker to $15 at the theater, and we couldn't do anything about it.
      The theater going experience is defined more than ever now by what will get people to come into the theater. Some theaters will run Marvel Movies for 9 weeks instead of picking up smaller films because it will still pull more people to the theater, and those people might buy concessions, and thus make the theater money. Its saddening.
      I think the big thing that we, as consumers, have to do more than ever, is look up (non spoiler) reviews online from people with similar tastes. We have to search out what might be good, and use our dollar to not just support the blockbusters that can disappoint, but seek out the smaller films that may be worth watching. Its not the easiest thing, but it can make a difference. It may mean the conversation circles you can be apart of are a lot smaller, but I think that's better than sitting through a disappointing film and wasting $45.
      I also think that while it can be difficult for families to go out, most of the "toxic" fans generally aren't in families. Most families I know are just happy to spend time with the family, and if the films bad, would rather ignore it than complain online. Even in the theater, the parents most times didn't care as much about the film as the kids.
      A lot of bad criticism comes from the younger generation (and I am apart of that generation.). We care about the films we watch more, but we also need to stop relying on benchmark names to pull us into the theater. Tons of my friends would rather watch Joker or Spiderman than Knives Out, because the franchise is well known. Whats popular tends to be what people watch, even if there are other options.
      It may not be easier to watch more movies, but I think its fairly easy to check what those who have seen the film have thought, and then decide if its worth the time.
      Browsing youtube and google is super easy, and can save lots of money.
      But that's just my 2 cents.

    • @joeman1224
      @joeman1224 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@filmwiebe1703 Well said. Ultimately, it is up to the consumer to be smarter and vote with their dollar. It just used to be easier for an accidental success because it was not as big of a financial risk to head to the theater.
      Also, I think it is wildly unfair for studios to have the much power over theaters, but I also get that they are trying to make money too and a movie is not a cheap thing to make

    • @filmwiebe1703
      @filmwiebe1703 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joeman1224 So true. Its a shame though that a certain studio is raking in cash and yet the CGI companies they work with go under.

      this to a T. i wanted to see the lighthouse, knives out, cats, and little women this year (to name a few) but couldnt because ticket prices are unmanageable and my partner works on the only matinee day our theatre has (not to mention our only movie theatre in town straight up suspended all matinee prices when star wars came out). it was $55 for our family of four to see star wars, and its literally all the movie money we could spare for the month. same with endgame.

    Welcome back, Patrick (H) Willems! And I'd like give a special welcome to Charl, who's undoubtedly going to be the most exciting character find of 2020! There's just something about him.
    It's funny, when you listed all your favorite things from 2019 I got the feeling that our Venn Diagrams are substantially different, but also substantially intersect. We seem to like about 60% of the same things, but that remaining 40% is _very_ different. That's a good thing. In this factionalized world it's important to listen to people with whom we don't share every single opinion in advance. You can (and often do) surprise me, and that's cool.

    • @Kevin_Street
      @Kevin_Street 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and to add one more thing, I think a big story of 2019 (and every year of this century before it) is how the studios just don't understand how to make blockbuster movies. The blockbusters of the 80's and 90's all came from people with singular creative visions. In today's world the tentpole movies are either safe and homogenized (like a lot of Marvel) or the studios do give creative control to individuals, but they pick the _wrong_ people (GoT), or there's a combination of both failure modes. (Star Wars.)
      The real way to make blockbuster movies is to _not_ try to make blockbuster movies. Encourage a bunch of people with strong creativity to make smaller movies with smaller budgets, watch to see which of those people are the most successful, then snap them up to make something bigger. In other words you've got to evolve them from the bottom up, instead of designing them from the top down. But that means evolving new trilogies and franchises instead of continually extending the old ones.

    On the topic of Binge Watching, according to some data-tracking it seems like series like The Witcher that was released in bulk was still widely popular and talked about a month after release, on the same page as The Mandalorian. There was a popularity "war' between the two a week ago. I don't think the binge watching experience is going to go away anytime soon as it is working perfectly fine for NETFLIX it seems. I do not mind the weekly release of The Mandalorian but I think it didn't help Game of Thrones season 8 to have everybody pick apart every episode for 7 days before the new one came out. People would have probably been much kinder to the last season if it was released in bulk.

      @@patrickhwillems I agree but you would be surprised how many pieces written on it don't even bring it up. not even a passing mention. Yeah, there's so much shit to watch, listen to, read and just generally do that it's hard to keep track of things, which is, funnily enough, something discussed with my literary theory professor when we got to talking about Swans and music in general. What you said is exactly what I experienced when talking to most people about music, everyone has their own niche and is an expert of it, and that's great, but also sucks when you and the person you're talking to share more things you don't listen to/read/watch than the things you do. The best solution that I found for this problem was to prioritize stuff and make sure that whatever it is that I want to get to, it would be worth my time and I'd like it or would at least get something useful out of it, and it made the whole ordeal much simpler and opened some space so I'm contend with it. I'm stoked for more of your content, and hope you'll hear my prayer and make a video on why Urban's Dredd is great. Hell, I should make it instead, but that's a topic for another time. Much luck to you and your team and I hope you're gonna have bitchin' 2020!
