I have encountered pickpockets in almost every European country I’ve visited. Barcelona was the worst because it’s apparently the pickpocket capital of the world (according to TripAdvisor). Not going back any time soon because it’s too stressful having to watch your belongings like an eagle all the time. 😂

Take it one step further by putting your some money there for your small purchases. Sometimes they actually follow you and watch when you pay so they know where the cash is. Your bigger amount of cash you just stuff into you jeans pocket where it is near impossible to pick.

Don’t be complacent when taking crowded public transport in big cities. Lesson learnt is that 1)Never put your important items in your rear pockets. 2)Always put your items(mobile phone & wallet)in the front pockets with your both hands in the pockets. 3)Traveler bag should be on your shoulders and avoid using roller bag. 4)Wear jacket with front inner zipper pockets.

Hi Mr Loo.. glad that you managed to recover your wallet with no monetary loss. Like you, I too had an episode on the train. I was being pickpocket by a gypsy woman. She bumped into my while I boarded the train. She was carrying her bag pack in front. Like you when I realise I lost my money pouch, I walked over to her and shook her bag pack. And my money pouch dropped off as she parked it bt her chest and the bag pack.. so I managed to get back 100pct of my funds. I too shouted *you thief* and she further remained on tye train for two.stations...then was kicked out of the train by some French people (knowing that are a risk or maybe nuisance to the public). Many asked me... *why are you so brave? What happens.if she has a knife on her?* oh well.. I just dint think too hard about it. I.was lucky. Managed to get back my funds and come to no.harm 😅

That is Paris Mr. Loo. It also happened to me many years ago. When I reported it to the police, the response I got was "Welcome to Paris". I was in a police car going to the Police outpost. During the drive, the office introduced me to the famous landscape of Paris. :) Italy is even worse. Too many Africans. Don't put all your money in one wallet, separate it like keeping it under the sole. Credit cards also separate it into different areas. If you are not driving in Europe, keep it in Singapore. I don't carry my IC when traveling I made a photocopy of my IC and Passport. I only carry my passport. The best, don't carry too much cash. Use a credit card for all payments if possible.

Glad that you got your wallet. Just imagine the nightmare if your wallet and passport are gone. Although people said Paris is so romantic, I disagree because of the risk of pickpocket and other petty crimes. I have travelled a few times there and I totally agree with your comments and advices. Always wear money belt, keep your wallet and handphone in your front pcoket of your trouser and put your hands inside your pocket if possible (never put behind). Carry backpack in front and use anti-theft backpack. I have encountered a few attempts (but luckily they were no successful) of various methods which sometimes made me paranoid and not able to fully enjoyed my holidays. And yes, thanks for sharing. We must keep reminding ourselves and take precautions on travelling.

Europe has always been like this, never changed in the last 10-15 years. Probably got worse in recent years due to bad economy. I was also almost pickpocked in Paris by a group of gypsies several years back. Like you, we caught them red-handed and forced them to return the phone. Similarly, there were other Parisians sitting at next tables who witnessed the whole incident and just laughed. Malaysia, Europe, US are all dangerous in their own ways. That being said, I'm glad you weren't hurt in the incident.. keep safe!

However I was blessed as a French gentleman saw what happened. He guided me to take my photo and go Singapore embassy to get the authorisation letter to return to Singapore. Yes, please heed Mr Loo ‘s advice not to bring your passport out unnecessarily. Just a moment of neglect can be a very painful experience. Thank God Singapore Embassy was near , otherwise I don’t know how much trouble I have to go through to return to Singapore!

Sorry to hear about your experience, but the "welcome to Paris!" is very true. It's an honest poke at your carelessness, sad but true. Just glad that you recovered your wallet and wasn't hurt. These are petty crimes that no one will bother to help, because there are simply too many such crooks around. Europe can go, but must be prepared and stay alert all times, and also have backup credit cards/cash somewhere else and not all in single wallet. On the bright side, it's a life experience to remember by and it makes you tougher and more alert! I remembered walking at night in London to buy a late dinner, the street was not crowded, but I heard people shouting racist words at me from a far. It felt very unsafe. Don't ever walk alone at night. Just go back to hotel/home. Plan your purchases so you don't have to come out at night to buy things/food.

They usually work in gangs, I got pick pocketed in the metro where one guy asked me something to confirm I’m not local and his teammates were waiting at the entrance of the train preventing me from entering. Someone inside picked and passed the wallet to the one waiting outside while the train doors were closing. When I shouted, the team did the same to drown my voice. I pried open the doors and chased but the guy was fast to pull out the cash, dropped the wallet and run outside. He didn’t take all but most of the cash. They were all late teens/early 20s. Lesson learnt.

Yes pickpockets are very rampant in a lot of the European cities. Once my sister was pickpocketed in Athens and when she went to the police station to make police report, it was swamping with tourists in the same situation. Another time I myself was pickpocketed in Zurich train station and I lost a purse and my cosmetics pouch which was very sentimental to me as it was given to me by one of my staff with my name embroidered and I had it for 12 years. It was such a sickening feeling that it spoiled my holiday. We are so blessed to be living in Singapore

Not one person stood forward, it simply means that it is so normal. Yet, these westerners have the cheek to lecture Asian countries on human rights & democracy. Everything is on the surface only. Europeans living in past glory. I witnessed in front of my eye in Milan airport that another family just next to my table got their stuff stolen and I don't even noticed it. I only noticed it when the man came to me and asked me did I saw anyone near his table? I was glue to Chinese drama on my laptop all the while, so I didn't noticed it. Strangely, CCTV is everywhere but none at the restaurant. Police came walking around the restaurant but nothing was done. Milan airport, anyone can come in. They don't have departure area. Anyone can come in. The seats were design to be uncomfortable for sleeping and no water to drink unless you buy from Machine. All these design, is to deter homeless from sleeping in the airport. Oh you might thought that wow, Milan, the fashion capital of the branded. Guess what? the first thing that greet me after I came out from the high speed train station was a public phone that had mud stick to it. Bus stop were small and graffiti were everywhere. The worst airport in the world. Our impression of high class European came from the movies that we watch. Once you step into that continent, you will realised that we all got cheated. I been to Paris, Rome, Prague, Milan, Florence, Hungary. Singapore is still the best. Don't believe those western movies you watch. They don't show the real situation of their country in the Movies. You have to be there to see it yourself.

Use a money pouch which loops around the belt and tucks into the front of the inside of my pants, that's how I carry my main cash and credit cards, I leave at most $50 in my cheap coin pouch in the pants front or side pocket not back with a chain again looped to my belt, my passport is tucked into the leg pocket of my cargo pants.

But when the same thing happened in Berlin for my friend, some people came forward to catch the thief. 😂

coincidentally, i also got pickpocketed in paris too. That was about a decade ago, where i was still working for a french company as a consultant so had plenty of opportunities to be sent to the company's Paris HQ for business trip to talk to the CTO and CEO on IT stuff. Similiar, i was picked on the subway station and unfortunately for me, the pickpocket got his/her way because i only knew that my wallet was gone way after the culprit was gone. Had to go to a police station to make a report so that i can file insurance claim for it and the hassle of calling every banks and credit card companies to cancel my card. Really left a bad taste in my mouth and that was just the first day in paris! Subsequent visit to paris and europe, i've learnt the hard way and tried as hard as possible to 'dress down' and looks like a 'hobo' but not shaving at all and barely combed so that i will not be a target.

I was on a group to Rome, Italy many years ago when my mobile phone was picked by an African guy near the Spanish steps. My Bristish tour guide who was observing, came over, told the pickpocket some thing and he left immediately
After the episode, I was still unaware that my mobile phone was picked. I asked my tour guide what he said to that pickpocket ? He said "I told him to put that mobile phone back where it belong". O, that pickpocket stole my mobile phone and later on put it back without me knowing That's how skillful the pickpockets are in Europe.

European cities have all along had many pickpockets. I experienced that since 20 years ago and it has not improved. My friend was standing near the train door and got her bagpack snatched by a person who dashed out of the train straight away before the door closed. No chance to catch him..

Know what you are feeling. I had my pocket picked in France, on train from disneyland to central paris. In a rush to go up to the train I instinctly put my wallet at the back of my pants (big mistake). The train was packed and reach hotel then realize wallet gone. I needed to go police to fine a report so that I can process insurance later when go back home. When I go to the police, the police even ask me if I am sure I want to file a report and it will "take a long time to do". That's their how the culture it lol. Many places in the world, not just france is like this ... we are just too pampered in Singapore

😮Do you purchase with card or put your train tickets in wallet after the gatea? Someone maybe observing you when you purchase your ticket and know where is your wallet.
A trick my boss taught me is to have some loose change .... ticket you may use in public in a separate pockets so its more difficult for pickpockets.
And get rid of the ostrich wallet as it attract too much😅 attention. 😂😅

Mr Loo, I am a woman, and i had ever pickpocketed on a bus in Jakarta. I was shouted to the thieves (several of them working together to take open my bag and taking my laptop out of my bag) and no body care as well, everyone just look out of the window. Every one was afraid of being stabbed by them

A friend encountered a similar situation in a London 5 stars hotel. She noticed her handbag missing and saw a guy walking past with a coat over his arm. Instinctively, she ran after him and pull down his jacket. Sure enough, her handbag was beneath the jacket. NO one in the hotel lobby came forward to help despite the commotion. The thief just walk out of the lobby calmly.

Many years ago we were in Brisbane n my husband was pickpocketed while queuing up at MacDonald. My daughter n I were just standing next to my husband. When it was our turn to order my husband reached for his wallet n realised his wallet was gone. Both the manager at the outlet n police couldn’t care less. Maybe we’re Asian I dun know. At that time there was no hp yet. Upon reaching the apartment we were staying we immediately called the Sg bank n cancelled the credit cards. My husband lost A$500 n ID. Also dun think pickpockets doesn’t happened in Sg. This time I was the one pickpocketed at the Yaohan supermarket. Yes pickpockets worked in teams. This 2 women were talking but quite closed to me. The next thing I realised my bag was opened n the wallet gone. Lesson learnt is always be vigilant regardless of where you are 😊

In sgp, HDB cluttering of corridor goes on in many areas with highly paid Town Council and SCDF officers sweeping issues under the carpet instead of clearing any potential flammable debris. That’s daylight robbery too.

Hello Mr Loo, glad u managed to get your wallet back, other victims might not have been so. Thanks for your sharing but here are some observations.
    1) Pickpockets congregate in major European cities. Stay away from the major cities, go outside the city and u will be fine.
    2) On people not helping, the French probably dislike the Police more the these small time crooks, also pickpockets usually carry small knives for their own safety, so when threatened, they might stab you with their weapon. Also, people see it as a normal, everyday thing. So they don’t want to get involved.
    3) be aware of the public transportation in Paris as well as tourists spots like the Lourve, where pickpockets gather.
    4) wallets and phone in front pockets, zipped up if possible. Hold your bags to your chest when entering and leaving via doors, and avoid packed buses. Also the turnstile areas too. Alternatively, take an Uber.
    5) Last but not least, saying Europe is a very dangerous isn’t quite fair or true. It depends on many factors, it’s mostly safe to travel but just need to use some common sense.
