The sound was off the charts awesome!

This why loads are moving to fractals, kempers, and load boxes so the sound is worked on in the room then stored and taken on tour and its stable each night.

Yo, I’ve been a Guitarist since 1983 & when I started playing Guitar I had MANY PEDALS, but around my 15th year of playing I reduced my pedal usage to…..Delay, Reverb, Wah-Wah & Distortion, & periodically if I’m playing some Funk or R&B I’ll add a Chorus, Phase or Tremelo sound!
I've been at it a long time myself (1977) - and yes , pedals were huge in the 1980s ... but the more you learn , the less you need them.... I have not used a pedal in 10 years now !
Literally every recording you've ever heard of him was routed through a transistor based device that modified the signal from his instrument in order to encode it into radio waves (with some added compression and filtering to minimise the impact of electromagnetic interference from broadcasting and electronic devices emitting radiation) , then it was rectified by another transistor based amp with an antenna attached to it that took those radio waves and translated them back into an electrical current before finally being plugged into the amplifier.
you are correct he does not use any pedals.. but he does use a very special wireless unit called the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System that has a great sounding pre-amp in it.. this goes way back to a couple years before the Back In Black album.

A guitarist can affect the tone quite a bit with subtle things such as finger pressure, string attack, palm muting, etc. Playing with dynamics and style is all about the hands.
Nah, tone means tone. It’s a word that is used to mean the quality and characteristic of a sound. A person’s technique/fingers absolutely changes the quality and characteristic of the sound.
As a guitarist who grew up obsessed with pedals and FX it took me embarrassingly long time to learn you could vary your clean/overdriven tones just by playing softer/harder or turning down your volume pot.
You evidently are oblivious to the fact that very few guitarists used pedals before the '80s. Most of them plugged straight in to their amps and used their guitar volume and tone knobs to shape their sound. Go and look at Peter Green's rig, or Paul Kossoff, or Cream-era Clapton (at most he had a wah and nothing else). It's hilarious when modern pedal players think that pedals were always a staple of guitar tone.
@@Dagger_323 I’m not oblivious to that fact at all you fool. I was simply stating that all of AC/DCs songs sound exactly alike. Which anyone with ears can tell
This info is insane. I never knew this. Dude knows how to hit it.A Gibson SG is perfect for what he does and I love SGs. First show I ever saw as a 16 year old in Charleston, West Virginia. They came through several times and I got to see them many times all over the US. Blew me away. One of them has sadly already left us. Angus is my absolute favorite guitar player and I named my beloved dog after him. If I had a son I would’ve named him the same.Thank you so much for picking up a guitar, Angus. When my little brother was about TEN yrs old he said to me, “You have to hear this band I just heard.” What a band. And thanks to Australia for their gift to the world! ♥️🇺🇸
That makes sense. I stopped using pedals for over 20 years. they cause so much trouble when gigging. I started using them again when I began to play for a Church Band and I was seated in one spot , not having to move around so much.
Leaving out a HUGE part of his sound - The Schaffer wireless tower. Solo Dallas has made a wonderful replica of this, both in a convenient pedal (that you will never turn off) and the tower, itself.
Angus doesnt just play through one Marshall amps. He plays through 7 or 8 Marshall. His guitar tech said he keeps his volume knob around 7 or 8 and then turns it to 10 when he needs that little extreme kick in the ass. Priemer Guitar did a rig rundown on Angus and Stevie Young gear a few years back. Everyone should watch it. Its pretty amazing how simple his rig is.
it's a thing of beauty but not cheap. The special transformer, the custom splitter and a few dozen Marshall heads with their own repair tech backstage.
Don't forget the use of his Shaffer Vega wireless.... It's not a pedal, but it's what delivers the unique sound of Powerage, Highway to hell, and back in black 🤘
The only “effect” that Young has ever implemented into his signal chain was the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System - a wireless unit that he would begin using in 1977 live and in the studio. It works like a clean boost
he used a wireless system that allowed to boost the volume and slightly changed his tone. he used that to help get his tone. i forget the name of the company but they worked with him and created a pedal that recreates what his wireless system did for his tone. i don’t know if he ever used the pedal but he still uses the wireless system to this day.
My understanding is that he had parallel inputs (my first fender amp actually had this). Your signal runs into a clean channel AND distortion channel simultaneously and you just mix the volume of each, (obviously clean channel low, gain channel high). You can CLEARLY hear the parallel input channels on, say, the Whole Lotta Rosie breakdown.
Marshall amps when you turn the pre amp volume all the way up and then turn up the Master Volume 3/4 to 7/8 they produce a distorted "growl'" and sustain. The little mini stacks. Even do it with the little wattage they put. Out, it's why folks love them. Pedals are useful in you can use them to get the distorted tone and sustain or even feedback at lower volume levels. Ac/dc adapters cure the battery problem. Also you can think of pedals as different size brushes to paint on your musical canvas. AC/DC''s playing arenas, you can Get that same grinding growl and forever sustain with a pedal and keep you ability to hear and not piss off the neighbors..Also you can find tones just not there without stomp box . I love my Heavy metal 2, I also got a Widowmaker by outlaw has some cool tones,I call it the chainsaw, and in the past I had a electro harmonics little big muff. Allworked great and lasted forever with ac adapters. Rock on!
Angus used the Schaffer Vega Diversity wireless system to achieve more gain and sustain. I should have mentioned that in this video because every 3rd freaking person has reminded me. But it still isn’t a pedal and the point was he had a very simple sound based on the Marshall tube head sound. And his comment about batteries and pedals…maybe he tried a distortion pedal mounted to his guitar so he could run around. I’ve never seen so many comments with people getting so overheated about that! 😡 not meaning you, just in general. I think l you got the overall point of the video. I can only explain so much in 60 seconds.
He always uses a dalles replica pedal/tower. It’s kind of like a pre amp that they used for their wireless receivers in their back in black tour. Angus liked the tone so much that he wanted something like that when using a cables as well. There is a company who now creates these pedals and towers, solo dallas.
Output tube distortion, Angus knows the trick to get the best tone. Attenuators are great to get that tone at lower volume. EVH used a variac to reduce his amp voltage.
Not exactly an effects pedal, but the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System used by him before his amp does work as a compander and boost. SoloDallas also made the replicas of the same for him because Schaffer ceased production of the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System in 1982. He also uses the Rocktron Hush noise reduction pedal, but it's not an effect pedal. Noise gates and noise reduction pedals are more like utility pedals.
It's a little more than that, but basically your right. His secret sauce is an old wireless unit with a noise filter. I think he uses a modern wireless into it. I think this gives him a unique dry signal that he feeds into the Marshall. At least, I'm pretty sure it's something like that,...super simple, but amazing!
He uses a Schaeffer Vega wireless which has a compressor/booster built in. Not what it was intended for, but it's a nice side effect of the system which he puts to good use on stage and in the studio.
this is the best way to play guitar in my unpopular opinion. It was the way every guitar played played before pedals and distortion pedals are made to try to replicate these sounds in the early day of pedals.
The riffs and songs were simple from a technical standpoint, you won’t hear arpeggios and two handed tapping, but that’s the genius of it. Albums with some of the most iconic riffs in rock, that never seem to get old. If an alien wanted to know what rock and roll was you’d play them AC/DC.
Well he does use something to flavor his sound, the schaffer wireless system. It actually boosts the signal and Angus discovered this after he switched to a different brand and his tone was missing that extra push
That's true.i Have a Epiphone and also don't use pedals.Humbuckers are very sensible and give a distorted sound.Even a Boss Katana amp gives the distorsion straight from the amp.
This setup is called plug and play. Like a classical guitar. The rig is sometimes important but many people waste their time setting up their tone collecting stuff, etc instead getting better performing their instrument.

He's greatness all packaged up.
Angus proves that tubes make better dynamics than any analog or digital circuits.
@casanovafunkenstein5090
Yeah, those analog recording machines captured those tube dynamics and tone.
Go try a fractal unit on the road vs a marshall head.... you'll keep taking the fractal and leave the marshall at home.
Womp womp you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart in a blind test.
A tube circuit is an analogue circuit
you are correct he does not use any pedals.. but he does use a very special wireless unit called the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System that has a great sounding pre-amp in it.. this goes way back to a couple years before the Back In Black album.
...Whatever works for him....
Can't argue with his success.
a guitar ans a wall of marshall thats all you need when you know how to play
Or even if you don’t know how to play. Same thing.
For sure! A wall of marshalls can cover all the guitar effects you might want like the dozens of diferent types of modulations and things like fuzz, ring modulation and all kinds of OD and distortion types. You just gotta know how to play, right?
You dont need pedals when your Rhythm Guitarist was the Greatest of all Time.
Why are you talking about James Heatfield now?
@@JimBoom92 Hetfield.
Kirk: WAH
@@JimBoom92 James is a beast of Rhythm Guitarrist but Mustaine doesn't joke too
I agree 100 %. Then i need to mention Alexi Laiho as well.
Its all in the fingers of the master!!
I had no idea but I can absolutely relate. I played in working bands for 25 years and gave up on pedals too
There is also a preamp from a certain wireless in the signal chain but nevertheless his sound is a cranked up Marshall and the SG. Works like a charm.
The best rock band in history!
That is correct, Sir.
MEH.
Rock on man🤘🤘
After Floyd and zeppelin
@@chaddevlin8545Listen to there stuff. Not the radio crap.
One of the best guitarist out there.
You can't be serious lmao
@@maxxlanglois Australian rock band AC/DC have released 18 studio albums, two soundtrack albums, three live albums, one extended play, 57 singles, 11 video albums, 52 music videos.
Dead serious. 🧐
@keving2918 so releasing stuff = good? So that means Viper is the greatest artist alive, he has released 1500 albums.
Angus young is a poor excuse of a guitar player
@maxlanglois958 feeling that bad about yourself that you come on TH-cam to dribble crap about someone that has inspired billions and would most likely outplay you in his sleep
@mattharris5067 yeah, but no. Classic case of blind fandom.
Also , his Tone begins in his fingers.
Remember that every player is unique. 😊
How is tone in the finger?
Shut up with this
A guitarist can affect the tone quite a bit with subtle things such as finger pressure, string attack, palm muting, etc. Playing with dynamics and style is all about the hands.
@@jonweston6294 that's technic not tone
Nah, tone means tone. It’s a word that is used to mean the quality and characteristic of a sound. A person’s technique/fingers absolutely changes the quality and characteristic of the sound.
Saw them during their Black Ice tour when I about 12, absolutely awesome.
As a guitarist who grew up obsessed with pedals and FX it took me embarrassingly long time to learn you could vary your clean/overdriven tones just by playing softer/harder or turning down your volume pot.
I just never liked futzing around with pedals.
You forgot about his wireless unit... His tech said in an interview that those wireless units are a big part of his tone...😎👍
A wireless unit is not an effect.
This must be why all AC/DC songs sound exactly alike
@@HipsterDoofus100 Yeah, sure kiddo.
@@Dagger_323 ok boy. You have a weird obsession with men who wear kilts. Good luck with that
@@HipsterDoofus100 Swing and a miss, kiddo. I rarely listen to AC/DC and that had nothing to do with my comment.
I don’t care!😏

Started playing after Xmas, love the videos can’t wait to start on release date next year with your guidance.
Angus 👍 AC ⚡ DC sind die Besten für mich 🤘🤘🤘⚡⚡⚡❗❤
That makes sense. I stopped using pedals for over 20 years. they cause so much trouble when gigging. I started using them again when I began to play for a Church Band and I was seated in one spot , not having to move around so much.
Leaving out a HUGE part of his sound - The Schaffer wireless tower. Solo Dallas has made a wonderful replica of this, both in a convenient pedal (that you will never turn off) and the tower, itself.
One of the best Rock N Roll Guitars of All time !!!!
I saw him at powertrip
He’s WAY LOUDER than any other band
I can’t even hear myself talking after the show
Don't forget the use of his Shaffer Vega wireless.... It's not a pedal, but it's what delivers the unique sound of Powerage, Highway to hell, and back in black 🤘
Percussion guitarist. Glorious and brutal ROCK! Angus rules!
I did know this...
And he also says there is something about his wireless rig that gives some saturation as well.
Cheers.
Love your mucic and I seen them 3 times 😅
The only “effect” that Young has ever implemented into his signal chain was the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System - a wireless unit that he would begin using in 1977 live and in the studio. It works like a clean boost
he used a wireless system that allowed to boost the volume and slightly changed his tone. he used that to help get his tone. i forget the name of the company but they worked with him and created a pedal that recreates what his wireless system did for his tone. i don’t know if he ever used the pedal but he still uses the wireless system to this day.
Dayum! This makes sense! Many have already mentioned it, but yeah. All the stage movements he does is proof of that.
@@rocknreplay It's a valid point, I wish I still had that Marshall mini stack it was great practice amp! Sorry I sold it
I’m looking at a JET City clone of the Marshall plexi. Can’t afford the real thing.
He keeps it simple! And he has the great sound for that reason.
He always uses a dalles replica pedal/tower. It’s kind of like a pre amp that they used for their wireless receivers in their back in black tour. Angus liked the tone so much that he wanted something like that when using a cables as well. There is a company who now creates these pedals and towers, solo dallas.
I simply love this guy
Output tube distortion, Angus knows the trick to get the best tone. Attenuators are great to get that tone at lower volume. EVH used a variac to reduce his amp voltage.
Angus should get a award for his playing the guitar I saw were he played the guitar with one handed HE IS GOOD
And all that time he didn’t spend mucking about with dials, he spent crafting some of the most memorable riffs ever ❤
Angus has an amazing old style wireless unit. This unit ads a unique sizzle to his tone. This though old Marshalls is the signature AC/DC tone
This is why I love this band.. no gimmicks no frills or makeup. Just pure effing rock.🤘⚡🤘
this is the best way to play guitar in my unpopular opinion.
Not to mention hs wireless system which also adds to the distinct live tone
That's true.i Have a Epiphone and also don't use pedals.Humbuckers are very sensible and give a distorted sound.Even a Boss Katana amp gives the distorsion straight from the amp.
Eddy van Halen : Welcome to the club, junior
When he turns the volume down on his guitar, he gets a nice cleaner sound when he turns the volume up on his guitar, Booooom
🎼🤘🏻
This is what you call a absolute professional
This setup is called plug and play. Like a classical guitar. The rig is sometimes important but many people waste their time setting up their tone collecting stuff, etc instead getting better performing their instrument.
