  • Chemical contamination has been detected at more than 50 farms across Maine. These ‘forever’ chemicals, known as PFAS, pose many risks to human health. While used for decades in numerous household products, these chemicals do not break down and thus accumulate in our environment and our bodies. A panel of experts will discuss these challenges, and potential solutions, from policy, agricultural, and economic perspectives, demonstrating the roles that healthcare professionals, informed citizens, and advocates can play. Join the interprofessional conversation! Participation may be applied toward students’ IP Honors Distinction application (open to all UNE students). As always, UNE’s interprofessional Knowledge Exchange events are free and open to all.
Discover Maine’s largest private University, the University of New England. UNE offers more than 40 bachelor’s degrees in needed fields, from the health professions, to the health and life sciences, to business and the humanities. We also offer 30-plus graduate, professional and doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, social work and more. UNE learning happens online and on three beautiful campuses: on the shore in Biddeford, Maine, in-town in Portland, Maine, and at our study-abroad campus in Tangier, Morocco. And they are still making PFAS chemicals. They are not even regulated by the EPA!! Our EPA like many other regulatory agencies have been hijacked by the industries they are meant to regulate. It's called "Agency Capture".

For the past 40 years, I've been using my grandma's cast iron pan. It's at least 90 years old by now.
Never in my house have we used a magical "non-stick" fry pan, & I taught my kids to use cast iron or stainless steel only.
I wonder though, if these molecules are non-reactive, why don't they just pass right through us? What is the harm?

I heard they are attracted to lipids and stay in the body for years. So they disrupt our bodily functions and cause cancer.

All the companies involved should be paying for all of this. There is no safe levels of these chemicals.

Twenty to thirty years for large scale decontamination. Is there PFAS in floating row covers I wonder? Not that it seems to matter if the stuff moves thru the air and moisture. Thanks for the great presentation.
