I love the top down method, they generally are supposed to work pretty well in rain/wet conditions too! I haven't tried it out yet though. ☯️🤟

This campfire probably doesn't work if it is windy. I camp in a lot of windy areas. What is the best campfire for windy areas?

Make the fire next to a tree where it has protection and just do a normal one
Dig a hole and make your fire in that, make a secondary hole away from the fire that leads into the base of the first hole. The air flow will keep the fire burning while your fuel is out of the wind. But do try to get yourself out of the wind as much as possible

I used to do the same thing basically except I would put the tinder and kindling on the bottom. Does putting it on the top make the fire last longer?

I'd imagine it would burn longer if there's a windbreak/ideal weather conditions to not hinder it, as the fire and heat rise, the flames are typically following it upwards to light the larger logs, as those are usually much harder to get burning when the kindling and tinder are not underneath it. It takes a relatively large flame to fully get large logs cindering, and as it continues burning the top junks, which are typically the larger logs, it therefore needs more flame. Now, doing it In this manner, it would burn more slowly as there is nothing to catch the flame and it then relies on the coals dropping down, and smouldering the bottom logs, rather than igniting them entirely. In theory, it should burn longer, but it might also be counterproductive in real survival scenarios, as it's a lot easier for unexpected forces of the elements to extinguish it. And if you're actually trying to survive, you're more focused on ensuring that the blaze gets lit and stays lit, that, combined with a limited amount of fire starting supplies/equipment/dry tinder/wood, and if your life depends on keeping that fire going, the old fashioned method might still be a better choice, though if you're just out camping and are not actually stranded or anything, there's nothing wrong with getting a fancy fire going

That is literally the opposite of how you build a good fire OK first of all when you’re trying to build a fire and it really matters you’re not gonna have nice dried cured wood like he had you can tell by the way it splits that that would’ve been cut and stacked for a season you’re gonna be usually working with something a lot wetter and greener. You’re going to want to put the fire source on the bottom, not the top, because the flame and the heat all rises, that was like the last and worst way you’d ever wanna start a fire takes twice much energy to get it going twice as long to build up a good cold bad and you’re never gonna have nice cured cut wood

wood to the bottom. It doesn't
make any sense. The kindling goes @ the bottom w/ subse-
quent bigger kindling on top
till the wood becomes thicker
& thicker. Finally, the big pieces of firewood go at the top. This expidites the whole fire to it's best. All the rest bigger wood is stood straight
up vertically. Standard opeating procedure. (Common Sense).
