    Don't feel so bad I've had so many projects go south on me. Like today I was able to salvage a piece that should have gone into the trash. But thanks to the knowledge over the years of filling trash cans a master craftman craft will emerge. As experience is out best teacher & you possess a fine skill set, so keep going. Out of trash a master can be obtained & I don't think there's any other way to get there as a craftsman.

    I thermocycle my blades at least 3 times before I quench. When I checked the grain on a test peice the grain was so fine it was amazing.
    Not trying to sound like I'm bragging.

      You are right no worries, i overheated the blade, next blades i made i turned down the gas pressure and the steel reacted much better

  • @Butterflyknifes1

    I seen videos how people make slip joints and they temper the back spring until the center of the spring is purple or blue and both ends of the spring untouched only with a light straw color temper that way it has a springiness to it
    I think you should try again

      @@Gabrulo_knifemaking and I also think it can depend on what certain metals you can use for the back spring but I'm not 100% certain on that. but I've seen people use circular saw blades to make slip joint knives and they work pretty fine and their springy and it 1095 steel is as good or 15N20

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it certainly is important the type of steel for the spring, shouldn't be too hard, i have other projects now, in future i will try again for sure

      @gabrielemagnabosco8926 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no, he clearly had some ht problems (as he correctly assessed, that grain is bad).
      When properly done, you can spring temper the whole backspring no problem.
      Assuming the steel was normalised (as it was flat stock) the quench was wrong (too hot or too much time at critical temp)

    O Man That hurt me!
    Very sorry for your loss.
    Do you know how it happened?/or what caused it to break?!?!

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! it was due to too much heat in the heat treatment, c70 steel must be quenched at around 800°C while i quenched at 1200°C and that caused the grain to grows and weakening the structure

  • @lamproknives
    @lamproknives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's really sad... But since you had a heat treat issue on the first blade, I'd assume the spring has been overheated too.. so if I was you, I'd have re-heat treated it with the other blade, and made a high temper on it.
    Don't get discouraged, you know how to do this find of knife, you just have to work on your heat treat 😉

  • @harryvanniekerk7269
    @harryvanniekerk7269 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only failure was not to temper the spring sufficiently. Pry out the pins and make another spring and replace the spring. . Dont give up!

    Thank you so much for sharing this. Now I feel a lot better seeing this also happens to a pro like you... I am currently still in a stage where I mess up more projects than I actually get to work - and that with the "easier" fixed blades since until now I never dared even trying a folder. You really gave me back some motivation with that video :D

    Mas fazer normalização nos metais por
    3 vezes seria seguro. Com o auxílio de um imã. 👏👏👏👏 . Ótimo vídeo.....
    Há fazer a mola de sustentação de 5160. Pois o corpo de Inox muito duro e não pega imã. Kkk

      I thought to salvage something but having glued and pinned the scales to the spring i would have destroyed the materials so the only thing to do was throw everything in the bin
