  • Follow along for a day with Calvin who (after landing in BGC) proclaimed "he hated the Philippines". Will the hospitality of the Filipino people, and the Diaz and Hale families change his heart? I'll give you a big hint... Don't miss day two of the adventure coming in the next video.

Filipino hospitality is best described as a 3-stage experience:
    1) Yesterday you were a STRANGER.
    2) Today you are a FRIEND.
    3) Tomorrow you will be FAMILY.

There’s absolutely no country comparable to the Filipino hospitality, and I’ve traveled extensively around the globe. There’s a reason why most cruise ships hire mostly Filipinos, they act with the same hospitable manner and truly represent our country and culture well.

With regard to the people being friendly I had given my GF all my pesos when she dropped me at the airport in Manila. I had a few hours before I could check my bags so I went to the Jolly Bee in the terminal next to baggage check. I was floored they didn’t take credit cards. A Filipina saw my difficulty and insisted she would buy my hamburger. I told her that was ok and thanked her but she would not take no for an answer. I will always remember that kindness.

The roots of the Filipino hospitality can be due to our unique circumstances, in my opinion. Places in the Philippines especially in the past are really not that accessible. Roads were not that good, no bridges but only boats to make river crossings, landslides, etc. In the past, if a person resides in one of the islands in the Visayas and a relative invites them to visit their place in Mindanao, it really required a lot of preparation and motivation (islands apart, boat rides, airplane rides, long distances to travel).
Sometimes we just give a long sigh, because to us Mindanao is just so far away (too many body aches). The distant relatives would assure the person that they would really be taken cared of if they do visit. When the visit actually happens, the person is really treated like a king or very comfortably and the relative would go out of their way to make their stay memorable.
This could also be the cause of what came to be known as Filipino time. Where if you get invited to a town fiesta and asked to be there at 12:00 PM, people don't usually come on time but an hour or two or so much later. People could come from far away places like islands away. People get lost along the way or transport broke down.
That's why for such occasions, there would also be that practice of leaving food no matter how little for each dish on the table, or a set of food set aside hidden somewhere, because there could be some people who would still come very late, as in VERY late.
Being late in this context is no big deal for us. We say, as an apology, "Paciencia na" to the persons inviting us. This means "We are sorry. Please be patient with me. We'll do better the next time around. (shit happens, you know)" Paciencia is a Spanish word for patience. Of course, in a modern day business meeting in Makati, we always want to be prompt in our business dealings. For social occasions, we're not that strict.

I'm an American who first visited the Philippines in 1988. Love at first sight. Moved here 2010. The sweetest people I've ever met. So nice that I married a Filipina. Many of us guys from America are tired of the loud, demanding, harsh, masculine women in America and are finding sweet, traditional housewife and mommy types here in the Philippines. And if Miss Universe contest REALLY knew beauty the Philippines would win EVERY year.

Hi Miles, I’ve been told that just showing gratitude and accepting their hospitality is all that is asked. I think the odds of them getting a card are very low.

We also have the practice in the West where you owe one to somebody and you need to do something in return for that specific person in return so it would be even for both of you in the future. But in Filipino culture, it's a little bit different in addition to that. You can show gratitude to the person showing you kindness, a filipino stranger at that or a foreigner, but you don't need to get back to that specific person to show your kindness to him and you're even.
What you do is to pay it forward by showing kindness and service to other people you might meet in the future, stranger or not, because you have received such kindness in the past and still continue to serve others as long as somebody needs your help. It's a virtuous cycle of showing kindness, generosity, what have you for everyone without asking for anything in return.

Maybe we should just keep it as our little secret, I personally don't care for visitors to come and visit our islands too much. We usually go out of way to be a great host to our 'visitors and that's a given in our culture.I moved to California when I was 12 due to better opportunities for my family, but I still long for the Philippine island. It's the sense of belonging I guess. and it's over there where I can truly sense and feel it. If you cant't feel this vibe, it's not for you. I don't want our island saturated with visitors anyway.
