  • First solo in PA38 Piper Tomahawk - NZWU - New Zealand
    Student Pilot: Josh Kosmala ( / captain_kosmos )
    CFI: Jon Mauchline ( / jon.mauchline )
    Aircraft: PA38 Piper Tomahawk
    Call-sign: ZK-FRS
    Airport: NZWU Whanganui Airport
    Date: 09.12.2020
Solo footage starts at 10 minutes.
    Footage includes;
    Checklists
Solo checkride including engine failure on downwind, glide approach.
Engine failure after takeoff with setup emergency landing on the beach.
    Solo
    Shutdown
Editing removes context. Have cut footage down but left the good parts and the not so good.
Armchair pilots will watch this, so here are my main observations for improvements:
Learn how to close the door with prop wash!
EFATO touch points after optimal glide.
Correct use of phraseology on the radio, "Copy"/"Roger"/"Correction", not "Affirm"
    Eyes to the sky.
Vacate radio call made too early.
    ---
    Have fun flying!
Thanks to Jon and the Wanganui Aero Club, and all my other instructors and clubs so far.

Nice job Josh! Such a special moment in any pilot’s life. Thanks for posting this - I learnt to fly in Tomahawks in Liverpool, UK in 1995 and this brings all the happy memories right back. I even remembered all the speeds and power settings etc! Ps I’m now a B787 Capt . Safe flying👍

Thanks Captain! A long time coming. I didn't like the tommy when I first flew her, but have grown to appreciate the lessons she teaches. Glad you enjoyed it.

Nice work Josh 😎👍 I'm very soon about to start pursuing my own dreams of becoming a pilot and achieving my first solo, any tips or advice for me mate?

If you can, learn to fly a GA aircraft, at a radio controlled airfield (controlled airspace).....😀

How did you film this? What did you use to hold your phone in place? And how did you get the radio audio in your video? I'm about to go solo and want to make a similar video. Cheers!

Hey Ben, best of luck! I used a regular windscreen mount using the front camera to capture myself. The cockpit view is GoPro. To capture the audio I put another phone on record in between a headset. There are laws governing recording radio in NZ so was careful to capture clearly internal convo only.

What phone mount did you use? Also did you record coms or is that from phone mount?
I plan on soloing soon in a tomahawk and want to capture it as you also did!
    Great video!

Josh, what a brilliant video! I love that technology can let you capture something like your first solo. Awesome. When I started working at Dick Smith in 2005/06 I didn’t pick you as someone interested in flying!

Well done Josh. Good calm flying....I hope that you celebrated after your first solo. Back in 1983, I did the same from Wanganui in EKI or EVM? First with the legendary Ivon Warmington, and great instructors after. Have never forgotten. Now living in OZ, I always look up when I hear an aero engine! I hope that you have a career in Aviation The only thing that I now regret....

Excelente video, felicitaciones!!! Qué cámara has utilizado como principal? Y la secundaria con tu celular, muy bien! Qué soporte has usado para el teléfono en el parabrisas? Saludos y éxitos en tu carrera!
