  • Amazon Jungle in Cuyabeno, Ecuador.
    March 2013.
This is second day of a four days tour.
In the morning of the second day, we walked in the jungle, and everyone put on the high-top rain boots uniformly distributed by the resort. In this rainforest, no matter how high-end hiking shoes and walking shoes are useless, only this kind of tall rubber rain boots like the ones we wore when we were young in China are useful.
The trail that the tour guide takes is a bit muddy, but don't walk around and it won't sink. In the very rotten swamp, there will be a fallen tree as a sidewalk, and you need a certain balance to walk on them.
The tour guide stopped and gave us jungle introduction. The couple from the United States are close to retirement age. The woman can speak some Spanish and translates for the man while listening. The problem is that she understands only a limited amount. The remaining two girls knew a little bit of Spanish, they could only translate a sentence or two of what the tour guide said. I think they can only translate that much as both English and Spanish are not their native language.
I have never been very interested in knowledge of plants and insects, and I don’t really care if I don't understand much. There are many monkeys among animals. Almost all the monkeys I have seen before are not afraid of people and can be very close to people. The monkeys in the Amazon jungle are a bit strange, they stay very far away from people, and they climb high on the top of trees.
Later, tour guide found a sloth, coiled on a high tree branch, she pointed it out to everyone, and everyone except me saw it in few minutes. Everyone tried to help me, pointing around, changing angles, and using binoculars, but I still didn't see it. The tour guide probably felt that I didn't understand anything along the way, and felt a little bit guilty, so she insisted in helping me to see it. I understand her good intentions, but it annoys me so much. I already told her that it’s okay if I can’t see it. She is still unyielding. I keep my head up, my neck is sore, and I feel dizzy and almost threw up. In the end, I came up with a way to take a picture of the approximate direction she pointed, and then zoomed in the photo to find it. When she found the blurred figure of the sloth in the photo, I looked back and finally saw it. But honestly it looks like part of a tree.
Sloths are extremely lazy animals. It is common for them to remain motionless for several hours to several days, and to move very slowly. It is also said that it has to go to the ground once a week or so because of the need to urinate. Can't it pee on a tree? I was too dizzy to ask this question.
The little girl brought by the German girl recovered after a night's rest. There were only a few chances her mother needed to carry her during the whole jungle walking. I thought about my daughter at same age. Back then, she had to be held all the way, so I praised this little girl seriously.
What interests me most in the jungle is the kind of giant tree several meters in diameter, with rattan hanging from the tree. The tour guide demonstrates how to grab the rattan and swing from one end to the other, and people can row through the air. A distance of more than ten meters.
It was the rainy season when I went, which is another difficult question to answer, whether the rainy season or the dry season is better. I ended up liking the rainy season, the only downside of the rainy season is that it's not very comfortable for people to move in the rain, other than that it's all good. During the rainy season, the river rises so high that many big trees are immersed in the water, leaving only the crowns of the trees above the water. The canopies of the trees are reflected in the blue sky and white clouds.
The resort house looks like a grass shed from the outside, and there are many furniture, beds and bathrooms inside. Its roof is covered with thick thatch, supported by wooden pillars around it, and there is no wall. The inside and outside of the house are separated by a layer of bamboo curtains, which can keep out the wind and rain, but you can still hear the insects and frogs croak outside. Rain in the Amazon can make people feel like the whole world has become a big water curtain, dense and wet.
When I entered the jungle, I was in the rain for two hours, but I couldn't observe it carefully under the rain. Later, I saw heavy rain outside the room again. Although the bamboo curtains on the four sides of the room were lowered down, they were still completely penetrating, making people feel like they were under a huge umbrella. With the giant umbrella standing in the rain, there is only a dense rustling sound left in the jungle. I think how can I experience the rainforest without entering the jungle in the rainy season?
