  • Not your average suburban couple, Adam and Christina’s edgy and spacious three-bedroom back-split has been on the market for four months…And in spite of the fair price and eight open houses, they haven’t received a single offer. Sofie says the ultra modern décor and funky furnishings are at odds with buyers’ expectations. And since the market is softening, they’ll have to pull out all the stops.
In order to better match the home to its neighborhood, Sofie comes up with a $3,900 plan. Eager to move closer to family, Adam and Christina are on board from the start. And as Anthony and the team neutralize the color scheme, expand the kitchen, and refresh the exterior, Sofie gives the couple a crash course in real estate.

I agree, Samantha. I think this series was made around end 1990s/early 2000s. The after decor looked a bit like an impersonal motel chain but probably suited the market at the time.

Samantha Irish: I agree with you that this couple was ahead of their time because watching this episode in 2021, I dont see any reason why this house didn't sell. I think it would by today's standards. It was well-kept, clean, uncluttered, finished, and had "neutral" paint colors. The only thing the couple did that I ddn't care for was painting the staircase black. I even think the curb appeal was fine.

The before house was so clean! Personally I didn't see anything wrong with it or the colors, but I'm one of those people who can look beyond that and imagine my own furnishings. Cute couple.

I agree....I like the improvements they made to the banister things, the kitchen, & the exterior paint, but the rest of it was just their taste in decor, which they would be taking with them.
They obviously take good care of their home, because it was super-clean, with nothing broken, no marks on the walls, etc.

I loved their house before the transformation. I am over 60 yrs and I can’t believe that people couldn’t see the potential. There was a few things especially the kitchen. But I loved that the style was different. I’m not bothered about what neighbours do with their homes.

    • @Pauline-ir2tr

The grey walls gave a neutral color to the house and the red and deco design leaves with the current owners. It's like having a blank slate to change to the drapes and furnishings that the new owner would like. Something as simple as a black banister rail could easily be painted white to match the other woodwork trim.

  • @colleendarley9019

The house was pretty neutral beforehand. There were small, cosmetic things that needed changed, sure but as someone who works in real estate that house was already sellable

While I agree that the outside of the house needed updating and adding prep space to the kitchen was a good idea, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the grey walls and black bannister. I do not care for the red/black decor, but grey is a neutral and many colors and types of decor will go with it. Instead they painted the wall that boring, boring oatmeal beige.

The house is clean and neat. As this is an earlier episode, the gray color might not be trendy. If they were selling the house in 2017,

  • @teddy9770
    @teddy9770 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

The house was completely fine before. What do I care about wall colours and furniture when buying a house? Many things can be changed easily and for very little money. I can't believe people are dismissing an amazing house like this because it needs a paint job. And as soon someone slaps some peachy paint on the walls they love it because they 'don't have to do anyting'. You will always have to do SOMETHING before moving into a new home. Don't tell me people are that lazy!

I'll bet the main issue was the lack of cabinets and counter space in the kitchen. Thinking of having to hire a cabinet maker would scare off a lot of buyers. Everything else was perfectly fine. Sure, the railing looks better white and the bold rug doesn't appeal to the general public, but neither of those would be deal breaker for buyers. The outside does look better with the lighter beige instead of the old brown trim. It looked more neutral afterward, but there were no major problems to begin with. I thought it was fun, but then again, I have black and that same shade of red in my home now. ❤🖤❤🖤❤

House looks great on inside with the decor toned down a bit. Kitchen definitely needs more space... but I still love the grey/white combo. To tie it together, would paint the outside white and grey on the cross woods.

Yes sooo boring. In other programmes she takes a couple with a house like this and tells them they have to snazz it up!! I love the featured house, real style. Agree the kitchen needs more work surfaces but an island would deal with that.

Why have the pictures on the walls and her necklace been fuzzed out ?

Yes, I noticed they forgot the necklace several times. There was one point where it was on again off again in the same scene.

One little thing bothered me: the top shelf above the new kitchen area. To me, it should continue to the wall.

There's was nothing wrong with this house, I can't believe they turned it into an 80s muted, boring crap hole yuck ! Even for back then, how did they not love this house. New drapes for $250, ya right 👎

Remember that the owners had to invest $3900 into the house so they will only clear $265,000.

The comparable house had deep red walls and grandma’s furniture... And then Dracula’s master bedroom! It’s a total mismatch! I bet whoever bought it didn’t know about the existence of the unsellable house, which, by the way, is full of black and white furniture, the combination that has made a billionaire out of Ikea... That’s as generic as it gets. Maybe the unsellable wasn’t gothic enough for the buyers of the comparable one.

OMG. Are you kidding me with that first comparable house?? In any other episode, that would've been the "unsellable" house that Sophie would've neutralized!! That red and black master bedroom (8:28) looked like a bachelor's wanna-be playboy love nest. All it was missing was the mirrors on the ceiling.

I accept that the changes were needed to sell the home. But why are people so hung up on furniture and cushions it’s not like it stays.

The dining room was still too dark and too monochromatic. That was a mistake in my opinion. I also don't think boxing up the traditional round column did anything to help. The biggest problem with that house was that the kitchen was way too small. Everything else was essentially okay although too dark.

I don't really know about this one. Usually the episodes are taking obviously dated houses and making them more presentable and it's clear which was before/after--this particular episode seems to be taking an already modern house and just changing the color scheme slightly (in some cases actually making it look more dated that the original. That added kitchen counter easily took the room back a few decades). The dining room upgrade at 16:36 was definitely a good change, though, as well as changing out most of the drapery.

Why oh why can I not find the The Unsellables UK Episodes 1 - 20 with Sophie Allsopp and John Rennie online? I saw a couple of those UK Episodes on TV and they were just as good as the Canadian version. Can anyone please help me find them?

Why do I watch this show? I'm never wow'ed, and the wall colors and window treatments consistently disappoint. The carpenter is good, but really, Sofie just doesn't have it.
