    Wow. I know we didn’t see that last couple of miles but you looked so GOOD in what you filmed. I say that considering your other race vids where, although still upbeat for the camera, you often looked like the fatigue was hitting you harder. Was the walk/run the ticket?
    Whatever it was, great job, Steve. What exactly was the format/course like? It appeared to be a continuous loop with a short out/back. If so, was the repetition good or bad? It would seem to be both monotonous and comforting.

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Chad! I think the run/walk was key! My heart rate stay lowed for most of the race; generally below 130, and that was huge. I felt great (except the dang hip). Yep, it was a 1.77 mile loop with about .8 of that being the out and back. We changed directions every 12 hours. The repetition was fine, but that out and back was rough mentally. Thanks again!

      @@UltraTrailSteven all my endurance type races that are flat use a walk/run method. Looking at doing Unico 100k in December on a 4 mil trail loop. Unless the terrain dictates a walk, I find it’s best to initiate it proactively. Those hip flexors get me every time.

    Not sure how I found you but I absolutely love your videos and story telling. I follow Kara and Nate, a couple who travels the world on credit card points and I recently watched his Leadville 100 race he completed this year. It inspired me to give trail running a shot at 45 years old. I've never had any ambition to run anything in my life but there's something about the struggle of doing hard things that I enjoy watching. I just completed my first 10 miles race last weekend on Monte Sano Mountain here in Alabama and was able to finish it in 2hrs and 16 minutes. I believe I'll be entering a half marathon event next month in Guntersville State Park. I'm hoping if everything goes well, I may be able to come out to Colorado in late June and find a short endurance event in Leadville or Pike's Peak. Just not sure how my body will adapt to the altitude in a week to 10 days. Anyways, thanks for sharing your stories, I look forward to see how your hip is doing in your upcoming videos!

      That's amazing! It's so rewarding to push your limits. I met Kara and Nate in Leadville, and they actually used some of my footage in their Leadville Video. Nate is also in my Leadville video a fair amount too. They were super nice !

    Awesome job! Just found this today! I signed up for the 96 hr option for this this year! I hope to get to the 100 mile mark, and in a weird way, am looking forward to the pain. I found that running is the best mental therapy for me. My very first endurance loop race is a 24 hr in April 2023.
    Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

    Only half way through. Great Video you made, Congrats on the race! Hoka is the most anti-ergonomic shoe for ultra. You gotta find the perfect Glide Combo. Something like: Toe lubricant (some Anti Callus Cream with vaseline consistency) + Injinji socks + wide toebox + flat toebox floor (not like hoka with the boat hull shape) = no blisters. Plus, NEVER pop a blister. It introduces the possibility of infection because the skin is punctured + think of blister as a water bed for your toe, that liquid is a good thing, leave it be. It provides cooling and other things. I ran on blisters in a 48 hour race. It never popped. The insane FIRE pain of the blister is gone within 10 minutes if you just run on it. The blister becomes smaller as it heals WHILE running.

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s weird how much a photo that might just seem random to most people can really have great meaning to you - for me it was at the end of BFC this year when I was bent over with my hands on my knees in exhaustion - brings back so many memories and emotions every time I look at it.

    Another great production Steven! Congrats to your win but sorry it didn’t go quite as planned. Having just finished my first 100 - link on my YT channel in 35.5 hours (an exceptionally hard 99.9% ST route with most finishers needing 30+ hours) I’ve now contemplated doing a 24h race. Are there any major tips you have for timed races vs 100 milers?

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Scott. Well most timed races are loops, which you are familiar with from the Uwharrie, but the loops are generally much shorter. Great to have friends crew you, and easier logistically for sure.

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, James! I think the blisters started in the Speedgoat 5's due to the squishy midsole. I changed to the Mafate Speed 4's about 34 miles in. The course was so dry and dusty that much of that dust was getting into the shoes, and I think also played a big part in the blisters. Thanks mate!

    • @UltraTrailSteven

      Yes I wore the VERTIX 2 as well as the APEX 2 Pro. The A2P had 43% battery after 36 hours on standard GPS, and the V2 had 60% left on All-systems on. The V2 read higher ascent and descent numbers, but it was on trail run mode, whereas the A2P was on run mode so I could use a custom workout for my run/walk. The heart rate was about 9% higher on the V2, and seemed less accurate.
