They use to make beauiful chatter on the long grain. Lost art. Anybody can do end grain.

I’m a turner in the western tradition, every time I see the Japanese masters turn I’m so very impressed. I hope people realize that these masters make almost all of their own tools, and have techniques that they have developed, I don’t think this kind of turning is taught in any vocational school, it’s learned at the feet of other masters.
I’ve always wondered how the Japanese turners get such thin beautiful bowls, but I see the bowl within a bowl jam chuck is the answer to that question.

Notice how much less fancy tools are used too, like 4 jaw chucks or m42 steel gouges, yet the finished pieces are so refined.
