Over the years, I have posted numerous videos demonstrating how I go about cleaning my Swisstrax floor. On occasion, these videos elicit negative comments about what a waste of time it is or how stupid it is or how trendy it is. I’d be lying if I said those comments don’t irritate me, but I instead of striking back, I am going to channel the educator in me and I have decided I will make this video that clearly articulates the reasons I and thousands of others prefer a Swisstrax style floor to a bare concrete or any type of epoxy coating.
I’m never going to say Swisstrax is a universally better system because it totally depends on the ways in which a garage is designed to perform. But, for me and countless others, there is no doubt that this is the right flooring system for my “garage lifestyle”.

Well said. Very educational. Felt like I was back in school listening to my teacher. Up north in our climate this really is the ultimate flooring solution for everyday use. The walking on water point is by far the best selling feature for me as well. Every person that sees my garage floor when I bring that to their attention they all agree how much of an advantage that is for 9.5 months of the year.

I am sad that people can not accept other peoples choices. For me it does not matter if it is about music, cars or floors. The person made a choice and it might not be for me but it does not mean I have the right to push them down.
If there were only one product in all segments that are "the best" then there would be no diversity in this world. That would be sad and boring in my opinion.
It is the same thing if we take detailing products. Some people like to stick to one brand and use what they have to offer. Another might try out a thousend different schampoos and still not be satisfied. We are differeent and we like different things. Sometimes the long lasting of a coating for your vehicle is the most important thing for you. Another time or for someone else it might be the slickness or the gloss that is most important.
With this said it is my privilege to be able to hang around in your garage, Rick. Even if I am not able to be there I still feel like home in your vids. I might not have made the same choices as you have done but it still does not take away anything from the experience I get from watching your vids.
Do not let them get to you. They are not worth the time.
Thanks my friend. I don't let the naysayers rent too much room in my head. It is the Internet after all, so I need to develop thicker skin. That said, 99.9% of the feedback I get from those that take time to spend with me and my videos is super positive. This was just sort of my way to set the record straight on why I think Swisstrax flooring was my best option. Now, if someone says the only thing it has going for it is the good looks, I can direct the to this video to see it offers a lot more than that.

The floor was very slippery with snow and water and just didn’t hold up. So I needed a solution that was easy to install, as well as all the points you mentioned. Growing up in the 80’s left me with very traumatic memories of the Oilers. I could never bring myself to cheer for them. Congrats on the decision to go with Swisstrax. It is such a satisfying way to make your garage a functional and comfortable place to hang out.
Did you get the ribbed style or flat? If you got the ribbed, do you find any difficulty rolling wheels across the floor, especially the creeper? Thanks!
I think 99% of the FreeFlow tiles sold are the ribbed style. And for good reason. They dry faster and they don’t show the inevitable scuffs you’re going to see on the flat style. I have zero issues with casters and creepers moving about.

In all honesty, it has been an amazing addition to my garage (and life). It all depends on what matters to you and what conditions you are up against, but Swisstrax has been one of my better decisions.
How long does it take til the gravel and mud, etc to fill up these recesses? What's the plan for cleaning under the tiles at some point? Seems to be a maintenance nightmare. What am I missing?

Did you play hockey on the trax? How was the friction with the puck?
It served as an amazing hockey practice environment until my son’s shot starting damaging everything! The only issue was when he ran on a slightly wet surface and slipped. Picks and balls slide incredibly well.
I was just about to epoxy my garage floor until I watched your video. I like the look of your Swiss Trax garage. What colors you use?
There are pros and cons to both, but I have never second guessed my choice to go with Swisstrax. I used Black Oak for the solid VinylTrax and Pearl Silver and Slate Grey for the RibTrax.

thank you. I've got a window tinting business and almost went the epoxy route over the old chipped concrete ..we spray alot of soapy water .when you say it's channeled .whear too?
and I'd it hard to sweep(piece of tiny)? why is st better then its competitor? The last longer?
Great questions. The soapy water you guys use when installing PPF would fall under the floor and either evaporate or follow the pitch of the floor. I have a drain that captures the water that falls to my floor. There is no need to sweep the Ribtrax since nothing can really sit on top of it due to the hose of the tile “ribs”. If it gets dirty, you can mop it and vacuum any debris that slips through the cracks. I think Swisstrax is the superior brand but I know many people who have gone the other route and they are doing just fine. Swisstrax is my preferred brand for various reasons. I used to have a RaceDeck floor but I’m happy with my choice to switch to Swisstrax. I hope that helps.

We live in strikingly different climates (Calgary, Alberta, CAN vs. Beaumont, Texas, USA), and we share just about all of the same reasons for loving this style of floor. I too get compliments when others see the inside of my garage and their eyes are always drawn to the floor. I plan to use your video as a reference when others ask about why I chose it. Job well done!

I've enjoyed my Swisstrax flooring now for two years now and I agree with your "10 reasons" albeit not all apply to me. Besides the mentioned fun of the design process, it's excellent appearance, cleanliness of your garage, I was most surprised that the rigid tiles felt so much softer underfoot than concrete. I too considered epoxy flooring but was leary of the critical requirements for installation and the lack of drainage/hiding of dirt that the raised Swisstrax flooring provides. While I doubt I'll need Swisstrax 6' under, the ability to move/change it up was also a selling point. I too live in a 4 season climate and winters certainly add to the muck vehicles bring with them into the garage. After the first winter, I only needed to spot surface clean the flooring; perhaps "next Spring", I'll resort to tile removal and complete cleaning under the tiles...but so far, not necessary. My neighbors frequently ask about the flooring....and it's install was easy and great project with my son-in-law too. As I've heard said, "Have Fun in Your Garage"...and Swisstrax helps improve that garage time experience.

It was way cheaper than professionally installed epoxy but costs of epoxy vary region to region. My Swisstrax floor cost me a few grand. Well worth it imo.

RAD GARAGE We strive all through our life to get to where we are now. These guys come in the middle and bring negativity. I just hate that.
There's days where one comment can get under my skin and other days they just bounce off. Truthfully, negative comments only represent a very small fraction of the feedback I have been fortunate to get over the years. But, I know what you are saying. There are too many people that use the Internet as their whipping boy and go around leaving negative comments on things they see. It's a shame.
How's the smell? Not the tiles' smell, but the smell of your garage after say a couple months of accumulating dirty underneath? I am seriously considering buying them for my garage, but that is the ONLY one concern I have. Would my garage reek in nasty smell and gases generated by all that trapped dirt?
That's a good question. I live in a high altitude city with thin, dry air pretty much year round. I have never had any issues with smelly debris build up. I have spoken with other garage guys who live in damp climates such as the Pacific North West and depending how well the water in their garages is managed, they have said mildew can develop. If you were to leave your garage for a few months currently, would you expect to have smells? The Ribtrax allows for the free movement of water under the tiles, but it really depends on the pitch of your floor. Lots of factors to consider and no two garages are the same. Meh, the comments don't really bother me. What bothers me is people that think one size fits all when we all face different conditions and factors. It's the fixed mind set that, "Whatever choice I made for me is the best choice for everyone" that gets so tiresome. It's not just in the detailing world you see it, but it sure seems to be a major feature from the stuff I see online.
Can you jack your car up on that flooring? Safe for jacks and jack stands ?
I don’t use floor jacks or jack stands now that I have a QuickJack, but before I got mine, I used a piece of rubber mat under and it worked perfectly. The casters will gouge the floor as you lift a vehicle since they sink in while positioning themselves.
Ten very valid points which I agree with all of them. For those who are interested in it, I think it really sells itself, if it's not for them, great. Their floor designer itself should satisfy anyone remotely into organization. Awesome video Rick! Ignore the keyboard warrior haters!

Look at tuff seal tiles , they look good and are actually water tight. So they protect the floor from salt , oil spills etc. walking on water would only be a benefit in a garage with poor drainage.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm pretty happy with how the floor is working for me these days, but it just goes to show that there's always ways of dealing with challenges in the garage.
@@RADGarage without floor drains I can see where the open tiles would work out in the winter. I think some community’s do not allow garage floor drains.

Is there an issue turning the wheel slightly in garage another video said this damages them.
I also would like to extend it to the little slope just beyond my garage it's like a 5 degree incline about 1 foot beyond garage door...you think that's possible to get a slight angle on the end?
I also have a big tool box like you on those small metal caster wheels...does that damage anything?

I am glad this video has helped inform your decision. As I state in the video, this may not be the best option for some people based on all the factors, but it has been just a truly valuable addition to my garage (and my life!).
I have no issues in my garage with the floor twisting when I turn the wheel. I do know some people have experienced this, but I don't actually know why it is a problem for some and not for others. I assume I am find since my Swisstrax tiles span the entire area of my garage floor which prevents any tiles from moving, but that is just an assumption. I do know that Swisstrax does offer little clips that secure tiles together if this becomes and issue, but like I say, that has never been an issue for me.
If I am understanding you correctly, you want the floor to extend out of the garage a foot or so onto the angled apron of the concrete that butts up against your driveway. I prefer to have no parts of the floor exposed to the outside, but I don't think there would be a problem with that. But, if the tiles join right around the spot where the angle of the floor begins, you could see tiles becoming disconnected as you walk or drive over that portion.
In my experience, moving heavy items on casters does not leave indentations or anything. Because the "ribs" on the Ribtrax tiles are spherical, it actually helps with the movement of heavy items since there is less surface resistance. I am often amazed at how the round shape of the tiles makes moving anything in the garage easier. The only casters I fear are those on the bottom of jacks that can slice down into the "ribs" when the jack is lifting a vehicle and moving to keep itself centred. I had that happen a few times in the past before I threw a protective rubber mat down under the jack.

Nice review, but I'll pass. I really like the idea of not walking on water. In fact, my wife and I have both been injured at least once from sliding on our painted floor when it was wet. So that is a huge consideration for us. But some of the stuff you like is a serious drawback to me. For starters, our floor doesn't slope. Any water or fluid that spills is going to puddle until it dries... or I'll have to pull up the floor to clean it. Which leads us right to the bit about "hiding" dirt. I don't want to have to move everything and pull up my floor every couple months to get rid of all the dirt and dropped hardware that has fallen through the grooves.
Yeah, there’s no one system that can perfectly deal with winter but I have fine tuned my process so I’m as close to perfection as I can be.

That's exactly why I clicked your video, to see why it worked for you rather than just seeing some doofus being all excited about it five minutes after installing it. Now I know that it's a solid product that just doesn't suit my needs.
I appreciate your outlook. I have had way too many people weigh in on my Swisstrax floor with little consideration or understanding of what factors I face when it comes to maintaining a garage that allows me to do what I like to do in the space. No one way works for everyone. For me, this has been an amazing floor system, but I fully recognize it is not right for every garage.

Hi Rick, new to your channel, and I’ve been thinking bout swisstrax. Also checked out OG’s videos as well. Just wanted your opinion. Live in NE Ohio so similar situation to you with respect to snow, salt etc. Currently I have two vinyl mats with edges designed to hold all the crap in but then we are walking in puddles of water & dirt. My garage floor isn’t perfect it has cracks and suck. It doesn’t drain out but rather to the sides. But I like the idea of the water & dirt going to the bottom leaving our walking space clean. Biggest question is how “perfect” does the concrete have to be?? Thanks for your time. So far loving your content. Take care!
Happy to provide you with my personal insights, Adam. I am familiar with the mats you are using as a number of my neighbours use them. To me, they save the floor from becoming a disaster, but they create their own disasters in the process. The 15.75" footprint of each Swisstrax tile allows for a surprising amount of give to the floor when it is used on less-than-ideal surfaces. I have a 1" drop over a 4' area where my drain runs and the Swisstrax adapts well to that area. Can you put the Swisstrax floor over an old concrete floor? We have weather similar to yours and the old concrete is very cracked and has extensive pitting that has turned into valleys. Do we have to repair the old floor first? Do I have to pull up the Swisstrax annually to clean it, or can it be hosed down in place?? We do not have heat in the garage and we just use it as a garage not a workshop. Thanks.

Great info. Using a floor jack and stands would be a requirement for me. Can Swisstrax floor withstand this without having to use special rubber pads underneath. If not then that would be a dealbreaker for me.

Personally, I would always use a protective mat. You could see if Swisstrax supplies samples and do a test for yourself. I did a test with my previous RaceDeck Free Flow floor and when the jack was being raised, the casters would sink into the floor just slightly, but the fact that the casters move with each pump mean they would carve little grooves into the tiles as the entire jack centered itself. If you are always using a jack, Swisstrax Ribtrax or RaceDick Free Flow probably are not the right choice for your purposes. Like I said in the video, this type of flooring may not be right for everyone. I have a Quickjack and because it displaces the weight over a wide footprint, I have no issues with using it in conjunction with the floor, but because jacks concentrate the pressure in a relatively small area, it is going to leave a mark.
Opinion are like rear holes if you know what i mean. Almost everyone has one. Some are good and some suck. In today age, people think and believe that other's need to do as they do. Screw that. You do you. The garage works for you. I've toss the idea of the flooring. My issue is, that i rent here like you mentioned. But do i want to spend the money on this location, not sure. But will when i do purchase my home. Like i said in my comment about your garage. There is something relaxing about it. Could be the colors or maybe the equipment or even the organization of the layout. So keep doing you and let it roll off.

No offense at all to you but the only people that take the time to make a video and talk about Swisstrax are weekend warriors and I’m working full time in my shop. I’m curious how it holds up/clean up when you have a truck that’s really muddy and it falls off and fills the voids in the floor, rust falling off as you undo stuck fasteners, how does it handle draining soap out after using a foam cannon on a car or multiple cars one after another. One guy said that floor jacks don’t hurt it but what about a jack stand that has a smaller and skinnier footprint. Sorry that I just bombarded you with questions…
Hi Brain. First off I must give full props to you and other full-time detailers. It doesn't surprise me that the videos you see about Swisstrax are made by us weekend warriors. I guess it is because we have more spare time than the true warriors such as yourself to mess around with videos! I completely understand your question about how practical a Swisstrax floor would be in a shop. I know a lot of detailing shops use the Swisstrax floor but predominantly in the "cleaner" areas of the shop where paint correction and coatings are being completed. It can make sense in a wash bay scenario, but the dirt will begin to build up under the tiles and will eventually need to be addressed depending on how fast and furious it accumulates. I have a friend that recently swapped out his Swisstrax floor for a polyaspartic coating because he was tired of the maintenance involved in evacuating the dirt from under the floor after washing. Floor jacks indeed can cause damage to the tiles. As the jack positions itself while being "jacked", the casters will sink into the floor and make little gauges as the jack moves itself into position. I have seen this with my own eyes. Concentrating so much weight on casters or jack stands causes damage. The only way to mitigate this is by using a protective piece of rubber matting or something that will help disperse that weight. I use a Quickjack lift and that does a great job of dispersing a vehicle's weight in such a way that no damage is caused to the floor. I don't see why people wouldn't like it. People tastes tend to change overtime so if in 5 years you don't like it. You can remove some tiles add some colors and refresh the design as you see fit. If you accidentally damage a piece of your flooring pop it out and replace it, can't do that with epoxy flooring. Also if you ever decide to move you can take it with you to your new house or sell it with the house.

Thanks for watching. The vinyl trax give a classy look and feel to the garage, but they are by no means as durable as the ribtrax. They are great for foot traffic, but cars driving on them would not end well since they are prone to scratches and scuffs. They are more for the appearance that the practically of automobiles. I am very happy with them for my garage since they finish the space off nicely.

Ok but for somebody who wants low maintenance this is clearly not the right product.
I don’t agree. I can go months without cleaning my floor in the winter and still have a clean dry surface to walk on. It really is dependent on where you live and what you do in the garage.
Is there any reason why you chose this “ribbedtrax” over diamondtrax where it doesn’t seep into the tile.
Yes, the Ribtrax corral the water and allow me to walk on a dry surface in a climate where the floor is usually wet. It also allows dirt, mud, rocks and other road debris a place to hide between floor cleans. I have other videos about my Swisstrax ownership experience and I often talk about the fact that the Ribtrax suit my needs because I do not enjoy traipsing around on a wet and muddy garage floor.

Yeah, it's not a product that will appeal to 100% of people, but it does tick a lot of boxes for me and I have never regretted by decision. I would loathe the maintenance of an epoxy coating given the climate we have here in Alberta. (I have spent a LOT of time in Red Deer over the years. My Grandpa used to own S&B Auto Body which is now home to the Vellner RV dealership).

Due to the design of the tiles you don’t see the floor unless you are looking directly down. I would not say you need to paint the floor. I opt to acrylic seal the floor so it has some protection, but that’s just me.

Yep, probably not for everyone, but it does add lots of value as you describe. Question, How will the floor handle front tires that need to turn to the left or right? Will the floor tiles want to move with the wheels and maybe come apart. We have a 2 car garage and in order for the cars to fit, we aim the front of the car to the corner of the garage and then turn a little to the right or left depending on the side of the garage the car is parking on..
I have never had issues with that. The floor is wall to wall and I think that anchors everything in place. That said, a friend had issues with separation when he would put his car horizontally in his garage to detail it. Let me reach out to him to get his input. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. Just a couple of questions. On part of my floor I will be doing mechanical work on my motorcycles. I look at the open grid system and worry if I will lose small screws and washers that drop on the floor and fall into the grid. Second, is it easy to roll around on with a chair or stool? Would I be better of with the flatter open grid for the seating area?
Hi. Yes, it is possible you have small items fall through the cracks of the tile, but it isn't a huge deal to lift a tile to retrieve what is underneath. I definitely see that as a very minor issue. I have rolled around the Ribtrax with all kinds of different creepers and stools and never had a problem.

Maintaining the Ribtrax tiles depends on how dirty they get. Up here in Canada, the amount and degree of winter much that gets dragged into the garage makes periodic removal of the floor necessary. If you live down in Florida you could probably go a decade without having to clean the floor under the tiles. I have Swisstracks too and love it. I m not quite as keen as you are with the cleaning, but all your points are valid. I too live in Calgary, and I think it is the perfect floor for our climate, and it looks top notch.

That's great to hear. Winters are a challenge no matter what you have going on with your garage floor, but the Swisstrax does provide some benefits. Be aware, there will be some maintenance requirements but nothing a rugged Canadian can't handle.

I live in Florida do you think I can use it all the way down my drive way in the heat with no cover
I have seen a few people use them around a swimming pool but never for a driveway. I would be a bit nervous how they would deal with constant exposure to the Florida sun and other elements. I know of no one up here in Canada who would consider using this type of flooring system on a garage. It just wouldn't work.

Are you able to pressure wash the floor with out removing the tiles ?
Yeah, but it wouldn't be as efficient a process since you would be able to see the dirt as you are washing it. I feel the only way you can ensure you have cleared 100% of the dirt is by doing the full removal and replacement process I demonstrated in the video I posted a few days ago.

Great job explaining Swisstrax flooring. Currently installing it into my second garage. For us weekend “detailing worriers” we get it. I spend more time in the garage than you can believe and having a Swisstrax floor makes that time more enjoyable #11 reason.

I have RaceDeck free flow and I love them. Really help make it more comfortable restoring my 67 mustang. Your videos helped in making my purchasing decision even though I went with Racedeck... I keep forwarding your SwissTrax videos to a friend of mine hoping to nudge him to finally pull the trigger and get his own.
I had my RD floor for 7 or 8 years and it never let me down. How are you finding the maintenance?
It works for me... I do a quick vacuuming with shop vac... Or blower... Sometimes lift up the ends and run water through it. My garage floor already had stains so depending on angle I could see the stains if I stood directly on top of it... So I laid down some thick black landscaping fabric/plastic first then I installed the racedeck. That took care of that concern for me.
Interesting. When you lift the ends and run water through it, how many tiles are we talking? I find it heavy and awkward to do that. Would love to hear more about your technique. Does the landscaping fabric get all messy?
I lift up about 4 to 6 ft wide at a time from the edge near garage using a couple of pieces of spare wood or random items that lift it up at least 6 to 8 inches. Then spray water towards edge of garage door. Granted, it probably doesn't get as dirty as yours. Just some random vehicle fluids, dust, metal shavings, etc. As far as landscaping fabric, it was mainly cosmetic as I cloud see the already stained garage floor underneath and the gray color. The black underneath helps with color underneath. Eventually, I want to do a full clean like in ur videos. For now, shop vac usually does it for me

Hey RAD Garage. Amazing video and thanks a lot for this. What do you use for your sealer on the concrete? Does it have a salt inhibitor in it? We use so much salt here in Ottawa and I want to protect my slab from degrading more then it already has. (It’s 40 years old). I am looking at Swisstrax or Racedeck or something along those lines as well. It’s great to hear a review from someone that actually sees some winters with all the salt buildup!
I use a high gloss acrylic sealer on my concrete pad. It wears off pretty quickly though, so I re-apply every summer. I feel it adds some protection to the concrete by not letting the salt water seep into the concrete. Even on a 40-year-old slab, simply rolling on a layer of sealer will do a LOT to keep it from degrading further. It's like putting a clear coat on an old paint job. Swisstrax is a viable option given you have the ability and energy to maintain it. You will find dirt builds up quickly from all the dirty slush that gets dragged in under your car(s).
@@RADGarage That’s great. Yah I have no problem sweeping out the dirt and what not during the winter and popping the tiles out for a good deep clean every spring. I do a full deep clean every spring anyways so its only a little bit more time!

Hey Rick - maybe you've mentioned it in a previous upload but my memory is failing me....do you use and/or recommend a particular sealer for the concrete? I live in the Northeast US so brutal winters are the norm & I'm thinking that might be step #1 before SwissTrax.

Yeah, I use the same stuff. I don't think it lasts as long on the garage floor but it gets me a good year of coverage/protection.

I didn't mind the design aspect of swisstrack in the beginning a few years ago, but now i tend to find it too much, too distracting to the eye mostly from the checkerboard look. It would be cool if swisstrack offer a different pattern/design.
Edit: i just check their entire catalogue, they have some new option since last time i checked, like the Ribtrax smooth and vinyl flooring. The ribtrax smooth is flatter, holes seems smaller so might not let dirt get under the floor as effectively. Still have the checkerboard look but less distracting it seems...
I think mine is not very distracting to the eye. In fact, It's a bit boring to the eye. I thought about Ribtrax Smooth but they aren't as effective, like you say, at allowing dirt to fall through and I think they will look dirtier than the traditional Ribtrax look.
@@RADGarage I get the feeling that the floor on your garage is something that you want to attract the eye, whereas i might prefer something more neutral. The smooth option could be interesting, I haven't read or seen the experience from anyone about it atm, but it's a different option.
I think my favorite part of your floor is the vinyl border, it adds something, a touch of class imo.

What? Negative comments....crazy ! The flooring is Coooool! Anything more effective would be super expensive and requiring redoing the concrete floor and putting a central drain. But I would think that would block up with mud.
Yeah, it's kind of an ongoing problem here, but the way things are working now isn't too bad. I am trying to find a contractor to work with me about installing a trench drain that would capture the water after snow melts. For some reason, concrete is a tricky business over here.

RAD GARAGE I lift a couple of rows of tile by the door, and each morning use my wet vac to suck it up before I open the door, seems to work well enough, but a trench would be the best. May need to be heated though.
There's a few homes in my neighborhood with heated garages and the trench system I'm thinking about. I'm hoping it happens this year.

What type of strange system is that at about the 4 minute mark? There are bins and a rod that the spray bottles hang on. Want to rethink my garage this spring and looking for ideas.
