    You're so honest and relatable, I love this video! I'm starting a Neuroscience PhD program (in the US) in a few weeks and this made me feel a little less stressed, so thank you!

    Thanks so much for this video, Julia! I'm starting a 3-year PhD program in Germany this Fall (coming from Canada where PhDs are 5-6 years long) and have a lot of trepidation about the short timeline. It's nice to know that it's totally doable (and when to anticipate burnout)! Thanks again!!

      Thank you! Ahhh so exciting! Yes 3 years is plenty - you will be fine. Just remember your PhD is a marathon, not a sprint - balance your energy over the long distance!

    Great video! I love hearing from people who are at the end of their PhD and still smiling! I've decided to end my current PhD a year and a half in because I really didn't enjoy the project/lack of independence. However, still determined to get a PhD so I start a new one in September.

      Thank you so much! Smiling has got me through and I really enjoyed my project - as everyone should, so well done for realising yours wasn’t right for you. Good luck for your new PhD - I am sure you will thrive!

    I'm so similar to you! I just went to uni because I thought it was the only way to become an accountant and I specifically picked my undergrad program because it didn't have a mandatory dissertation. Towards the end of year two, I was like "What if I just did a dissertation? That'd be funny" and then I did. I can't even explain it, but as I was doing it, it just felt exactly like what I was supposed to be doing. I didn't want to spend my time on anything else, and that's when I started considering that an academic career might be the way for me.
    In the end I did up becoming an accountant, but only to get a professional qualification. In the accounting field a professional qualification is much more important than an academia qualification, even in academia. However, I've almost finished my qualification, and I am so excited to be applying to a PhD afterwards and hopefully return to academia, aka my true home.
    Your videos are doing a great job tiding me over until I can get back!

    Hello! Amazing video! I’m an undegrad (3rd year) neuroscience student here in Canada and I’ve been thinking about getting either into medicine or just continue the academic pathway up to Ph.D. I just dont like how unstable the job market is for people with a Ph.D here in Canada idk if it’s the same in the UK. Which got me thinking about going for MD/PhD which sounds very daunting tbh but I feel like it’s the only way I can pursue both my interests in meidicne and neuroscience. Have you heard anything about this? What do you think about this? I’m sure I’ll have no life outside school for the next 10-12 years but I would hopefully reach my dream of being a neurologist and a neuroscientist at the same time!

    Could I focus the PhD in a more philosophical area of neuroscience? Like I would like to connect how religion and certain beliefs are beneficial/detrimental to physical aspects of cognitive health. Also connecting morality to what we physically know about how the brain works. Things of that sort?

    • @juliaraveyscience
      @juliaraveyscience  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably! This might be more likely to be offered in a philosophy or psychology department

    Could you tell the benefits of doing the PhD in UK?
    I have been considering getting my PhD from USA since the duration of the course is more than UK and which gave me the idea of a much more relaxed PhD but seeing your video made me feel like i could complete it in a shorter period.

    • @juliaraveyscience
      @juliaraveyscience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! So I think in the UK, your PhD is more likely to be soley research with a few commitments to teaching etc (more your choice) whereas in the US, I think they have exams in the first year (we don't) plus then obligatory teaching on certain programmes. There are some programmes which do not have that though!
      I would say 3 years to do all lab work and writing is a tad too short but with the rotation year, it helps you find your flow faster so a 3 year project is more achievable! Plus, I think 3 year programmes allow you to write up after funding finishes, whereas mine does not.
      So many pros and cons! If you have any questions, just message me and I can try to help :)

      I would look on university websites for details on their pre-requisites for A-level. You might be able to do natural sciences at university and take neuroscience modules if you can't find a 'pure' neuroscience course (which normally has a common first year with other biology students anyway!)

      Ahhh thank you! And so great to hear you want to study neuroscience. I would say be really passionate about your subject - read books outside the norm, pick a niche to really get into and add your opinion to some of the most current research out there on that topic. Showing you can understand the work and have a sense of what is going well/not well is really impressive!
