We had about 160 acres tiled in December. Our winter was mild with most precipitation in the form of rain. Enough rain fell to test the system- worked great. From our past experience, we are expecting an immediate yield improvement. 3/4 of what we tiled is also irrigated. Our theory is its cheaper right now to make what we own the best it can be, instead of buying ground.

The trick with running those drilles reverse for a start is a very good thing to do in soft materials, or wood with a surface, you don't wanna scratch.
Coming from an electrical contractor that have been drilling in all kinds of materials for years.
Good job BJ for making tiling simple to understand.

Looks like spring is coming. It surprised me how near to sea level you are ( 700 feet) considering you are quite a way inland. You seem to have quite a mild climate in relation to other parts of the US on a similar latitude, is that an altitude thing or just luck ! We are in North Devon UK at about 520 feet and 6 miles from the sea and very wet so far this spring. This spring is certainly going to test you with all the projects falling at once, good luck Brian. Will be following progress from the comfort of my arm chair 😅.

Tilling is worth the fuss, you pay for it one way or another. By either spending the money to put it in and collect the rewards over the years to pay it back or with a bad yield over the years.

Pays back quick best thing to do on a farm, we run a cultivator over ours 2 to 3 times, im going to run a chisel on my runs this spring go shallow throw some dirt around. Wished It would of got dry in February been nice got it worked, won't be dry anytime soon now, east central il. Kinda glad now its not done had some big rains so prolly best it wasn't done. Great job Brian. I farmed all my life in Ontario and we tile drained every acre we owned. The best investment we ever made. It improved the soil structure so much and increased yields tremendously. I do have one concern about your 8" header along those trees. We have had problems with tree roots getting into the tile. Should you take trees out. Another thought is some people around here have run a sacrificial 4" tile between the main and the trees. Good luck finishing really enjoy tour channel.

A tilled field allows the water from rain to soak in the dirt better a no till field in a heavy rain just runs off were as the tilled soaks in allowing better crops and even a light rain soaks in a tilled field rather than sitting on top or just running off. Tilling also pits the nutrients back in the soil. From what my grandfather taught me you have to turn the dirt or the crops take nutrients out of the soil in which you have to add fertilizer for fertility of crops. Shit horse rabbit cow even sludge from treatment plants. Even such as compost. Take lateral lines from a septic for example the grass grows faster and greener
