It's not a homophobic dad. It's more he is not sure how to behave as he thinks he has to be different around them. If he was homophobic he would be more forthright in his prejudice.
It wasn't hatred. It was a joke. He didn't say anything with intentions to be offensive and he was simply curious because his generation had minimal interaction with gay/lesbian people. There are seriously homophobic people out there especially of his generation so to be criticizing how he behaved is wild.
He's someone from a time when homophobia was normal, and the only things he knows about gay people are ignorant stereotypes. He genuinely seems to want to support his son but keeps tripping over himself and getting it all wrong. That makes it awkward, and also funny. I sort of feel sorry for him, although he does come out with some awful stuff. Confused old dinosaur trying to come to terms with the modern world. He's trying. Failing badly but he's trying.
