Im baffled how have you ensured the square is parallel and perpendicular to the X & Y slideways.

Using the same technique that you would use to align your vise to the way travels - using a stationary dial indicator against the edge of the square, then moving the table and adjusting the square position to get zero variation as the table is moved. Basic alignment technique. th-cam.com/video/r50TYp98Vgk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Hmdf_4w9h3umaYL-

@David_Best thanks for your reply.....so you clock the square in one axis first, then run the dial indicator a long the square at 90 degrees to the plane you clocked in.

What's the best way to secure the machinists square to the table when checking these things?

Either a strong magnet setup or a strap clamp like the type you’d use to secure raw material directly to the table for milling operations.

Ok, that was great. I clearly missed a few things here when setting up my RF45 (2018 almost new). Locking up the head does cause quite a few thou deflection so I see why it's important. I was lucky enough to talk to Stephan Gotswinter a few months ago on a youTube live thing he had going on. He's got an RF45 as well and we discussed rigidity issues with the mill.

Well what if you have at your house a mill haas tm3 linear rails guide blocks Then what shall suffer in silence I had my spindle rebuilt and now those tram in by shimming tween spindle flange and casting that is part of the z axis up and down motion It's not like a Bridgeport Never done this to one at work cuz deep pockets means just git knew mill Machinist since 1999 last century so I can tram a head in and align the vise 5 to 10 minutes today was my first day and try and attempt
To achieve my goal got myself Cpl shim kits I ordered from the tm3 any chance of you having tips ideas of making this not such a guess and try them repeat process until desired outcome lol it's a 2008 so hey im poor man got 3 kids There a isn't any videos on this So im all alone as usual lol skills and high intelligence is all I possess and some tools but not a giant granite surface plate square I wish I had but if u do have any advice except for call haas service team to come hang out a day or two pls hola lol

I’m sorry, but I have been unable to parse your question into something clear from your rambling comment. Please clarify what you need help with. I have a line a few machines with linear rails, but not a Haas.

@@David_Best is there a trick or a way to estimate how thick a shim to put where My idea is being my other nova base and arm with another indicator and loosen the bolts toGet the spindle sweep and the drop from my other indicator will give me a good estimate on where to put what thickness of shim

@@David_Best but I'm gonna use my starrett no 199 master level to double check level twist and bow if any it's got 4 level screws on 6 inch diameter pads I made

I’ve made the shim thickness calcs several times. You can use simple triangular trigonometry calculations or you can draw it up in CAD and dimension the resulting gaps to bring things into alignment. It’s just geometry.
