Taking all the measurements for the 928/ F136 swap. Now with more confusion, standard!

  • I got the bellhousing back from the machine shop with time to sit down and take all the measurements I needed to figure out the best plan for the way forward on the 928/F136 conversion. Just when I thought I was close to a solution....

Your sighs certainly tells us the story of “what did i got myself into…” lol.
I was wondering what if you had a rolling chassis to use as a mock up car so that you keep the blue car intact until you have of the swap variables figured out…and then i recalled u had a parts cars that i guess you sold it then?
Anyway, keep up with the good work and don’t get discouraged by all of the challenges that lie ahead. Nothing has ever been written about those who take the easy way out 😊

Yes I did. I sold the running parts car since it was too nice to part out. I'll keep grinding, but it's definitely not the easy path right now.

You need to look at what 100 % can’t be moved . 1 rear axle back to the shifter ( you don’t show that measurement. That has to be set in stone that measurement . After that you can move the engine closer or farther away.
The output from the clutch . Can you get that shaft bordered. So it becomes hollow and accepts the smaller input shaft then you don’t need an adapter or
Just extend them shafted off the engine all the way back to the rear of the car to the rear gearbox and then put the adapter there . I know it’s get a new shaft and bearing but you wouldn’t have the problem of having both the clutch , gearbox , adapter all in the one area

Why do you need a custom push clutch release? Doesn't the 928 already have that? I would use the as many Porsche parts as possible. I'm doing something similar with a VR6 into a 944. I'm going to use the Porsche bell housing in front of the torque tube and make an adapter from the bell housing to the engine....granted I haven't done it yet.

I think it depends on the pressure plate and how it's designed. I agree the 928 parts would be easier, just not sure at this point if they are compatible with anything custom. Still lots to learn

@@ThrottleGrotto My plan for my swap is to use the 944 bell housing and associated clutch parts, Then use a clutch and flywheel that fits the motor, the only custom piece would then be the adapter plate. Multiple ways to make that, I haven’t figured out spacing yet but I haven’t mocked everything up yet. In my case, the motor I’m using gets swapped a lot, but typically onto an Audi trans that has everything made already. So I kinda have a base point but it should be similar issues. Custom adapter plate seems lots easier than cutting the torque tube. The Maserati bell housing seems pretty big which is taking up your real estate. I also have a 928 but I’m just pulling motor and resealing.

Why keep the torque tube? Can't you create a mount for the shifter and a mount for a carrier bearing if you need it?

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

that does have merit - I don't think there's any existing mounts in the tunnel to bolt anything to, so those would all be custom. Was trying to use as many stock parts as possible to limit the amount of things I had to fab.

I would have dropped the torque tube too. You could use a longer one piece prop shaft or two piece with a bracket for a center bearing. A lot of cars have this and if you find a Maserati prop shaft, maybe you can use the front parts of it and use the shaft from another car onto that?
If you stick to the torque tube, maybe you should cut it on the rear end instead?
Remember also that the interior will hide a lot of metal fabrication of the chassis, meaning Noone will be able to see it later.
And at last, a company that specializes on shortening drive shaft and prop shafts may have much better prices than cnc machining companies, meaning if you find parts that fits it's easier to weld parts together than making cnc machined custom parts
      And remember don't give up🙂

Where are you located? I have a parts car with the engine already out that you could use. Let me know if you would like to use it. Cheers

Are you throwing the transaxle in without refurbing anything? Had no idea you were swapping motors. That’s why I get for skipping content. Keep up the good work
