This team was the best team ever India has produced. After 1975 Indian hockey crashed and took 42 years to recover. 1976 western hockey teams and their federations used their influence to convert grass fields to artificial turf. Asian hockey teams lost badly because lack of adoptable style. Germany, holand,Australia,New Zealand,England ,Belgium, and the rich countries used their money power to build turf fields but developing countries struggled to build turf fields. Playing on the turf is totally different than grass . Finally after long time Indian team is back on track. Majority people in India listened running commentary on radios . Television was not available.thanks for providing the match clips to the viewers. I hope Indian politicians, business community, film industry and general public will support the national sport rather than promoting the colonial sports cricket.

Indians were amazing. No a single player lost his temper in such a crucial final. They played an excellent and high quality hockey. I pay tribute to Indian team and also tribute to Pakistan team. They jointly showed the world how to play beautiful hockey.

One village or town in indian punjab could boast of 4 key players from my there! Great news and sincere thanks to all the wonderful, loving gentlemen for sharing such truly heartening information.

What a legendary starcast lined up in this WC final from both teams. Ajitpal Singh, Ashok Kumar, Aslam Sher Khan, Harcharan Singh, Mohinder Singh, Surjit Singh, Govinda, Philips, Shivaji Pawar, Islahuddin Siddiqui, Safdar Abbas, Akhtar Rasool, Samiullah Khan, Zahid Sheikh, Manzoor Jr, Manzoor Hasan, Munawwar uz Zaman and others ..... just sublime.

Golden moment. I watched this match live on tv as a 12 yrs old boy at home with family. Being Malaysian indians of tamil origin, We were very happy to witness the nemerous time Olympic champion to be crowned as the world champion in our soil. I still have the news paper cuttings pasted in my large 'sports book' about the match including the whole Malaysian and lndian teams. Malaysia achieved 4th place with many lndian (Tamil) players in our national team. Sadly, that was the best ever achievement by us. Thereafter and to date, the performance of Msian team is in shamble. Anyway, happy to note lndia hockey is back @ Tokyo 2020 with a bronze winning achievement.

I was 13 years old when India and Pak played this final and India lifted the world cup Hockey. For us Young India ( just 28 years after Independence) this was a very proud moment. I remember our family had gone out for lunch with family friends at the fancy Ashoka restaurant Nagpur. But my friends and brother could NOT concentrate on the food. So we stood outside the restaurant at a paan thela where we could listen to the live commentary of the legendary Jasdev singh and others. I remember vividly ( it was a tense and close contest) when India scored the winning goal through Ashok Kumar and when the long whistle blew and India was world champions, we broke into a frenzied dance and people joined and there was a big traffic jam on the main street. there were mad celebrations. Hockey had brought name and fame to Indian sports whereas we were not doing well in cricket those days. Great moments for India and the Indian team and the Pakistani team were also absolutely brilliant! It was an amazing contest. Hockey at that time was MUCH MORE POPULAR than cricket! it was after this victory that the EUROPEAN TEAMS realized they could NOT match India and pak in field hockey -- played on natural grass and they INVENTED Artifical turf CALLED ASTRO TURF which should have never happened. it was done only because European nations did NOT have the brilliant talent subcontinent had and the whole game was CONVERTED into pure power play ( no skills needed... only strength!) and this LED to the DEATH of Hockey's popularity. Aaj bhi if Hockey is moved back to natural grass as it should have always been India and pak would be the best teams in the world. Shame on Hockey federation International to have allowed this CHEATING and FOUL PLAY

Today the things have completely reversed after 50 years. India is top decision maker in cricket and major decision maker in hockey. In fact it's Saud that India is cricket and cricket is India! Western countries ( like Australia and UK) which used to attack us with racial slurs 40 years back their players are lining up to get jobs in India's IPL. Times have changed for India Vishnu 💪😊

This was when, our hockey was excellent until Indira Gandhi complained to Ashiwani Kumar for having too many Sikhs in the team. As they say, rest is history. A player from historical place Jhansi(UP). Though struggle made by Captain Ajitpal Singh, Surajeet Singh can't be forgotten.Excellant penalty strock conversation into goal by penalty strock specialist Mohinder Singh are our golden memories. Thanks, for the then entire hockey team. Winning a hockey world cup after defeating Pakistan with Sehnaj Shekh,Samiullah is still thrilling us

I remember the running commentary of this match in the evening. The great radio commentators were Jasdev Singh and Joga Rao in Hindi and Dr Narotam Puri in English. We could get a feel that of live match through their effective commentary. What a magical voice Late S Jasdev Singh had. Those were the days when Asian Style Hockey was world famous. India, Pakistan and Malaysia were the leaders.
Baldev Singh , Ajit Singh, Chand Singh and Varinder Singh also used to be the active members of this team.
I can see Ashok Kumar ( son of Dhyan Chand, the Magician of Hockey)
is playing Right Out , Ajit Pawar Centre Forward and Harcharan Singh Left Out. What a great video taking us down the memory lane.

Yes this 1975 Indian team captained by Ajitpal Singh thus far is the only team to win the World Cup and that was achieved by beating arch rivals Pakistan 2-1 at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
It has been 46 years since India won the World Cup but unfortunately future Indian national teams have failed to win the World Cup.
As if the 1975 World Cup triumph is like a "curse" to India just like England winning the football 1966 World Cup at Wembley.
India's 1975 World Cup victory came with a heavy price because at the same Australia were analysing and studying the strengths and weaknesses of India that came in handy the following year at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. And India were very fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw in a group match against the Kookaburras at the same World Cup at Kuala Lumpur.

It is very nice to know that you are goalkeeper Leslie Fernandez's wife. During the 3rd World Cup I was just studying 7th standard. But it was Leslie Fernandez who played a major role in the semi-final match between India and Malaysia. By the way I am the nephew of Late. A. Claudius of Coimbatore who was a Hockey Coach in Coimbatore. He was a key man when the team visited Coimbatore to play exhibition match soon after India's victory. A year back I also read an article about Leslie Fernandez in The Hindu Metroplus, stating that he had his schooling in Campions, Trichy. Convey my wishes to Leslie.

Cricket replaced hockey in both countries, Indian hockey have shown some improvement whereas Pakistan hockey is still at lowest in history of Pakistan Hockey.

Quite amazing : we heard the radio running commentaries in those days, more particularly those world hockey giants to see them play under the old rule of hockey , now in the screen. Perfect game with wonderful stick tricks, scooping, dribbling, perfect passing, not using the wrong blade of the stick, most interesting to see them bullying at the start of the game and after every goal scored. It's really eye-catching whenever these giants met in the Olympics I during those 1960s and 1970s. The Yankees have made the wonderful game into like ice hockey. Thanks for the gentleman who enabled lovers like me made this possible thro U tube

That 1975 3rd World Cup hockey final between India and Pakistan at the Merdeka Stadium was beamed live by RTM on the afternoon of March 15.
I was then fifteen and was about to sit for the LCE in seven months time.
In 1975 there was no coloured TV transmission until 1978.So it was in black and white when Malaysian hockey fans including me watched that historic classic between two Asian hockey giants.
Pakistan were technically and tactically the superior side but India were more determined and spirited. Moreover Pakistan had to do without skipper Abdul Rashid who was injured just before the tournament.
And India came back strongly despite being a goal down like what they did with Malaysia in the semi finals to win 2-1 albeit with the winning goal a controversial one awarded by the late umpire G.Vijayanathan.
