You're absolutely right. Mohinder Singh was our relative and from Jalandhar Dist. Few years after this epic match, I met Pakistani team players in Patiala, they were training as part of Combined Asian team. Needless to say, they were all very nice and spoke Punjabi. This was when, our hockey was excellent until Indira Gandhi complained to Ashiwani Kumar for having too many Sikhs in the team. As they say, rest is history. Btw, Ashiwani Kumar published that letter in the later part of his life. It can be found on Internet now. It will take a miracle to recover from the debacle now.

Sorry to say but Hindu mentality still the same, Sikhs are the one protecting them so far but some they will also realize these bastards are not even sincere to their mother. It’s is best all ethnicities should have their own independent state. Specially in Asia subcontinent. All can live in peace and can still support each other.

In those days hockey was all skill, all the laws and rules have been changed to suit Europeans. Please correct me if I am wrong, this was India’s only world cup win. Pakistan won next two world cups 1978 and 1982. They won there last world cup in 1994. I think they are ranked 18 in the world now. It’s nice to see India reemerge as one of the top teams. We need to start playing field hockey on real grass instead of astroturf so that India/Pakistan can dominate world hockey again. Astroturf ruins the game -- it's not fun to watch, and it just looks like ice hockey. Also, it's unfair on Asian countries because it's expensive, not to mention bad for the environment. This is much more subtle and interesting, I feel, instead of just being a raw power game. The Europeans were crap at hockey, and then they introduced astroturf which killed our game.

In contrast to the Olympic gold won,Pakistan have a far better record than India when it comes to the World Cup.
India only won the World Cup once in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur.Their final opponents then were Pakistan who because of a controversial goal had to settle for the silver in the 2-1 defeat.
But Pakistan made amends for that painful 1975 World Cup final defeat by winning the fourth edition of the World Cup in Argentina beating Holland 3-2 in the final.Whereas India suffered the ignominy of losing 7-0 to West Germany and to Canada 2-0.
Then India hosted the fifth edition of the World Cup in 1981/1982 but failed to qualify for the semifinals losing 4-3 to Holland and 2-1 to Australia. In contrast Pakistan emerged as the World Cup champions for the third winning all its matches in style including a 12-3 rout of New Zealand and a 3-1 beating of West Germany in the final.
While India continuously failed to regain back the World Cup Pakistan won their fourth World Cup in Sydney edging Holland in the final via penalty flicks.
Yes it is a fact.Pakistan have a far better World Cup record than India although the latter won eight Olympic gold medals the last at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

I was 13 years old when India and Pak played this final and India lifted the world cup Hockey. For us Young India ( just 28 years after Independence) this was a very proud moment. I remember our family had gone out for lunch with family friends at the fancy Ashoka restaurant Nagpur. But my friends and brother could NOT concentrate on the food. So we stood outside the restaurant at a paan thela where we could listen to the live commentary of the legendary Jasdev singh and others. I remember vividly ( it was a tense and close contest) when India scored the winning goal through Ashok Kumar and when the long whistle blew and India was world champions, we broke into a frenzied dance and people joined and there was a big traffic jam on the main street. there were mad celebrations. Hockey had brought name and fame to Indian sports whereas we were not doing well in cricket those days. Great moments for India and the Indian team and the Pakistani team were also absolutely brilliant! It was an amazing contest. Hockey at that time was MUCH MORE POPULAR than cricket! it was after this victory that the EUROPEAN TEAMS realized they could NOT match India and pak in field hockey -- played on natural grass and they INVENTED Artifical turf CALLED ASTRO TURF which should have never happened. it was done only because European nations did NOT have the brilliant talent subcontinent had and the whole game was CONVERTED into pure power play ( no skills needed... only strength!) and this LED to the DEATH of Hockey's popularity. Aaj bhi if Hockey is moved back to natural grass as it should have always been India and pak would be the best teams in the world. Shame on Hockey federation International to have allowed this CHEATING and FOUL PLAY

I still have the news paper cuttings pasted in my large 'sports book' about the match including the whole Malaysian and lndian teams. Malaysia achieved 4th place with many lndian (Tamil) players in our national team. Sadly, that was the best ever achievement by us. Thereafter and to date, the performance of Msian team is in shamble. Anyway, happy to note lndia hockey is back @ Tokyo 2020 with a bronze winning achievement.

Great though the Indian team that won the 1975 World Cup team but their failure to beat Australia in a group match drawing only 1-1 was the harbinger of things to come.
Australia had sounded a warning to the eventual World Cup champions not to take them lightly in future meeting.
India basked in winning the 1975 World Cup beating their arch rival Pakistan 2-1 in the final. That World Cup triumph in Kuala Lumpur made up for the painful penalty flicks defeat to host Holland in the 1973 final at Amsterdam. Then India led 2-0 with a brace from Surjit Singh and should have scored more after that. But the Dutch short corner specialist Ties Kruize equalized also with a brace at 2-2.With barely thirty one seconds left on the clock India were awarded a penalty stroke.B.P.Govinda had the great chance to score and the World Cup could be India's.But he blew that chance and Maarten Sikkings made a great save.
Yes that 1975 World Cup triumph at the Merdeka Stadium made up for the bitter disappointment of losing the 1973 final.
But one country in particular already have spotted weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the Indian team. They had learnt a lot from that 1-1 draw with India in a group match in Kuala Lumpur.Australia that is and the Kockaburras will indeed be a haunting nightmare for India in the years to come and even until now.
The following year at the Montreal Summer Olympics in 1976 the nightmare for Indian hockey began.Australia handed a 6-1 thrashing to India. The Kockaburras indeed would be the nemisis to India in international hockey.

Correct. Australia has been India's nemesis since the 1980's. Even in India's dark days - we cud gather some result against Germany or the Netherlands but the Aussies were a tough nut to crack. Have not figured out why?. Actually the Aussies play similar to us compared to the power game of Germany or Holland.

The replay had clearly shown that and that is the reason the replay of this goal has been hidden in this video.

Yes this 1975 Indian team captained by Ajitpal Singh thus far is the only team to win the World Cup and that was achieved by beating arch rivals Pakistan 2-1 at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
It has been 46 years since India won the World Cup but unfortunately future Indian national teams have failed to win the World Cup.
As if the 1975 World Cup triumph is like a "curse" to India just like England winning the football 1966 World Cup at Wembley.
India's 1975 World Cup victory came with a heavy price because at the same Australia were analysing and studying the strengths and weaknesses of India that came in handy the following year at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. And India were very fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw in a group match against the Kookaburras at the same World Cup at Kuala Lumpur.

When Pakistan scored first ,I remember switching off the radio in despair and switching it on later on with great anxiety to find the scores tied!! Amidst nail biting tension I listened to the rest of the match and India's historic win. What a team that was. Sadly with the unwarranted rise in cricket , hockey was sidelined and these heroes forgotten. For me this was India's greatest sporting moment ever. I didn't sleep after that full night with the excitement and next day the Goan daily screamed the headlines'India's greatest hour''. So many functions to felicitate the 1983 cricket world cup winning team but none for these heroes. Shame

That 1975 3rd World Cup hockey final between India and Pakistan at the Merdeka Stadium was beamed live by RTM on the afternoon of March 15.
I was then fifteen and was about to sit for the LCE in seven months time.
In 1975 there was no coloured TV transmission until 1978.So it was in black and white when Malaysian hockey fans including me watched that historic classic between two Asian hockey giants.
Pakistan were technically and tactically the superior side but India were more determined and spirited. Moreover Pakistan had to do without skipper Abdul Rashid who was injured just before the tournament.
And India came back strongly despite being a goal down like what they did with Malaysia in the semi finals to win 2-1 albeit with the winning goal a controversial one awarded by the late umpire G.Vijayanathan.

Till today india or pakistan would have been champions of hockey. But because of astoturf europes are dominating us. They dont have any skill just passing and trapping and shooting. But to tackle with hockey stick only indians and pakistan are heroes.
