Michael was really happy with Brooke. She had the innocence & intelligence he looked for in a woman. MJ started dating Lisa Marie only when Brooke turned down his marriage proposal. Brooke wanted a chance at a normal life, so she went off to college, which Michael couldn’t do & he was in awe that she had the choice.
Her answers about her being involved romantically to MJ are abiguous and doesn't answer what Oprah is asking! I think something happened there between the two of them romantically, but what I love the most is the way she speaks about him.. I'm not sure what kind of relationship they did have but I have no doubt how much they loved each other..

Because I think she’s being honest here, they loved each other in a way that doesn’t quite fit the usual categories of love. I mean, Michael was obviously in love with her at some point, or he wouldn’t have proposed, and maybe at one point, Brooke was in love with him (based on her stated reason for turning him down). But I think for them to have remained in each other’s lives, the nature of that love would have to change. We have a limited vocabulary for the various ways we love each other, but in other cultures, they have a more diverse vocabulary for love. That’s why Brooke struggles to explain it - our language doesn’t have a word for it.

They were going out on dates, talking on the phone for hours, etc., and they were both romantically interested, supposedly talked about marriage, if that's not dating, what is.
Well, there was. She just didn't get the scoop. And Brooke was protective and didn't help her. At the end, they both say Michael should be himself. I'm not sure he knew who that was. I don't know that Michael understood his sexuality or sexual orientation and many other things about himself in his own lifetime. He remains an enigma in many respects. But what a great talent. RIP.
