  • Wesley Majirawe, in his final year at the University of Technology, Lae, stands as a testament to the power of hope and support. Studying for a Bachelor of Property Studies, Wesley extends heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and the life-changing Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP).
From the remote Simbari Village in Marawaka, Eastern Highlands, Wesley’s story is one of remarkable resilience and unyielding spirit. His academic path began humbly in Marawaka, stretched through the halls of Kainantu Secondary School, and was sustained by his sheer determination amid financial strife. To afford his education, Wesley took on roles as a security guard and a chicken seller in Lae, all while tackling his matriculation studies through Unitech’s Department of Distance Learning.
The journey was fraught with challenges, as financial barriers nearly extinguished his university dreams post-matriculation. Yet, it was HELP that reignited his hope, supporting him through three transformative years at university. Now, in his climactic final year, Wesley is immersed in a work experience program in Port Moresby, bringing his dreams closer to reality.
HELP's embrace has reached beyond Wesley, uplifting over 35,000 students across 58 institutions with an investment of K178 million by 2023. At the recent Unitech graduation ceremony, Prime Minister Marape renewed his pledge to education, announcing an additional K50 million for 2024 into the programme.
Additionally, the Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme (TESAS) has propelled over 67,763 students from 2020 to 2023 with K291 million in funding. This year alone, 19,600 students will benefit from a record K83 million, continuing the legacy of support that changes lives and shapes futures.
Wesley’s journey and the stories of thousands more illuminate the profound impact of Marape Government support on enabling dreams and building futures in Papua New Guinea.

We are many in that same shoe. Thank you government for the very wise decision, and this is a real equal distribution of the resources. I am commenting as a student here in Divine Word University.

Brother, your journey is encouraging to our young people who are also facing many challenges along the way. Life is tough, but that is not an excuse for us to give up. 🙏

I may dislike some policies of Marape government and disapprove of the way economy is managed but I totally approve of Marape's flagship HELP program. Its helping many PNG families especially the economically marginalised populace. Credit must be given where it is due.

Papua New Guinea is so previleged to have a visionary leader as the captain of MV PNG in these very trying times. On the same note, the HELP program is similar to the one used here in Australia and I suppose India and other Western countries as well!!!Thanks young man for such inspiring stories..
