Love it, a lot of great depth. Unfortunately my CK broke exactly when yours did when you pressed "ok" and I also didn't save any of that lol. maybe have a warning before that section for anyone following step by step. Thanks again for putting your time into this.
I've been really wanting to make a fleshed out follower for almost a year now, but kept putting it off solely due to how daunting the endeavor is (and life of course, but I digress). Your videos have singlehandedly re-sparked my interest in the project; you're extremely thorough and very easy to follow and listen to (not to mention the provided scripts are also an immense help, as learning how to make them from scratch in and of itself seemed like its own big, scary beast to tackle LOL)! I got so invested in following your tutorial that I lost track of time, and suddenly I only have about three hours before I have to wake up for work. x] But I would totally do it again. Thank you for taking the time to create, edit, and post these videos to the public!! I seriously can't express my appreciation enough! :>
I love how I lost my progress to a crash a little before the point where you also crashed, so I just got done panic saving when you started talking about how important it is to make sure you save often
This is a fantastic tutorial. Easy to follow, pleasant to watch, and explained in a way I can more or less understand being someone who has barely used mods let alone made any. Thank you so much!
I love these guides. Clear, concise, and thorough. Most how-to guides on extremely complicated stuff like this either exhaust me with obvious details and long-winded explanations or assume I know much more than I do; I find this guide to be a perfect middle ground, navigating through a confusing topic with clear visuals, proven expertise, and attached resources. Honestly a masterclass, great work
Joseph, this is amazing! I've wanted to make a follower mod for a good four years now, but I never got to it because I thought myself incapable. I decided to go for it now, and I'm so glad to have found your tutorials because they're so in-depth! Who better to teach about this than the person who's created one of the best followers ever made for this game? I'm truly grateful, thank you for taking the time to do all this!
Cant wait for the next part! I've had a whole story and personality planned out for a follower and this is by far the best tutorial I've found! I love your work on lucien, and hes a permanent part of my group when I play (usually its him and kaiden which I find to be a hilarious duo). I just want to thank you for all the work you're putting towards this! Hoping you'll go over how to give them things like dialogue for when you're on certain quests, or unique dialogue for the first time you meet them!

This has been so incredibly helpful. I can't wait to flesh out my character mod. My birthday is coming up and my wife is apparently getting me the sound stuff that was recommended in Part 0 and I literally can't wait. Subscribed and endorsed Lucien on the Nexus. Keep up the good work.
That "hello" at the beginning and I was like "oh! LUCIEN!" Thank you very much for the mod and this tutorial! You are awesome! Your voice is as sunny as a picnic in spring time with friends.
Dear Joseph, THANK YOU for these beautifully presented tutorials! I've learned a great deal about what I thought I knew but didn't. You're a wonderful teacher as well as a modder. You're the wizard of Oz drawing aside the curtain!
It's crazy how calm and enthusiastic you remain when your CK crashed, I kept getting crashes and it was irritating me so much! Fixed for the moment though. I've said it before and I will say it again, thank you so much for this series!
Im super excited to dig into this one. And dont you think for a second that Ive abandoned my Lucien ripoff mod! I just got sidetracked with a big Fallout 4 protagonist revoice project haha
A splendid tutorial! Everything right where you said it would be-- my Creation Kit even crashed at the same time as yours 😂 Seriously an awesome video; very informative!
It seems, if you give sparks to a follower and it accidentally hits you, they will be "dismissed". I found that removing the code at 20:40 helps :) Anyway, I love the tutorial it really helped me out and it seems my dragonborn is a maso.
Thank you mate, this is the perfect tutorial video. Previously, I'd been looking all over for explanations of how to do X thing and struggling because I'm not entirely sure what I was supposed to be asking for. Every problem I encountered was an uphill battle of researching for hours and hours. I've now made my follower with all the vanilla dialogue! This was the first time I tried to make a follower, the way you explained how the script works step by step really showed that you knew what you were talking about which I really appreciate. Here's a like and subscribed!
Hey, Joseph! Your tutorials are top notch! They've helped me a lot while I dive into the modding world myself! Lucien inspired me to look into modding my own custom voiced follower and this tutorial helped me along his development! I was wondering if you'd be covering how to fix the Dialogue bug without the need to save and reload? Its a pain in the neck and I haven't found anyone who could help fixing that issue.
Great great tutorial. You know another that may be of help, custom scene creation using followers and such. The way u make Lucien talk with folks is amazing and rather hard to accomplish seeing that there's so many conditions. Looking forward to it!
Thank you so much for these videos, I've been looking everywhere for a detailed tutorial on custom followers. Your videos were by far the best and easiest to follow, thank you so much!
Just wanted to take a moment in the middle of my journey through these videos to say bless you, sir! I've always been interested in the process and idea of creating a truly custom follower but always got a bit lost or turned around while trying to figure it out in the past. You've helped me get further than I ever have and I really appreciate that! So, thank you! And thank you, again, too, for having given us Lucien Flavius as a friend to our Dragonborns! You're the best! :D
@@Venzynt Yes, actually! I’ll have to give you a more detailed response when I’m at my computer, but apparently if you’re using Oldrim (like me) an update moved scripts from their original location and Creation Kit gets confused and won’t let you create a new one until you move it back. I’m out and about at the moment, but I’ll come back and link the forums that helped me once I get back home.
thanks mate, i found these videos so helpful, made my follower in a mod and wanted to be able to keep them, this means so much to me as i made them in the image of someone i lost, i know thats silly but it just means so much for me, again thankyou,
Howdy! I'm loving this series so far. I've wanted to make a follower mod for a long time. But I've encountered an error, and Google isn't helping. When I go to create a new Script (as described at 7:00 onwards) I simply get an error message that says: "Unable to create the new script file." I've followed the Tutorial word-for-word thus far, and have tried running the Creation Kit in administrator mode, but the error persists. I really hope somebody can help me, and many thanks in advance if you can. Edit: I fixed it! I had to go into my Skyrim Special Edition/Data and look for the Scripts.rar file. Once I'd found it, right-click and select 'Extract Here'. Once that was done, I could now create scripts. Hope this helps someone who faces the same problem!
I created one CV follower using this tutorial and it works great! -I create two more following this method on the same esp but they will not speak or have even a dialogue menu pop up.- -I'm not sure what I did wrong.- EDIT solved! I had something marked wrong in the conditions because I use too similar of labels. Everything works perfectly now! This guide it great!
Can you explain in greater detail how you fixed it I’m having a similar issue. My character never talk to me the first time through a new save. But if I reload he then works. I want to place him in a starting area so I would like to fix this.
I was curious to know if subtitles will ever be added to the video series? They're great, sometimes it's just easier to progress reading then listening. Thank you for these videos!
if anyone else is having trouble with your menu doubling up when entering the favour state, just tick the ‘goodbye’ box. this exits the follower dialogue menu but keeps the favour menu open :-) thanks as always for the tutorial
Gonna take some work but it's lovely that I can use this as a checklist to see where I went wrong xD Thanks for making this tutorial series! Just what I need to get back into it and succeed! :D Without this I wouldn't have realized that I didn't have a global variable xD
I know this video is old and you may already know this, but you can search for plugins by typing out the first few letters. It still sucks when you have a ton of mods with the same starting letters, but it's better than having to eyeball it.
I want to buy you so, so many drinks - coffee, tea, beer, wine, spirits... player's choice. XD I also wan to speak with you about some potential narration for hire. Really brilliant stuff - from Lu's creation and performance, to this tutorial/vid. :)
I have never for the life of me been able to get the favor dialogue to work. ^^; I'll have to go through my followers and see what the heck I've done differently, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the Alias package data. Hmmm. Hmmmm. Also that "Waiting Quest Objective" thing is absolutely brilliant!
Hello there, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but when I ask my follower to follow me, I get the correct response but they don't follow me and I don't get the rest of the dialogue tree. I wasn't sure if any follower overhaul mods were the reason for this or whether its just something simple in the CK that I've done wrong. Any help is appreciated. Many thanks!
I am having an issue with the voice sounds, i used pre recorded voices from a game, and had to conver them from stereo to mono, but no matter what i do to the .wav files in audacity, the voices are SO DAMN LOW in game. I have no idea if the process of converting from stereo to mono ruins the files, but if someone can help me with that, i would be very glad.
I know this video is rather old, but I'm hoping I can still aquire some help, so here goes. I'm at the second script stage "Appendix 2B" and getting a couple of compiling errors. 1st error: 'cannot cast a quest to a mycharacterquestaliasscript, types are incompatible', and 2nd error: 'DismissFollower is not a function or does not exist .' Any ideas? Edit: Ok, chalk this up as PEBKAC; (problem exists between keyboard and chair), I made the mistake of pasting namedcharacteraquestaliasscript when all I had to change correctly was mycharacterController. problem solved.
This is a great walkthrough, and I love Joseph's teaching style, but I hit a problem. Every time I click on "properties" for the quest script, CK crashes! Ye Olde 0xc0000005. It's consistently at that spot, and it's not just for the new script, but any of the pre-existing ones too. I ran through all the fixes I could find online to no avail. Anyone have a clue?
Hey Joseph, I love these tutorials! I've been working on a male follower with my voice actor over the quarantine and these videos are helping a lot with troubleshooting. Do you plan on covering how to add quest-related commentary as well? I'm assuming from the title of these videos that you will, but I just wanted to ask anyway for clarification. Keep up the great work!
I have followed everything in the video (including making proper changes to the script, with no compiler error), but my character will not start dialogue with me. Idk what to do.
Mine failed on the appendix 2B section. Saying “cannot cast quest to a donmckquestaliasscript, types are incampatible” and “dissmissfollower is not a function or does not exist” anyhelp?
05:20 JR being his amazing self 05:25 Me: you're not going to exit, save, and come back again? 16:05 JR priceless! LMAO 16:05 I deserve it! AMAZING Tutorial- your complete series, most up to date, magnetic energy, makes people want to watch more of.
I know you solved it when you talked about it, but to anyone following along: at 16:00 that crash will ALWAYS happen if you try to add scripts to a quest that you just created. You need to create the quest first, press okay, and then open it again. Only then you can mess with scripts without it crashing. Finnicky little program, eh?
Yeah AFT is a bit eager like that. If you're comfortable with scripting you could look up GetFormFromFile and use it to automatically add your follower to AFT's exclusion faction. But otherwise you'll have to advise users not to use AFT to control your follower.
Hey Joseph, thanks a lot for this video, couldnt do this it without it. One question, everytime I have filled the properties for my script and hit okay, 16:00 ck crashes. Like every time. Doesnt give me warning or anything, just shuts down and Im unable to move foward. Any ideas?
This is beyond amazing! I am having a mystery issue though; First test follower I made worked great. Went on to start a slightly more serious one and somehow am stuck at the follower menu testing phase. All menu items seem present as if she is following me, but will not physically follow. She will obey favor commands, but when dismissed (the "follower leaves your service" message does appear, and her response dialogue is the assigned dismissal dialogue), she won't move, and interacting with her again reveals the same menu as if she was not dismissed / still following. I've rewatched the videos several times to try to catch the error (clearly my error somewhere) but for the life of me can't find where I deviated. Any tips? I'm at a loss.
Thank you, glad you like it! Sorry you're running into trouble. Are you sure you added the packages to the alias, and that you filled in the script properties?
@@JosephRussell I actually think I figured it out - from what I can tell, it had more to do with my save file issue during testing I think. Smooth sailing now! Much appreciated!
hi! i just finished up with making my follower, but when i go to talk to him in-game, all that comes up is "talk" & when i hit 'e,' nothing happens at all. i tried quicksaving/loading & that didn't work, either, & now i'm wondering if i did something wrong with the scripts. they all compiled correctly, but i'm not sure what's happened. thanks in advance for any help!
@@TacticalShad0ws im having the exact same problem. I think that we were supposed to put our follower in the dismissedfollowerfaction at some point. because the 1st dialog in meeting has our follower in that faction.
I’m having trouble with one step. I am making a Vigilant of stendarr follower and he is in the hall of the vigilant. I would like him to be recruited as soon as the player starts a new game, but I keep getting the dialogue bug. How do other mods fix this so that the mods dialogue shows up with out having to save and reload every-time? Any help would be appreciated.
im having problems with Appendix 2B when i go to save it gives me compilation failed. i did change the name to the one i had on top but it keeps poping up
I was having the same problem, i seem to have fixed it. When he says to do the same for “GetOwningQuest” put the controller script name rather than the alias script name. The compliation runs successfully for me now, havent tested the mod yet though
Would it be possible to add a prerequisite to the “follow me” dialogue. Using another custom quest in the conditions box. Essentially have a conversation initiated with jcuzzi where he gives you a quest to complete in order to earn him as a follower.
If I followed this tutorial and also the next tutorial, then launched the game to talk to my follower, do you know what could be the cause of why I am unable to start a conversation with my follower? I attempt to talk to him and nothing happens. Thanks for any potential help! Great video series btw.
Can I change dialogue for one specific custom npc without screwing up dialogue that’s used for other npcs. I’d like to change up the bards to have all songs unlocked without having to do the quests
Hey, so it isn't working for me. I am trying to make the follower get dismissed and it won't leave. The option is there, but they just don't leave. Same goes for waiting; they say the line but don't do it. I need some help, because I feel I did everything like you said, but maybe I missed something? I don't know, can someone help me?
Having an issue when compiling the script, it’s bringing up another name, one which doesn’t exist anymore, it won’t use the prefix for the follower I remade

1st error: 'cannot cast a quest to a mycharacterquestaliasscript, types are incompatible', and 2nd error: 'DismissFollower is not a function or does not exist
.' Any ideas?
Anyone have a clue?
thank you so much for doing this!
thank you Joseph for greatest tutorial
Hey Joseph, I love these tutorials! I've been working on a male follower with my voice actor over the quarantine and these videos are helping a lot with troubleshooting.
Do you plan on covering how to add quest-related commentary as well? I'm assuming from the title of these videos that you will, but I just wanted to ask anyway for clarification.
Keep up the great work!
8:00 If anyone is having compilation errors, be sure to double check you copied the entire script, sometimes pieces end up between the ads
I have followed everything in the video (including making proper changes to the script, with no compiler error), but my character will not start dialogue with me. Idk what to do.
Did you try a save and reload in front of them?
Mine failed on the appendix 2B section. Saying “cannot cast quest to a donmckquestaliasscript, types are incampatible” and “dissmissfollower is not a function or does not exist” anyhelp?
Cute cat
I didn't know Luke Skywalker was such a nice person :3 ! Jokes aside, thanks so much for your work
05:20 JR being his amazing self
05:25 Me: you're not going to exit, save, and come back again?
16:05 JR priceless! LMAO
16:05 I deserve it!
Ok after a couple of attempts Project Clara is now ready to be voiced
Oddly enough.... AFT still recognizes Clara
Yeah AFT is a bit eager like that. If you're comfortable with scripting you could look up GetFormFromFile and use it to automatically add your follower to AFT's exclusion faction. But otherwise you'll have to advise users not to use AFT to control your follower.
Super helpful! thanks!
Thank you so much this tutorial is so helpful :D
This is really helping me
I know I just keep reposting the same comment on each part of this series but... YES YES YES!!!! XD
excellent tutorial
Vary nicely made thank you for this
You're welcome!
Great series. Thanks!
Hey Joseph, thanks a lot for this video, couldnt do this it without it. One question, everytime I have filled the properties for my script and hit okay, 16:00 ck crashes. Like every time. Doesnt give me warning or anything, just shuts down and Im unable to move foward. Any ideas?
This is beyond amazing! I am having a mystery issue though;
First test follower I made worked great.
These tutorials are really helping!! Any idea when part 3 will be released?
Hopefully this weekend :)
@@JosephRussell YES! I've been checking back every day for it (while binging Lucien the Dragonborn), thanks again!
hi! i just finished up with making my follower, but when i go to talk to him in-game, all that comes up is "talk" & when i hit 'e,' nothing happens at all. i tried quicksaving/loading & that didn't work, either, & now i'm wondering if i did something wrong with the scripts. they all compiled correctly, but i'm not sure what's happened. thanks in advance for any help!
Same here. Have you found a fix yet?
@@TacticalShad0ws im having the exact same problem. I think that we were supposed to put our follower in the dismissedfollowerfaction at some point. because the 1st dialog in meeting has our follower in that faction.
I’m having trouble with one step. I am making a Vigilant of stendarr follower and he is in the hall of the vigilant. I would like him to be recruited as soon as the player starts a new game, but I keep getting the dialogue bug. How do other mods fix this so that the mods dialogue shows up with out having to save and reload every-time?
Any help would be appreciated.
im having problems with Appendix 2B when i go to save it gives me compilation failed. i did change the name to the one i had on top but it keeps poping up
Did you find a solution? Same problem here
@@emo_grinch_440 nope
@@silverbee970 me neither, however, the first part works for me. I seen an old reddit post with the same problem and the same script
I was having the same problem, i seem to have fixed it. When he says to do the same for “GetOwningQuest” put the controller script name rather than the alias script name. The compliation runs successfully for me now, havent tested the mod yet though
@@brianmckinney3843 thank you so fricken much
Would it be possible to add a prerequisite to the “follow me” dialogue.
@Austin bird Thank you!! you just saved me for potential hours of debugging
Did you ever figure this out? Same thing is happening to me
Can I change dialogue for one specific custom npc without screwing up dialogue that’s used for other npcs. I’d like to change up the bards to have all songs unlocked without having to do the quests
voce e um anjo, só de ter legenda nos seus videos me ajudou e mt com meu problema, mais um inscrito!!!!!
This is awesome. I now have a dog follower.
Thank you!
Having an issue when compiling the script, it’s bringing up another name, one which doesn’t exist anymore, it won’t use the prefix for the follower I remade
