I am *dying* to see Pearl and Rose meet for the first time and an episode dedicated to showing us how their relationship formed. For all we know, Rose maybe was totally leading her on- or Rose was maybe naive being (young?) and didn't realise Pearl was falling *hard* for her. I don't believe for a second that Pearl initiated anything- she was probably really by the book and strictly followed the rules before Rose. So I want to see how Rose managed to convince a high status Pearl that Earth was the bomb and worth starting a war over... Gaaah... I just need to see more information!
I believe what they are trying to say is what caused Pearl to have such major feelings for Pink Diamond in the first place. Pink Diamond didn't just command Pearl to love her like that. I do agree with them though because seeing what caused Pearl to like Rose/Pink Diamond like that would be interesting. I'm also hyped to see what Bismuth and the other diamonds have to say about Rose lying about almost everything. ;>
Am I the only one who thinks Pearl would be doing herself a favor if she didn't get into any other romantic type of relationships? Pearl has been alongside Pink/Rose for literally 6000 years or so. Everything Pearl has ever done was for Pink. Not only did she simply adore her Diamond because she's her Pearl and she's supposed to do that, she felt an overwhelming amount of romantic feelings for her which were never really returned. And then Greg and Steven happened. It's only been 14 years which is nothing in a Gem's life. That must feel like a week or two to a human. Since Pink is gone and Pearl has been "single", she's been making sooo much progress moving on from Pink. Sure she still breaks down and cries whole rivers worth of tears every now and then, but she's been slowly detaching her from Pink, getting over her, moving on from her. Now that Pink is gone, Pearl can re-invent herself. Do things, get new interests, hobbies and contacts, making her own decisions without ever HAVING to think about Pink. But Pink is still engraved in her memory. Of course, how can she not be? Now how would happen if Pearl got into a relationship (with the love returned this time), especially with Mystery Girl/Sabina who bears so much resemblance to Rose? She would give it her all but it wouldn't feel like it did with Pink so that would break her and she'd feel awful. Or, since Sabina looks so much like Rose, Pearl starts to absolutely DEVOTE herself to Sabina like she did with Pink and it would scare her off and break Pearl's heart. Many other possibilities here, but one way or another, Pearl would be too occupied with her new relationship and the mindset that comes with it to continue this tremendous growth she's gone through. Like, let's be real here, what good outcome could a new relationship have for Pearl with her history and all? And the fact that she's a Gem to begin with? I can't see Pearl having a Totally Normal and Healthy Relationship™ that brings her joy and happiness and fulfilment and what have you. Not with the history she has with Pink. Or the fact that she's a Gem so Sabina would die far before she would and Pearl would have her heart broken again. I think if she'd just keep focusing on herself, she'll eventually be way happier.
Rens fully agreed. She has progressed a lot in a small amount of time (for gems). I want the show to allow her to fully make her own identity independent of Rose before she gets with a Rose look alike. Ugh..
Maybe Pearl can have a date(s) with Mistery Girl, realize that she is doing it for the wrong reasons and understand that she needs to be alone and love herself before having a relationship hmmmmm

Maybe this is rose/pink diamond going through her rebellious teen stage shown by her thinking that her parents don’t care even though they do and wanting to run away from home and as she grew she wanted to start a family causing Steven’s birth but before steven , when she was just thinking about it if she were to flip her gem she could have been a-lot bigger going into her early twenties stage and when she finally found out she was pregnant she went into her late thirty’s.
Maaaan at this point i'd like to think that she can, if not for herself, then at least for the sake of Steven. I'd like to think that if she had to choose between getting Pink Diamond back and keeping Steven, she'd choose Steven. Also, i think it'd be really healthy for her to move on. Maybe it would be with mystery girl, even as a rebound from Pink, and i think that would be fine enough because it could be seen as her making another step to move on. Not fair on Mystery girl, but i just wanna see Pearl move on TT^TT.
to be honest i'd think she'd gladly take rose over steven if there were no repercussions outside of the act of choosing. sure she loves steven but she's known him for the gem equivalent of days with the entirety of that time carrying the undertone that he is the proof of the great tragedy that is her life rended while she's known rose for so very long and has so many strong feelings tied to her that, even now, have her so damaged that she can't even allow herself to think about anything relating to rose without stripping and sanitizing it fully first
In the other hand, I think Steven loves and cares for Pearl (in a non romantic way, but in a "Mother-Son" way) and apreciates her more than PD/Rose ever did.
I think that the deciding factor would be Rose's feelings. Pearl didn't try to take her gem out of baby Steven even though it was hard for her, because she knew that is what Rose wanted, however if she knew Rose wanted to return and it had to be her or Steven I could see her feeling guilty but trying to justify it in all sorts of ways. Can't see the others letting her do that though, especially after the big reveal.
How about Pearl takes the Gem out of Steven and let Rose reform and use some healing tears like Steven did on Lars and BOOM! Everybody gets to live together forever (except Greg)
Steven is half gem., not a human with a gem in their stomach I don't think you could just remove it and cry on him to make him a pink zombie since half of his being would be missing.
I think Pearl took a huge step in her recovery by releasing the truth even though her Diamond had said not to. I see a Single Pale Rose as way for Pink's final constraints over Pearl to be severed. Imagine the 6000 year weight that's been lifted off of her by telling the truth.
I feel like the reason Pearl gave her life away for Pink Diamond so much was because she doesn't want to risk Pink/Rose getting poofed which would end up revealing her gemstone to everyone.
I do not agree with pinks treatment towards Pearl, but Rebecca Sugar made some interesting comments on Pinks relationship with Pearl. We hear pink refer to pearl as "my Pearl." Sugar clarified that this is something that lower level gems use strictly for high level gems like the diamonds. Pink referring to Pearl as "my Pearl" is not a title of possession, but of respect.. Or perhaps intimacy? Whether or not Pink felt that way, or was just using that to manipulate, is debatable. But it's something to note about Pink/Rose's view and actions towards Pearl.
You could also relate it to the whole comrade aspect of the Soviet union. It's a title of respect to utilize "my" in addressing a gem. So if your goal is to create a more equal society why not break conventions and address lower class gems with such a term. Granted there is also the possibility that it was an inside joke, the same way my best friend and I refer to each other as wife for no other reason than our video game characters got married for that sweet exp bonus.

After seeing a single pale rose I really think that Rose should have chosen Pearl. After all they had been through, Pearl’s affection should have at least been recognized. I am quite proud that she is moving on though. #PearlxMysteryGirl
Rose loved Pearl. Just not in that way. Pearl might've loved her in a romantic sense, but Pink Diamond didn't have any obligation to return those feelings just because they've been through so much together. It doesn't help that Pearl never told Rose how she really felt about her since she was just happy to be by her side.
I feel like Pearl has been extremely manipulated by Rose Diamond, and I don't really think she's going to ever fully move on from either loving Rose or the shock of realizing everything that happened.
I don't think Rose manipulated her on purpose. She treated her Pearl as a close confidant, almost like an equal and wanted her to be free. However, as Rose apparently never set things straight in fear of hurting or failing to protect her, Pearl became even more obsessed with her former master.
Rose killed those around her with kindness. As loving and caring she might have been, she lacked the empathy to know how and when to talk to someone like a real person.
I don't think Rose/Pink Diamond realized Pearl had a thing for her - I've been guilty of being completely oblivious about a girl liking me and accidently leading them on too. She seemed to have that kind of clueless attitude in the episode.
Rose's relationship with Pearl could actually be similar to the relationship between Goku and Chichi who's despite being his wife Goku doesn't seem to love Chichi the way you would normally see how married couples love each other it felt more like Chichi was like a friend caring for her but not aware of how this kind of relationship work. It is pretty similar with Pink interacts with Pearl and Greg when they started dating until Greg stood and talk back to Rose in "we need to talk" which made her realize there is more to a relationship then just being with someone for awhile and saying the they love them I would like to see the show bring up this side of Pink and see how she reacted after the events in "we need to talk".

Oh without a doubt it's true that Goku was a lot better to Chichi than Pink Diamond was to pearl I was just saying I found the whole situation with Pink Diamond and relationships to be similar with Goku weather abridge series or not especially considering Rebecca Sugar does have a good amount Dragon ball references in the show I just thought of it as a possible reference but it was mainly because this was kind of the thought in my mind after seeing this video. I think more that Pink/Rose saw Pearl as her best and most likely first friend. I imagine when being given Pearl was the fist sign trust the other Diamonds shown her, making Pearl precious to her. Remember it seemed like in Jungle Moon Pink had nothing of her own. This wasn't one of her sisters pearls this was hers. As The Virtual Celebrity said in her Positive Pink Diamond Rant The other Diamonds only called their Pearls well Pearls and just gave them orders. Pink TALKED to Pearl, confided in her about her feelings, her plans, and most importantly her secrets. She was her Pearl and no one other Pearl could replace her. She didn't feel the same way as Pearl did toward her but she was her best friend; and would WANT her to move on and may even ship her and mystery girl. I can see it now when she first saw them together from inside Steven and she would say something like "You go Pearl!" or "You can do this you are my precious Pearl." But like said these are just my thoughts.
And also as a best friend that's there to help, guide, and be with Rose/Pink's side anytime. Also as a guardian figure kinda ironic with the "pearl servant Diamond" thing. I mean that's how I see their relationship and for me it's pretty hard thinking how Steven thinks about Pearl having romantic feelings with his mom. It's hard to know but also what makes this show so good. The unique relationships that the characters have which I am exposed to especially at a relatively young age really opened my eyes and thoughts that you can love anyone whatever their gender or what not. I'm very happy Steven Universe was part of my childhood 😊♥️

I feel like the vibe we get from mystery girl is that she wouldn't be upset that Pearl took so long to call or text her. She's probably just living her life and going with the flow. We see she is pretty independent, since she's going to all these shows alone. She probably doesn't feel the need to play cat and mouse and is just gonna pick up conversation with Pearl casually because she still intrigues her.
I always thought that Rose knew but she dind't let it go further because she cared too much for Pearl. As we see in Friendship, Pearl has self esteem issues and needs someone to lead her. Had Rose and her gotten together, she would never have developed independence. I think Rose always wanted her to one day go her own way, and when she died to become Steven she knew it would also help Pearl develop too.
In defense of Rose Diamond (yes I'm calling her that) she tried to talk Pearl away from the whole rebellion and Pearl still said she wanted to do this with her (Rose's scabbard)
I'm honestly not completely sure if she really had no clue since she offered pearl the chance to leave and return to homeworld befor she started the rebellion, but this offer could have also been meant from a friendship perspective, so I'm kinda torn appart here since the posibility of her really not knowing what kind of feallings pearl had is actually pretty big and just something I never thought to much about. How ever, I'm one hundret percent sure that Rose/Pink didn't intent to keep Pearl in a "Servent" possition. I hinestly think that Pearl put herselfe in that posittion to be closer to Rose than just a friend
Pink Diamond did not only see pearl as a pearl because, she said "my pearl" and if you look at previous episodes of yellow talking to her pearl she just calls her pearl. And Yellow pearl says "yes *my* diamond." *My* is used to someone who is seen as superior, so there must be something else going on in Pink's and pearl's relationship, besides the master/servant relationship.

I think Pink Diamond was just a manipulator, especially with Pearl. Sure, she knew that Pearls are made to love their Diamonds, but she also knew that her court followed her and that rebel Crystal Gems looked up to her. She manipulated everyone, using their loyalites and feelings, to get what she wanted, and that's that. Also, I don't believe saying this is demonizing her at all. I'm gonna be honest and say "been there, done that." The whole point to a mass manipulation like that is that no one can see the inside motivations and thoughts. So far, we've only seen her actions. The true "redeemer", or thing that makes it not demonizing to say that she did what she did and that it was cruel, is gonna be her really seeing how it didn't give her what she wanted. I mean, she freed herself from the Homeworld, and yet STILL felt like it wasn't enough of an escape. So she ended things by making Steven, hoping he likes and enjoys the fruit of her efforts more than she did. It could possibly have been motivated by guilt. There are tons of tidbits we see of her on Earth where she says, "Fuck, I don't know how to deal with emotions, and love... it's hard, but I want to try." That isn't (inheritlly) because she's a Gem. It's because when you emotionally manipulate others to this degree, you have to wipe out your conscience, and when you finish your goals, you are left with nothing. I think that is gonna be Pink Diamond's redeemer, and I hope to see it. It's a powerful story that deserves to be told. But that's just my opinion, of course.
Peridot and Pearl have always been my two favorite gems ( go figure the two brainy emotionally sensitive ones ) and I'm literally always rooting for them, I don't want to see Pearl get all spun out, I don't know that she needs a romantic relationship but she absolutely needs some validation, I hope it comes soon.

I relate most to Pearl because of the very reason in this video. My life has never required me to change. I've never been able to move on from my past relationships. Now I dont have a choice and Im trying to have the strength to face my independence with courage. I need to find me some people as a support network too...
I generally think that Pearl will be able to get over Rose/Pink Diamond, however I think that will be towards the end of the series or not. If that does not happen I think that maybe Pearl will come to terms with the fact that Rose is gone, but will still grieve. When looking at this, I hope she will be able to move on from Rose/Pink towards the end because I feel as though it would be wrong it have her come to terms with the fact of Rose's/Pink's death so quickly after the way her deep grieving feelings have been soon to be so strong. I agree with a lot of this video and honestly hope that Pearl can move on in the end. I feel like it would be a good route for the crewuniverse it go with her. ( Btw, I love your videos! Same! I don't think Pearl will be able to just move on completely since the scar left from Rose disappearing and her feelings for her are way too deep to just cover it up. But I hope that her addiction and passionate love can cease and she can find someone new, her grieve and sadness for Rose won't disappear that easily. I hope we can see her change before the end of the series since I really wanna see a couple more episodes of a "new" happy Pearl :)

Yes! It will be a rough time before she will be able to let go but she has already endured so much! She had to keep such a thing secret from all her friends and even her son, she was in love with her diamond and even as that bond ceased, Rose still didn't acknowledge her and fell for Greg and not her...then she disappeared and left Steven. My god Pearl is such a strong character, everyone else would've been crushed under this pressure. I hope at least one worry can be taken of her shoulders now and more to follow!
I like Rose/Pink Diamond. I think Pearl can learn to love someone else romantically. If Pink/Rose can learn to love, then Pearl can learn to love someone else. She is taking baby steps and is doing well.
This makes a lot of sense for Rose/Pink. She strikes me as someone who was self centered and shortsighted, but ultimately well-meaning... not the sort of person who would deliberately and knowingly choose to be cruel to Pearl. It also fits in with her assertion to Greg that gems do not naturally change or grow away from their purpose. The only gems she had contact with outside of herself after the Corruption attack were Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst. Any of Amethyst's differences from the norm could easily be dismissed because of her being 'overcooked'. And from what we know the dynamics between Garnet and 'Rose' & Pearl and 'Rose' were almost exactly the same thousands of years later as they were before the attack. To her eyes, Pearl had simply never stopped behaving 'like a Pearl', not understanding that Pearl's feelings towards her in the beginning were romantic in nature, not 'normal' Pearl devotion.
I DO HOPE that we get a date episode with Pearl!!! (along with some other date episodes for certain characters later on!)! According to Rebecca Sugar, Rose (or PD now) was not completely oblivious to Pearl's affections. I guess like Pearl told Greg in the episode "Mr. Greg," Rose/PD just fell in love with him (and I do think that love was genuine).

I think the reason pearl was able to talk about pink diamond was because only the person who put the mark on pearl can take it off and I guess Steven telling everyone it caused it to stop or something like it
To be honest i think the show is leading towards the whole Rainbow Quartz (Diamond actually) 2.0 thing. They gave Pearl and Steven a WHOLE NEW LAYER OF RELATIONSHIP. He's seeing her with different eyes now and I think she'll only move on from Rose when she associates her essence, her gem, to STEVEN. He's looking at Pearl in a much more empathic way, which is not difficult for Steven, but still, Pearl is "the logical one, the planner", and Steven knows she has her issues but it wasnt THAT MUCH connected to him before. Being able to love Steven without connecting this feeling to the servitude a Pearl would have towards her Diamond is one of Pearls biggest challenges and fusion would complete the cicle of letting go of the past (which is rose) to embrace Steven, the future.
I don't think romantic feelings per se existed at the time of "A Single Pale Rose". Back then, Pearl was still very much a Homeworld-programmed Pearl, and had to obey her Diamond's wish even if it was something as crazy as faking her own death. Romance could have developed later. But I don't see the flashback as a lover being coerced, but more as a servant being ordered to do something. Pearl's natural attachment to her owner (due to the very nature of being a Pearl) just evolved into something more as they spent more time together.
I just realised that Pearl purposely put herself before Rose/Pink Diamond because she didn’t want her to get poofed and for everyone to see that she was a diamond and that a pearl was keeping that a secret. A lot of people probably realised that already though, LOL.

That makes sense... if Pearl told Pink Diamond that she had romantic feelings for her, she probably wouldn't take it seriously. She might even laugh like she laughed at Greg when he tried to fuse with her. She's a *Pearl* , of course she loves her Diamond! I want to see her move past that and find someone else, she should learn to live without her Diamond somehow, because that weird servant/master relationship she was maintaining was not healthy.
Slice, this episode was amazing and renewed my interest in the plot of the show. I 100% hope you're right! Steven Universe is such a well-written show and your videos and those of others have really helped me to appreciate that. Your video editing has really improved since you first started here on TH-cam and helps keep me interested in my favorite cartoon during hiatuses. I hope to eventually write a research essay about it, (using TV tropes and John Trubys the anatomy of story as major references) and it's place in the pop culture of the present and why it attracted such a large adult audience. Your video is one I'll need to revisit(with credit of course) when I explain why the tragic romance subplot in this show is so compelling and why the writing is so damn good. Well, okay Rose might have not known and if she did she might have thought all pearls to do and feel the same way towards her Diamonds, I'd love to see mystery girl to have a change where we can actually tell there's a lot of differences in her and Rose. If Mystery girl didn't look so much like Rose and pearl still seemed to like her that would be a whole different story, but considering that what caught Pearl's attention was Mystery girl's pink hair I don't know.

I got a question. Does Stephen have a diamond form? When Rose morphed into pink diamond, her gem flipped into a dimond. It no longer looked like a rose quartz, so does that mean Steven has a diamond form? I honestly feel stupid asking this lol.
Fan Of Everything no pink diamond just shape shifted into rose, then once she was poofed she most likely just changed her appearance permanently. While her gem looks like it changed it actually didn't. I assume it looks different because of how light hits it at that angle.
krieger maria but what even are "diamond forms"? Diamonds don't all look the same, yellow, blue ,and pink all look totally different the only thing that makes them diamonds is their gem stone. Not only that ,but from the recent episode we know they can shape shift ,so who's to say they actually look like how they look now. No visual change could actually classify him as a diamond, so a diamond form makes no sense. Right now Steven is a diamond, and he has always been a diamond he just thought that he was a rose quartz, but that doesn't change that he's a diamond. In a sense we could say that he's already in his diamond form simply because he is a diamond.
Everyone is so mad about Rose/Pink choosing Greg over Pearl, but what if R/P didn’t really love Greg either??? Hear me out, Pink was shown to be this selfish little brat, even when she was with her sister diamonds. Who’s to say that ever REALLY changed? She creates this other gem to be, a Rose Quarts so she can experience life as a human, goes against the diamond authority, “shatters” herself, all so she can get what she wants; life on earth. She KNEW there would be consequences for everything she was doing. And she didn’t care. She wanted to experience life as a human SO BADLY, SHE BECAME ONE. Greg was a pawn to the end of this game she was playing. She knew she could control organic life, with enough experimentation she would realize she could carry and “birth” a baby. Sure she didn’t know what would really happen, but that was for later! She wanted to live, as a human, right then. And she would get what she wanted. And Greg or Pearl, Amethyst, Garnet, the diamonds all of them be damned. She was choosing HERSELF. OVER EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE ELSE.

Pearl should move on with someone who doesn't look like Mystery Girl. She looks too much like Rose and that's just gonna get in the way of her moving on......unless she dyes her hair or something. Also, Rose always cared about how others felt so if she was leading Pearl on the whole time I doubt it was ever on purpose. And even if it was, she knew she couldn't return those feelings since Rose likely wanted Pearl to become independent. Her getting together with Pearl for real would've been counterproductive since Pearl needs someone to lead her.

I really wanted Mystery Pearl to be a thing, Pearl SO needed it. It's too bad that the person who wrote that character no longer works for the show. Though I do agree that having her look like Rose wasn't maybe the most Healthy choice for Pearl but hay as far as "representation" goes, which this show is known for; playing out the story that, just jumping to a rebound replacement girl isn't the best idea and that's a lesson to be learned, replacing, isn't moving on. But, as you noted, Pearl isn't at a lack of phone numbers now that she knows how/what they are. Would be nice to see Pearl sort of going off and doing her own thing. I mean that's really what Rose wanted anyways. Was for the gems to break out of their molds, literally. And Pearl moving from servant to lover, wasn't really helping Pearl break that mold.

Rose/Pink never really seemed to be the best at understanding/recognizing emotions, even with Greg, so i honestly don't think she knew Pearl's feelings towards her were /romantic/. She had to know Pearl felt strongly for her, but maybe Rose/Pink thought it was more admiration or her devotion as a pearl. And even if she did have an idea that Pearl felt that way about her, it's not like she saw anything she did with humans as romantic, until wayyyy later with Greg.
I think a bigger possibility is Rose did reciprocate Pearls love, that it was the relationship between Pearl and Rose was a factor in her wanting to give up her Diamond status. I also think that Rose is Polygamous and in general did what she wanted. I don't thinks it's fair to demonize Pearl and Rose's relationship just because we have this new info. Pearl says herself 'she made me feel like I was everything' that sounds like genuwine love to me.

I think Rose Quartz knew that Pearl had feelings for her, but she knew that Pearl was programmed to obey and love her as a diamond. So Rose decided that if she created a romantic relationship with Pearl, it wouldn't be completely genuine. Even if it was, Rose probably never had the guts to ask Pearl.
I honestly think Pearl should get into a relationship because she has NEVER had to handle mutual love and respect. I think it would be hard for her to understand that love doesn't equal undying devotion. Love isn't about giving everything you have until you crumble. Love is not servitude. Idk. It would be cool to see her struggle with this and grow from a relationship.
Really great video! This got me thinking more deeply about gem status and purpose. It’s mentioned several times in the series, gems start programmed for their specific purpose. What sticks out now knowing that Rose is Pink Diamond is that she actually never changed her born role. (Especially when Rose talks about this directly in Greg the babysitter). As a diamond she was an absolute leader of gems and as the rebellions leader her followers severed her even in the face of certain loss. Did the gems subconsciously submit to her? And what does this mean for Steven - dose he have a born purpose to lead too? In a darker sense, it poses the question if the rest of the gems can ever break free of their roles. All of the characters have grown in terms of personality, and abilities, but are they truly altering their original purposes?
The only thing shattered here was Pearl's heart :'(

I am *dying* to see Pearl and Rose meet for the first time and an episode dedicated to showing us how their relationship formed. For all we know, Rose maybe was totally leading her on- or Rose was maybe naive being (young?) and didn't realise Pearl was falling *hard* for her.
I don't believe for a second that Pearl initiated anything- she was probably really by the book and strictly followed the rules before Rose. So I want to see how Rose managed to convince a high status Pearl that Earth was the bomb and worth starting a war over...

Am I the only one who thinks Pearl would be doing herself a favor if she didn't get into any other romantic type of relationships? Pearl has been alongside Pink/Rose for literally 6000 years or so. Everything Pearl has ever done was for Pink. Not only did she simply adore her Diamond because she's her Pearl and she's supposed to do that, she felt an overwhelming amount of romantic feelings for her which were never really returned. And then Greg and Steven happened. It's only been 14 years which is nothing in a Gem's life. That must feel like a week or two to a human.
Since Pink is gone and Pearl has been "single", she's been making sooo much progress moving on from Pink. Sure she still breaks down and cries whole rivers worth of tears every now and then, but she's been slowly detaching her from Pink, getting over her, moving on from her. Now that Pink is gone, Pearl can re-invent herself. Do things, get new interests, hobbies and contacts, making her own decisions without ever HAVING to think about Pink. But Pink is still engraved in her memory. Of course, how can she not be?
Now how would happen if Pearl got into a relationship (with the love returned this time), especially with Mystery Girl/Sabina who bears so much resemblance to Rose? She would give it her all but it wouldn't feel like it did with Pink so that would break her and she'd feel awful. Or, since Sabina looks so much like Rose, Pearl starts to absolutely DEVOTE herself to Sabina like she did with Pink and it would scare her off and break Pearl's heart. Many other possibilities here, but one way or another, Pearl would be too occupied with her new relationship and the mindset that comes with it to continue this tremendous growth she's gone through.
Like, let's be real here, what good outcome could a new relationship have for Pearl with her history and all? And the fact that she's a Gem to begin with? I can't see Pearl having a Totally Normal and Healthy Relationship™ that brings her joy and happiness and fulfilment and what have you. Not with the history she has with Pink. Or the fact that she's a Gem so Sabina would die far before she would and Pearl would have her heart broken again. I think if she'd just keep focusing on herself, she'll eventually be way happier.

In the other hand, I think Steven loves and cares for Pearl (in a non romantic way, but in a "Mother-Son" way) and apreciates her more than PD/Rose ever did.
I think that the deciding factor would be Rose's feelings. Pearl didn't try to take her gem out of baby Steven even though it was hard for her, because she knew that is what Rose wanted, however if she knew Rose wanted to return and it had to be her or Steven I could see her feeling guilty but trying to justify it in all sorts of ways. Can't see the others letting her do that though, especially after the big reveal.
How about Pearl takes the Gem out of Steven and let Rose reform and use some healing tears like Steven did on Lars and BOOM! Everybody gets to live together forever (except Greg)

I think Pearl took a huge step in her recovery by releasing the truth even though her Diamond had said not to. I see a Single Pale Rose as way for Pink's final constraints over Pearl to be severed. Imagine the 6000 year weight that's been lifted off of her by telling the truth.

I do not agree with pinks treatment towards Pearl, but Rebecca Sugar made some interesting comments on Pinks relationship with Pearl. We hear pink refer to pearl as "my Pearl." Sugar clarified that this is something that lower level gems use strictly for high level gems like the diamonds. Pink referring to Pearl as "my Pearl" is not a title of possession, but of respect.. Or perhaps intimacy? Whether or not Pink felt that way, or was just using that to manipulate, is debatable. But it's something to note about Pink/Rose's view and actions towards Pearl.

So if your goal is to create a more equal society why not break conventions and address lower class gems with such a term. Granted there is also the possibility that it was an inside joke, the same way my best friend and I refer to each other as wife for no other reason than our video game characters got married for that sweet exp bonus.

I don't think Rose/Pink Diamond realized Pearl had a thing for her - I've been guilty of being completely oblivious about a girl liking me and accidently leading them on too. She seemed to have that kind of clueless attitude in the episode.
Rose's relationship with Pearl could actually be similar to the relationship between Goku and Chichi who's despite being his wife Goku doesn't seem to love Chichi the way you would normally see how married couples love each other it felt more like Chichi was like a friend caring for her but not aware of how this kind of relationship work. It is pretty similar with Pink interacts with Pearl and Greg when they started dating until Greg stood and talk back to Rose in "we need to talk" which made her realize there is more to a relationship then just being with someone for awhile and saying the they love them I would like to see the show bring up this side of Pink and see how she reacted after the events in "we need to talk".

I think more that Pink/Rose saw Pearl as her best and most likely first friend. I imagine when being given Pearl was the fist sign trust the other Diamonds shown her, making Pearl precious to her. Remember it seemed like in Jungle Moon Pink had nothing of her own. This wasn't one of her sisters pearls this was hers. As The Virtual Celebrity said in her Positive Pink Diamond Rant The other Diamonds only called their Pearls well Pearls and just gave them orders. Pink TALKED to Pearl, confided in her about her feelings, her plans, and most importantly her secrets. She was her Pearl and no one other Pearl could replace her. She didn't feel the same way as Pearl did toward her but she was her best friend; and would WANT her to move on and may even ship her and mystery girl. I can see it now when she first saw them together from inside Steven and she would say something like "You go Pearl!" or "You can do this you are my precious Pearl." But like said these are just my thoughts.

I feel like the vibe we get from mystery girl is that she wouldn't be upset that Pearl took so long to call or text her. She's probably just living her life and going with the flow. We see she is pretty independent, since she's going to all these shows alone. She probably doesn't feel the need to play cat and mouse and is just gonna pick up conversation with Pearl casually because she still intrigues her.
I always thought that Rose knew but she dind't let it go further because she cared too much for Pearl. As we see in Friendship, Pearl has self esteem issues and needs someone to lead her. Had Rose and her gotten together, she would never have developed independence. I think Rose always wanted her to one day go her own way, and when she died to become Steven she knew it would also help Pearl develop too.

I'm honestly not completely sure if she really had no clue since she offered pearl the chance to leave and return to homeworld befor she started the rebellion, but this offer could have also been meant from a friendship perspective, so I'm kinda torn appart here since the posibility of her really not knowing what kind of feallings pearl had is actually pretty big and just something I never thought to much about. How ever, I'm one hundret percent sure that Rose/Pink didn't intent to keep Pearl in a "Servent" possition. I hinestly think that Pearl put herselfe in that posittion to be closer to Rose than just a friend

And Yellow pearl says "yes *my* diamond." *My* is used to someone who is seen as superior, so there must be something else going on in Pink's and pearl's relationship, besides the master/servant relationship.
Also, we have at least one example of giving Pearl a chance to runaway from the fight. So, it isn't like Pink was forcing her to do things.

I think Pink Diamond was just a manipulator, especially with Pearl. Sure, she knew that Pearls are made to love their Diamonds, but she also knew that her court followed her and that rebel Crystal Gems looked up to her. She manipulated everyone, using their loyalites and feelings, to get what she wanted, and that's that. Also, I don't believe saying this is demonizing her at all. I'm gonna be honest and say "been there, done that." The whole point to a mass manipulation like that is that no one can see the inside motivations and thoughts. So far, we've only seen her actions. The true "redeemer", or thing that makes it not demonizing to say that she did what she did and that it was cruel, is gonna be her really seeing how it didn't give her what she wanted. I mean, she freed herself from the Homeworld, and yet STILL felt like it wasn't enough of an escape. So she ended things by making Steven, hoping he likes and enjoys the fruit of her efforts more than she did. It could possibly have been motivated by guilt. There are tons of tidbits we see of her on Earth where she says, "Fuck, I don't know how to deal with emotions, and love... it's hard, but I want to try." That isn't (inheritlly) because she's a Gem. It's because when you emotionally manipulate others to this degree, you have to wipe out your conscience, and when you finish your goals, you are left with nothing. I think that is gonna be Pink Diamond's redeemer, and I hope to see it. It's a powerful story that deserves to be told. But that's just my opinion, of course.
Peridot and Pearl have always been my two favorite gems ( go figure the two brainy emotionally sensitive ones ) and I'm literally always rooting for them, I don't want to see Pearl get all spun out, I don't know that she needs a romantic relationship but she absolutely needs some validation, I hope it comes soon.

I generally think that Pearl will be able to get over Rose/Pink Diamond, however I think that will be towards the end of the series or not. If that does not happen I think that maybe Pearl will come to terms with the fact that Rose is gone, but will still grieve. When looking at this, I hope she will be able to move on from Rose/Pink towards the end because I feel as though it would be wrong it have her come to terms with the fact of Rose's/Pink's death so quickly after the way her deep grieving feelings have been soon to be so strong. I agree with a lot of this video and honestly hope that Pearl can move on in the end. I feel like it would be a good route for the crewuniverse it go with her.

Yes! It will be a rough time before she will be able to let go but she has already endured so much! She had to keep such a thing secret from all her friends and even her son, she was in love with her diamond and even as that bond ceased, Rose still didn't acknowledge her and fell for Greg and not her...then she disappeared and left Steven.
My god Pearl is such a strong character, everyone else would've been crushed under this pressure.

I like Rose/Pink Diamond. I think Pearl can learn to love someone else romantically. If Pink/Rose can learn to love, then Pearl can learn to love someone else. She is taking baby steps and is doing well.
This makes a lot of sense for Rose/Pink. She strikes me as someone who was self centered and shortsighted, but ultimately well-meaning... not the sort of person who would deliberately and knowingly choose to be cruel to Pearl. It also fits in with her assertion to Greg that gems do not naturally change or grow away from their purpose. The only gems she had contact with outside of herself after the Corruption attack were Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst. Any of Amethyst's differences from the norm could easily be dismissed because of her being 'overcooked'. And from what we know the dynamics between Garnet and 'Rose' & Pearl and 'Rose' were almost exactly the same thousands of years later as they were before the attack. According to Rebecca Sugar, Rose (or PD now) was not completely oblivious to Pearl's affections. I guess like Pearl told Greg in the episode "Mr. Greg," Rose/PD just fell in love with him (and I do think that love was genuine).

To be honest i think the show is leading towards the whole Rainbow Quartz (Diamond actually) 2.0 thing. They gave Pearl and Steven a WHOLE NEW LAYER OF RELATIONSHIP. He's seeing her with different eyes now and I think she'll only move on from Rose when she associates her essence, her gem, to STEVEN. He's looking at Pearl in a much more empathic way, which is not difficult for Steven, but still, Pearl is "the logical one, the planner", and Steven knows she has her issues but it wasnt THAT MUCH connected to him before. Being able to love Steven without connecting this feeling to the servitude a Pearl would have towards her Diamond is one of Pearls biggest challenges and fusion would complete the cicle of letting go of the past (which is rose) to embrace Steven, the future.

I don't think romantic feelings per se existed at the time of "A Single Pale Rose". Back then, Pearl was still very much a Homeworld-programmed Pearl, and had to obey her Diamond's wish even if it was something as crazy as faking her own death. Romance could have developed later. But I don't see the flashback as a lover being coerced, but more as a servant being ordered to do something. Pearl's natural attachment to her owner (due to the very nature of being a Pearl) just evolved into something more as they spent more time together.
I just realised that Pearl purposely put herself before Rose/Pink Diamond because she didn’t want her to get poofed and for everyone to see that she was a diamond and that a pearl was keeping that a secret. A lot of people probably realised that already though, LOL.
I know this is a bit off topic, but you know how rose/pink diamond said that she could not save the corrupted gems what if she didn't try for some unknown reason

Slice, this episode was amazing and renewed my interest in the plot of the show. I 100% hope you're right! Steven Universe is such a well-written show and your videos and those of others have really helped me to appreciate that. Your video editing has really improved since you first started here on TH-cam and helps keep me interested in my favorite cartoon during hiatuses. I hope to eventually write a research essay about it, (using TV tropes and John Trubys the anatomy of story as major references) and it's place in the pop culture of the present and why it attracted such a large adult audience. Your video is one I'll need to revisit(with credit of course) when I explain why the tragic romance subplot in this show is so compelling and why the writing is so damn good. If Mystery girl didn't look so much like Rose and pearl still seemed to like her that would be a whole different story, but considering that what caught Pearl's attention was Mystery girl's pink hair I don't know.

krieger maria but what even are "diamond forms"? Diamonds don't all look the same, yellow, blue ,and pink all look totally different the only thing that makes them diamonds is their gem stone. Not only that ,but from the recent episode we know they can shape shift ,so who's to say they actually look like how they look now. No visual change could actually classify him as a diamond, so a diamond form makes no sense. Right now Steven is a diamond, and he has always been a diamond he just thought that he was a rose quartz, but that doesn't change that he's a diamond. In a sense we could say that he's already in his diamond form simply because he is a diamond.

Hear me out, Pink was shown to be this selfish little brat, even when she was with her sister diamonds. Who’s to say that ever REALLY changed?
She creates this other gem to be, a Rose Quarts so she can experience life as a human, goes against the diamond authority, “shatters” herself, all so she can get what she wants; life on earth. She KNEW there would be consequences for everything she was doing. And she didn’t care.
She wanted to experience life as a human SO BADLY, SHE BECAME ONE. Greg was a pawn to the end of this game she was playing.
She knew she could control organic life, with enough experimentation she would realize she could carry and “birth” a baby.
Sure she didn’t know what would really happen, but that was for later! She wanted to live, as a human, right then. And she would get what she wanted.

Pearl should move on with someone who doesn't look like Mystery Girl. She looks too much like Rose and that's just gonna get in the way of her moving on......unless she dyes her hair or something. Also, Rose always cared about how others felt so if she was leading Pearl on the whole time I doubt it was ever on purpose. And even if it was, she knew she couldn't return those feelings since Rose likely wanted Pearl to become independent. Her getting together with Pearl for real would've been counterproductive since Pearl needs someone to lead her.

I really wanted Mystery Pearl to be a thing, Pearl SO needed it. It's too bad that the person who wrote that character no longer works for the show. Though I do agree that having her look like Rose wasn't maybe the most Healthy choice for Pearl but hay as far as "representation" goes, which this show is known for; playing out the story that, just jumping to a rebound replacement girl isn't the best idea and that's a lesson to be learned, replacing, isn't moving on.
But, as you noted, Pearl isn't at a lack of phone numbers now that she knows how/what they are. Would be nice to see Pearl sort of going off and doing her own thing. I mean that's really what Rose wanted anyways. Was for the gems to break out of their molds, literally. And Pearl moving from servant to lover, wasn't really helping Pearl break that mold.

Just like how Rose was unable to recognize Greg's deeper feelings, I think she was also oblivious to Pearl's. The difference is Greg made a move on her, and Pearl never did. I feel bad for Pearl, I hope she'll be able to move on now.

Rose/Pink never really seemed to be the best at understanding/recognizing emotions, even with Greg, so i honestly don't think she knew Pearl's feelings towards her were /romantic/. She had to know Pearl felt strongly for her, but maybe Rose/Pink thought it was more admiration or her devotion as a pearl. And even if she did have an idea that Pearl felt that way about her, it's not like she saw anything she did with humans as romantic, until wayyyy later with Greg.

I also think that Rose is Polygamous and in general did what she wanted. I don't thinks it's fair to demonize Pearl and Rose's relationship just because we have this new info. Pearl says herself 'she made me feel like I was everything' that sounds like genuwine love to me.

They were together a very very very long time. It's rough. I'm not sure Pearl will ever fully move on, but if she does it would be great to see.
In an interview made about two days ago, Rebecca says that the "My (enter gem name here)" is meant xonly for superior gems (i.e. "My Diamond"). She also notes that Rose calling Pearl "My Pearl" is significant in that regard.

I think Rose Quartz knew that Pearl had feelings for her, but she knew that Pearl was programmed to obey and love her as a diamond. So Rose decided that if she created a romantic relationship with Pearl, it wouldn't be completely genuine. Even if it was, Rose probably never had the guts to ask Pearl.

I think it would be hard for her to understand that love doesn't equal undying devotion. Love isn't about giving everything you have until you crumble. Love is not servitude. Idk. Really great video! This got me thinking more deeply about gem status and purpose. It’s mentioned several times in the series, gems start programmed for their specific purpose. What sticks out now knowing that Rose is Pink Diamond is that she actually never changed her born role. (Especially when Rose talks about this directly in Greg the babysitter). As a diamond she was an absolute leader of gems and as the rebellions leader her followers severed her even in the face of certain loss. Did the gems subconsciously submit to her? And what does this mean for Steven - dose he have a born purpose to lead too? In a darker sense, it poses the question if the rest of the gems can ever break free of their roles. All of the characters have grown in terms of personality, and abilities, but are they truly altering their original purposes?
