The clue that Rin had died was not only she was not in the show or village but when Kakashi died in the fight with Pain, he saw his team (Minato, Rin, Obito) before seeing his dad. He said he'll go see them now; we know that Obito and Minato had died from the story, and OG Naruto, so the logical implication is that she had died some time ago too.

Ron's hesitation to acknowledge the reason for Obito's fall is understandable. He pulled the strings of the world's worst terrorist organization, collected the tailed beasts, murdered countless people, waged a war against all the 5 Great Nations, and now desires to put the entire world under an illusion--all because of a childhood crush who didn't even seem to think much of him. He does appear to be a bitter simp. But the truth is quite deeper. Madara had to have used Rin's death as a starting point in corrupting and manipulating Obito. A very important thing that I should probably explain is that kakashi never asked, "Why did you start the war?" Kakashi asked, "If you were alive, why not come forward?" Basicaly he asked him why didn't you come back. Obito's motives haven't been fleshed out yet and his reason for this war has yet to be explained properly. But I loved your reaction!
What really got me believing Tobi was Obito even though I was sure he died when watching episode 129-130 is when Kakashi mentioned his “Teleportation Technique” was linked to the same space as his Kamui. That got me thinking about the times Obito used the technique and how it looked similar to Kakashi’s Kamui and was thinking “Oh damn…” Next episode later they showed the right eye Mangekyo and I was sure of Tobi’s identity.
I give credit to Ron for this one. That episode a while back where Michelle was throwing out baseless claims on why it could be Obito was a bit suspicious and she kept on it without providing any evidence to back it up. You can't claim that if you're just naming people for the hell of it. At least the Shisui theory they had going on made some sense for where they were at in the show at the time...

I think she definitely either watched the show before or she googled Naruto Shippuden and read spoilers because tbh, she called way too many plot twists in the past and not once was she wrong. Especially when it comes to Itachi, she always was saying stuff like "No way is he truly evil. Oh he cares for Sasuke. Oh there is more to his story I don't think he is evil". To be fair, many of Naruto Shippuden fans also speculated a lot when it came to Itachi and his true motivations and I was one of those people too but, never once did I think "Itachi is definitely NOT evil. Yeah sure he slaughtered his entire clan, murdered his own parents and basically destroyed Sasuke's life but he is definitely NOT evil" when the manga was still being released originally. I thought that Itachi was really a true Villain but a very different type of a villain compared to Orochimaru. I thought that he was a true Sociopath who basically lacked normal human emotions such as sympathy and empathy and that he was after some ultimate Uchiha power or that he had some twisted goal he wanted to achieve. But yeah I think she definitely knew a lot of stuff about this anime long before they started reacting to Shippuden.

people were already theorizing that Obito was Tobi/Madara back when the manga was ongoing. they were even hoping that it was someone else other than Obito because that would be a very obvious twist. i think the one-eyed orange mask made it obvious (because of the Sharingan placement.) i was more salty when i got spoiled about Jiraiya's death lmao that shit pissed me off for weeks
Kakashi does say both obito & rins names when visiting the war memorial back in part 1 + we never see rin ... so most people assumed she died ...but that is an obscure ref & easy to forget we get the full story in the next few eps
Regarding what happened to Rin, after Kakashi Gaiden there is no further mention of her until then, but based on Kakashi's background, the fanbase deduced that she would be dead even before it was revealed that Obito was Tobi. In the introductory episode of Kakashi when he does the bell test with them, the memorial stone is in the scene and he says that all the people important to him are already dead. When we see Kakashi Gaiden, it is already assumed that everyone would be dead in the present. I think it was smart that the anime did not have Kakashi Gaiden at the beginning of Shippuden because it would have given it too much prominence, putting it in the middle of the anime at least was a way to mislead people who only watched the anime. For those who followed the manga weekly, the theory of Tobi being Obito has always been very strong since the character's introduction, even before he claimed to be Uchiha Madara, and there has never been another option as popular (Shisui must have been the second most theorized, but this theory had much less strength).

Michelle did have a feeling of who Tobi was before episode 342, but most reactors I’ve seen have never come to the conclusion until episode 342, and some just flat-out think that Tobi stole Obito’s right eye. So I would like to defend the mystery of Tobi and say that maybe it’s not so obvious after all. And I think a genius thing Kishimoto did for Tobi was change his design during the Great Ninja War arc. Great Ninja War Tobi, with the Rinnegan and two-eyed mask that also covers his hair, must have distracted the audiences from figuring out the mystery way before it’s revealed. I guarantee that way more reactors would’ve solved the mystery if Tobi continued wearing the one-eyed orange mask that exposed his hair during the Great Ninja War arc.
It's funny cause every manga reader assumed Tobi was Obito until he announced that he was actually Madara, at which point all the Tobito theories died. But turns out they were correct all along, we just had to wait years to get the confirmation.

Rin's death not being explained was the reason I was confident that Pain didnt actually manage to kill Kakashi. The longer that story remained un-explained, the more importance it must have to the main plot. That was one of the main hints. The Shisui theory they had going on for a while was a legitimately good claim for what episodes they were on and such. Growing up watching Naruto, I always was under the assumption Tobi was ALWAYS Obito bc of the letters in the name somewhat close in similarity and we were eventually going to get a background story to the friendship.

"How did they communicate that" (Naruto and Kakashi working together to transport the shadow clone to destroy the mask) when Naruto and Sasuke fight in OG Naruto at the end. Sasuke mentions that when you become strong shinobi, not a single word needs to be said amongst each other as they will simply understand each other as they fight. They dont mention this to be the answer, but i thought of this now as I've been watching other reactions, and I just watched that scene and remembered it, and it applies.

I've read the manga and watched the anime as well. When THIS CHAPTER came on it, my heart hurt so bad and I just couldn't feel anything but a strange pain. Obito's flashback was in a different chapter than the mask being destroyed by Naruto's Rasengan. The first image was the flashback. I was heartbroken. And the picture of his classe is cool, because every known jönin is in there. Asuma, Kurenai, Ebisu (Konohamaru's mentor), Gai, Hayate (chuunin examinator guy who was killed by Gaara's mentor), Genma (second chuunin examinator) and a few others.
I feel like Michelle could've just been honest from the start of this journey and say how much she actually knows it wouldnt have made the reactions any less enjoyable if there is still one blind reactor involved. Many reaction channels do this and it's fine, but this whole facade of OH MY GOD I guessed it EXACTLY right every single time schtick has worn off.

As you watch a lot of anime, you realized it quickly because you're familiar with anime, In 2007, the eps were released once a week, so you forgot about the characters, that's why it worked at the time

The actual "break" people gave Obito was that Rin's death was merely the catalyst for his "awakening to reality." He understood that her sacrifice was justified given the circumstances, and it was the best he could have hoped for in reality. If, in the real world, even the best possible outcome requires the destruction of everything he ever cared about, then there is no hope or meaning in the real world. As a result when this episode dropped (especially the chapter for it) a lot of people's initial reaction to Obito's stated motive was more or less _"...but you and Rin don't have shit?"_ And some people (at least manga readers keeping up with the manga then) attributed this motive for Obito (remember: (1) this is supposed to a huge reveal, what's going to be cause narratively speaking; (2) we don't know what Obito and Rin have going on at this point in the story) to Kishimoto's burnout and increasing interest in what would later become Samurai 8. The "break" in your reply isn't a thing yet as the audience doesn't know. Obito's "You let Rin die!" opens a mystery for us viewers to learn where his headspace is, but does not yet lead to any real impact in way of investment towards Obitio's motive.

And Obito didn't start the way over Rin. He started the war after realizing the cruel reality of the world. There was another influence though which I won't spoil you on. But I suppose you could say Rin had a minor influence on Obito, but again it wasn't the sole reason Obito started war over.

The issue is michelle has read the manga and claims she watched this years ago but only up to before asuma died (when the series as we know picks up from there). The clue that Rin had died was not only she was not in the show or village but when Kakashi died in the fight with Pain, he saw his team (Minato, Rin, Obito) before seeing his dad. He said he'll go see them now; we know that Obito and Minato had died from the story, and OG Naruto, so the logical implication is that she had died some time ago too.
Also when kakashi is reprimanding sasuke before he leaves the village and sasuke says kakashi doesn't know what it feels like to lose everyone close to him kakashi also mentions that he already lost everyone

Ron's hesitation to acknowledge the reason for Obito's fall is understandable. He pulled the strings of the world's worst terrorist organization, collected the tailed beasts, murdered countless people, waged a war against all the 5 Great Nations, and now desires to put the entire world under an illusion--all because of a childhood crush who didn't even seem to think much of him. He does appear to be a bitter simp.
But the truth is quite deeper. Madara had to have used Rin's death as a starting point in corrupting and manipulating Obito. And, as usual, there has to be some underlying theme or philosophy here. I'm glad I was old and charitable enough to discern and appreciate these things as the story happened.

A very important thing that I should probably explain is that kakashi never asked, "Why did you start the war?" Kakashi asked, "If you were alive, why not come forward?" Basicaly he asked him why didn't you come back. Obito's motives haven't been fleshed out yet and his reason for this war has yet to be explained properly. But I loved your reaction!
What really got me believing Tobi was Obito even though I was sure he died when watching episode 129-130 is when Kakashi mentioned his “Teleportation Technique” was linked to the same space as his Kamui. That got me thinking about the times Obito used the technique and how it looked similar to Kakashi’s Kamui and was thinking “Oh damn…” Next episode later they showed the right eye Mangekyo and I was sure of Tobi’s identity.
I give credit to Ron for this one. That episode a while back where Michelle was throwing out baseless claims on why it could be Obito was a bit suspicious and she kept on it without providing any evidence to back it up. You can't claim that if you're just naming people for the hell of it. At least the Shisui theory they had going on made some sense for where they were at in the show at the time...

I think she definitely either watched the show before or she googled Naruto Shippuden and read spoilers because tbh, she called way too many plot twists in the past and not once was she wrong. Especially when it comes to Itachi, she always was saying stuff like "No way is he truly evil. Oh he cares for Sasuke. Oh there is more to his story I don't think he is evil".
To be fair, many of Naruto Shippuden fans also speculated a lot when it came to Itachi and his true motivations and I was one of those people too but, never once did I think "Itachi is definitely NOT evil. Yeah sure he slaughtered his entire clan, murdered his own parents and basically destroyed Sasuke's life but he is definitely NOT evil" when the manga was still being released originally. I thought that Itachi was really a true Villain but a very different type of a villain compared to Orochimaru. I thought that he was a true Sociopath who basically lacked normal human emotions such as sympathy and empathy and that he was after some ultimate Uchiha power or that he had some twisted goal he wanted to achieve. But yeah I think she definitely knew a lot of stuff about this anime long before they started reacting to Shippuden.

Kakashi does say both obito & rins names when visiting the war memorial back in part 1 + we never see rin ... so most people assumed she died ...but that is an obscure ref & easy to forget

Regarding what happened to Rin, after Kakashi Gaiden there is no further mention of her until then, but based on Kakashi's background, the fanbase deduced that she would be dead even before it was revealed that Obito was Tobi. In the introductory episode of Kakashi when he does the bell test with them, the memorial stone is in the scene and he says that all the people important to him are already dead. When we see Kakashi Gaiden, it is already assumed that everyone would be dead in the present. I think it was smart that the anime did not have Kakashi Gaiden at the beginning of Shippuden because it would have given it too much prominence, putting it in the middle of the anime at least was a way to mislead people who only watched the anime. For those who followed the manga weekly, the theory of Tobi being Obito has always been very strong since the character's introduction, even before he claimed to be Uchiha Madara, and there has never been another option as popular (Shisui must have been the second most theorized, but this theory had much less strength).

So I would like to defend the mystery of Tobi and say that maybe it’s not so obvious after all. And I think a genius thing Kishimoto did for Tobi was change his design during the Great Ninja War arc. Great Ninja War Tobi, with the Rinnegan and two-eyed mask that also covers his hair, must have distracted the audiences from figuring out the mystery way before it’s revealed. I guarantee that way more reactors would’ve solved the mystery if Tobi continued wearing the one-eyed orange mask that exposed his hair during the Great Ninja War arc.

Rin's death not being explained was the reason I was confident that Pain didnt actually manage to kill Kakashi. The longer that story remained un-explained, the more importance it must have to the main plot. That was one of the main hints.

Growing up watching Naruto, I always was under the assumption Tobi was ALWAYS Obito bc of the letters in the name somewhat close in similarity and we were eventually going to get a background story to the friendship.

Sasuke mentions that when you become strong shinobi, not a single word needs to be said amongst each other as they will simply understand each other as they fight. They dont mention this to be the answer, but i thought of this now as I've been watching other reactions, and I just watched that scene and remembered it, and it applies.

I've read the manga and watched the anime as well. When THIS CHAPTER came on it, my heart hurt so bad and I just couldn't feel anything but a strange pain. Obito's flashback was in a different chapter than the mask being destroyed by Naruto's Rasengan.
The first image was the flashback. I was heartbroken.
And the picture of his classe is cool, because every known jönin is in there.

I feel like Michelle could've just been honest from the start of this journey and say how much she actually knows it wouldnt have made the reactions any less enjoyable if there is still one blind reactor involved. I don't think she is lying. She didn't really call out obito being tobi before, she's just making it up now. I watched every episode of shippuuden reaction of theirs, she didn't really claim he was obito. She threw every uchiha name around throughout the show and obito happened to be one of them. She is just now saying she guessed it correct but nah, she thought it was Shisui for a longer time.

@@gquanda just try sometimes watch anime with somenone and discuss about it most of time. I had it very the same way like they have with this show. I predicted many things which they did too, because I was overthinking about many things and they are most of time obvious. But when I watch anime alone and I just watch, without talking about it with someone, I almost always miss everything :D but for me it is more fun, because when I am not thinking about what can happen next, I am then more surprised :D

The only break I remember people giving Obito for this motive was that his writer (Kishimoto) was writing on a weekly basis and had to essentially churn chapters quickly given his/Shonen Jump's intense schedule as it were then (there was an interview Kishimoto did around this time when he was more or less burned out from Naruto and was looking to work out something else, which later become a sci-fi manga of his called Samurai 8 that might explain these choices in his writing).

He understood that her sacrifice was justified given the circumstances, and it was the best he could have hoped for in reality. If, in the real world, even the best possible outcome requires the destruction of everything he ever cared about, then there is no hope or meaning in the real world. If that wasn't convincing enough, practically all of Madara's own history of hopelessness was downloaded to his brain, causing him to project his sense of hopelessness to the very history of the world.
The contrast between the lack of hope in the real world and the promise of the Infinite Tsukuyomi--that is his motivation. Rin's death was merely the first step.

We, the audience, only learned that Kakashi let Rin die; but this "revelation" does pretty much nothing for most viewers because we have no investment to whatever Obito and Rin had going on because the show thus far hasn't presented anything to us _about_ them except for them being teammates. So, no investment, no impact.
When Kishimoto was writing this episode, and Naruto in general, he had to churn chapters out on a weekly basis save for golden weeks and holidays. As a result when this episode dropped (especially the chapter for it) a lot of people's initial reaction to Obito's stated motive was more or less _"...but you and Rin don't have shit?"_ And some people (at least manga readers keeping up with the manga then) attributed this motive for Obito (remember: (1) this is supposed to a huge reveal, what's going to be cause narratively speaking; (2) we don't know what Obito and Rin have going on at this point in the story) to Kishimoto's burnout and increasing interest in what would later become Samurai 8.
The "break" in your reply isn't a thing yet as the audience doesn't know. Obito's "You let Rin die!" opens a mystery for us viewers to learn where his headspace is, but does not yet lead to any real impact in way of investment towards Obitio's motive.

And Obito didn't start the way over Rin. He started the war after realizing the cruel reality of the world. There was another influence though which I won't spoil you on. But I suppose you could say Rin had a minor influence on Obito, but again it wasn't the sole reason Obito started war over.

So glad someone else said it. Been thinking this through the whole series. Even the og season but i stayed silent because i didn’t want to hate on them unnecessarily. The issue is michelle has read the manga and claims she watched this years ago but only up to before asuma died (when the series as we know picks up from there). So yeah didn’t believe her but i have to be honest, im sure the guy doesn’t mind but it’s annoying how she pretends to ‘predict’ things just before it happens and this is the guys first time watching naruto.

One of those times when I called it Tobi was Obito. The first time we discovered Tobi was an Uchiha was around the same time we get the Kakashi back story of getting his Sharingan, we only see a right eye for the longest time, and Tobi's teleportation when his body swirls away & every thing he touches swirls away just like Kakashi's Mangeyko sharingan.
