What Made Batman Arkham City One Hell of a Game?

- The Arkham series is one that can make a claim that very few other series can- it's got four mainline title, and every one of them is - at the very least - a great game. And while both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City can arguably stake their claim to the throne of best Batman game of all time, the one we're concerned with here, in this feature, is Arkham City.
Taking the formula of what made Arkham Asylum so good and expanding upon it in every way possible surely would have been no easy task. When developers get things as spectacularly right as Rocksteady did with Arkham Asylum, it's hard to make a sequel that manages to be even better, but with Arkham City, that is exactly what Rocksteady Studios did.

Excellent story writing, fun and varied combat & bosses. Stealth was fun and made you feel like a terror inducing vigilante as the enemies freak out. And lastly a small yet fully detailed map with many collectibles and side missions.

The story was objectively terrible. I'm beyond tired of people heaping so much undeserved praise on the most relatively disappointing video game sequel since God of War 2.
Yes, it expanded the core gameplay from Arkham Asylum well in most ways. Even after Arkham Knight, it's still quite playable (unlike AA). However, the implementation of armored enemies in combat and predator was a goofy and artificial way to try to make players use automatic/loud takedowns. How is a nutcracker suit or chest protector going to stop Batman from choking them out? I can understand them being more resilient to certain attacks and projectiles. But to no longer fall down from a glide kick or completely halt a 250 pound master ninja backflip kicking them in the jaw? I do think it's a worse design for predator areas than for combat. The fastest way to take them out is to just get behind them, fire the batclaw, and have them bump right into Batman and fall down so I can use a ground takedown. It's far quicker than doing the "beatdown" technique. I'm glad Arkham Knight went for hulking mini-gunners instead (though it used them sparingly).
The titans of AA were simple yet viscerally satisfying enemies to fight. But in AC you just perma-stun them and mash square while Batman's head and shoulders embarrassingly clip into him. Using the ultra stun on AC titans when there are a ton of regular-sized enemies is near impossible. I've just used the explosive gel quickfire to stun them instead. I wish Rocksteady would have let us do all three stun techniques (the batarang throw from AA, and the two from AC). Funny enough, when an Arkham City titan roars before a charge or is charging, a quickfire batarang even vaguely in their direction will always hit them and do nothing instead of hitting one of the normal enemies I intended the batarang for. Rocksteady didn't change that from AA, even though it's now useless in AC.
Not all proper boss fights were winners, either. Grundy was a pseudo boss fight puzzle reminiscent of the lamest parts of God of War 2, and the actual one-on-one part of the fight with Ra's was a wholly inferior version of the battle with Poison Ivy in AA.
But the absolutely horrendous story is what cripples it. The nature of the plot is very loosely stitched together and scatter-brained. It's obvious that the big confrontations and gameplay scenarios with the villains were decided first, then they tried to tie it all together later. This is the case for many AAA games, but Arkham City is one of the worst offenders ever. Overtly nonsensical plot holes, laughably contrived events, and some cringe-inducingly juvenile dialogue. It's thematically bankrupt as it pretends to be epic and profound with, admittedly, stirring music. Look, every Arkham game has some contrivances, but they're nowhere near as bad nor as widespread as in Arkham City.
Some of the major plot twists were also embarrassingly self-spoiled. We could see that there was a healthy-looking Joker that gassed Batman, the real Joker coughing as he's filming Clayface Joker, and we could see Clayface Joker facing the mirror and seeing the sick Joker. I don't know how any person could be surprised by the end reveal (attempted one, anyway). This game is not in any way comparable to Mr. Dini's fantastic contributions to Batman: The Animated Series and Mask of the Phantasm.
I have to say that some of the Arkham City side missions like Zsasz's phone calls were actually much, much better written than the main plot.
By far the shortest campaign of the four main games.
Everything involving Catwoman was mediocre at best and came in strange intervals.
I will say that the challenge mode would've been easily the best of the series, but the absolutely scummy practice of carving out DLC character and challenge maps that could've been on the disc on day one, then selling them back to gamers. Each of the four main Arkham games are guilty of this to some degree, though.
This game really shows how to make a great super hero game!
Arkham Joker is the absolute perfect interpretation of the character in any piece of media.
Animated was better in my opinion.

1 - Unique themes/atmospheres and the way they varied between each villain's arc (Joker-Penguin-Freeze-RazAlGhul-Dr.Strange).
All missions involving these guys had distinct environments and enemies making them so damn immersive
2 - Gameplay and Bosses, all missions, levels and mechanics were so fleshed out
3 - Feeling of being a badass with gliding, combat, stealth while maintaining the difficulty
Nah the boss fights were bland, mr freeze was good but that was really it. And also the side missions I found quite repetitive

This game really made me *FEEL* like Batman: Arkham City
The reason Akrham asylum and city were literall perfection Because it was made by people who know and love the characters, written by batman legend writer Paul Dini, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil as batman and joker and everything else was just great. One my top 5 favorite games of all time.
Hector Rojas The gameplay is great in these games, but the writing and the cast really elevate the quality. Kevin and Mark sell every scene they're in. It's pure awesomeness.

"The TWIST" he says as batman twists some poor fucker's leg is either an amazing coincidence or a clever and delibrate play on words and context and i love it.
One thing that goes underappreciated in AC is the amazing Riddler puzzles. Without overdoing it but without making them too easy, the Riddler sidequest was great too. And AC had without a doubt the best and most challenging Challenge Mode.
An excellent story that's faithful to the comics but isn't afraid to bring something new to the table like it's ingenious twists made all better by Conroy and Hamil's iconic performances (especially Hamill who really gives it his all as what was appearnatly at the time, his last Joker performance) , giving Batman internal conflict and emotional character moments which have him a journey and an arc (something Asylum lacked which was the character development), intelligent writing, an open-world that, while not special in terms of content, quickly becomes one of the best PS3 open-worlds because of the atmosphere and incredible detail in addition to being packed with the brim with missions and Easter eggs for Batman fans, oh and no Arkham review is complete without meationing the series' revolutionary combat and stealth mechanics which led to two amazing boss fights in Mr Freeze and Ra's Al Guhl; fixing the boss battle issues from the original.
Batman: Arkham City is a truly marvelous achievement, easily the best Arkham and Batman game, the best superhero game (Spider-Man came close though), and up there with the greatest games of not only its generation, but of all time.
I can’t believe there was a time in my life I hadn’t played any of these games(considering myself a Batman fan), but in the span of two years, I’ve finished, and appreciated every single thing about them.

Origins got a lot of flak but I think it's just as good, if not better than City. I certainly find it more enjoyable and the story is fantastic. That being said, City is obviously an amazing game that deserves all the praise it gets for taking what Asylum did and improving almost every aspect.
The Batman Game series is my fav superhero game series. I did enjoy Spiderman but Batman takes the cake.

I think the most under looked element of this game is the setting, Arkham City is so unique and extreme. Many Batman media always tries to create the most dangerous version of Gotham. But with Arkham City just turns it up to 11, everytime i play this game i always thought of the construction process: how the residents of Old Gotham is evicted, how long was the wall built, how do they cut of the sewer and road access, how do they arrange the landlords and companies who had buildings there. The Arkham City setting is just so interesting and leaves alot for the imagination

Wise Green Wanderer Arkham Asylum has it’s own personal experience because it’s more linear & not subjected to open world. Open world games age overtime in most cases. Arkham Asylum is set up to be a 1 of 1 game & could be a 1 & Done game, that could still be enjoyable years upon years from now. The only true critique you have is the Boss fight not being executed to their full potential. The combat is dated? Lol okay to what standards? ARKHAM GAMES? Lol Rocksteady created the this combat, to say the combat is dated because the franchise evolved makes no sense. Even comparing the combat to games to that tried to mimic it (Shadow Of Mordor/War & Tasm 1/2) Arkham Asylums combat is still Miles ahead.
No matter how many years fly by, I will always come back and play this game. My #1 favorite game of all time.

With Arkham City in particular they nailed the atmosphere so hard. Every bit of the lighting and texture is legitimately perfect. Like the glow of the neon signs and the yellow street lamps off the cracked brick pavement or the huge yellow glow of the gotham buildings in the skyline

Frozen Wine well as great as arkham city was I still agree with watchmojo on this one as I just felt spiderman ps4 was a better game overall when it comes to gameplay, combat, web swinging mechanics, story, characters etc imo still that takes nothing away from arkham city as it's still one of the best superhero games ever made and it's all subjective at the end of the day.
I raged extremely hard when I watched that video too. I felt that Arkham City should have taken every point in that video with the exception of world. I love Spiderman PS4 don't get me wrong it's in my top five. But Arkham City is in my top one.

This is one hell of a game. The most rewarding combat system ever once you master the free flow mechanic and learn not to mash the attack button. Spent hours on the extreme combat challenges perfecting them - those were good times.
Arkham Batman has become the most amazing iteration of Batman. He is also pretty much the strongest of them too. I love the Arkhamverse. What they did with it, was amazing. Purely amazing. And Asylum already started so good, it was way ahead of its time. The Freeflow combat system is probably the most intuitive, engaging and rewarding gameplay system I have ever enjoyed. Characters. Story. Setting. Plot. Gameplay. Graphics. Soundtrack. THIS GAME HAD IT ALL. Replable as fuck. Still slaps 10 years later. It is a timeless masterpiece.

I’ve played all the DLC for Knight, I played Asylum and City, all back to back, I’m currently playing Origins, and if I’m being honest, Asylum is my least favorite. I think while it’s good, the rest not only have better worlds to explore, but also do a better job of making you feel like Batman. City did a great job of showing off Batman’s persistence. Knight did a great job with no only the tech, but also his family, and his trauma. Origins dose a great job with the fear aspect. For instance, at the start of the game, when he first begins the hunt for Penguin, while he was interrogating the arms dealer, you could really feel his fear due to the first person and the camera angle showing just a silhouette with yellow eyes. Compared to the rest of the franchise, and even Insomniacs Spider-Man, it just hasn’t aged that well. I remember getting stuck so much because of how annoying the snipers where, and how the stealth sections where basically impossible without inverted takedowns. There were also a lot of bugs I encountered with Items like the Line Launcher, like in the gardens there’s that random gap at the entrance, and if you where a bit to far left or right, you would hit the random windowsills and fall into the void. The death screens were my biggest complaint out of all three games, especially Knight and Origins, as they weren’t easy to skip, and got really annoying after hearing the same lines over and over again.

I just started playing Arkham Origins for the first time and it is fucking awesome too - it is like a huge DLC for only ~10 buck now. Though I get why people were so let down by it when it came out.

I vividly remember preordering arkham city back in 2011. I absolutely loved and was blown away by arkham asylum when I picked it up . So when I heard they were making a sequel I was all in . I was working at a tgi Fridays around that time and figured hey I can afford to dish out the 65 dollars for it . I recall being with a bunch of my friends hanging out and being so hyped to go down to the local GameStop to pick it up . When I got home I was even more amazed at how much they did to keep the combat the same the near flawless combat mixed in with a brand new story . Than the map that map was way bigger than asylum . The riddle r trophies were a lot more challenging this time around and they even set up the combat and stealth challenge room sections up with riddler being the one behind the challenges . You can play as Batman , robin, catwoman, nightwing so this one had already taken a few notches up from the last one . Story was a tremendous plot twist after plot twist for the first time that is . If you played it already duh it doesn't have that effect but for the first time I was like whaaa noo way how why ? But in a good way . What made it an amazing game was they made it to where What ever was not broken like the combat how easy and fun it was to run down and through enemies with your fists and gadgets one after the next . TAKE a new approach and make it a lot bigger map wise and add a lot more characters into it wether it was enemies or friendl ies they have a lot more to choose from . We also had extra challenge map packs for preordering so it was a little thank you . Yet later on if you bought the game twice or three times like I did they had all the bonus content from the start with the game of the year edition. Graphics are good gameplay is fun and no matter what year it is you still find yourself wanting to revisit for some reason any reason. That simple answer is everything about the game was fun and rewarding . Stealth was enhanced from the first one you can grapnel gun up and got faster you can swan dive to gain full range of freedom in the sky . They added all.the new moves and takedowns they took out the throw move and added a faster quicker takedown although the throw takedown will forever be remembered by hardcore fans . They added the bat swarm takedown . So much effort went into making it the best Batman game it can be . They even had dlc for Harley Quinn in the game of the year edition and you can play as her in the challenge rooms. Such an incredible game of its not the graphics it's the gameplay . Even 8 years later this game is still good I found myself downloading both the arkham city and asylum games first when I got game pass for the first time . That's how good they are that I had access to all these games I never played before but I rather play the familiar amazing game that I've played countless times in the past before . Arkham city from me gets like a 9.5-9.8 out of 10 it's almost flawless . Still gamers love this game and I'm thinking of replaying it again for a nine hundredth time . Hahaha
I love all of the Arkham games, though there are some better than others, from good to amazing. I wouldn't really call any of the games trash. Especially Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
Arkham Asylum is my personal favorite. I remember coming home from school, it was summer vacation. Parents taking me to gamestop to get this awesome batmam game. Immediately going to my room to play it. This game was the first to really challenge in a few ways. It challenged me mentally, the puzzles getting harder and harder throughout the story is what made this game really fun. The stealth and combat was amazing and fun, and got harder. The game felt like it was pushing me to do better and better. Create plans to overcome something or someone. And I've learned so many things about batman allies and villains, the little clues about them hidden in plain sight was always satisfying to find. And the game scared and creeped the hell out of me as a kid. Killer Croc freaked me out especially his lair mission, Scarecrow creeped me out, and the environment was dark. And I loved it. The death and decay is what made it a true myster, horror type game.
StarlightKY Arkham Asylum is a Timeless game because of its execution. It’s my favorite alongside Knight. I think City has the best story but that it.

This will be the decider for the 2020 era of superhero games. I’m just happy we’re finally getting a real head to head between the two superhero game juggernauts, now all we need is a Prototype 3 thrown in there and 2021 is shaping up to be a phenomenal year.

I have one thing what is the actual level cap of the game.when you finished completing the last catwoman loot mission there are no mission left.you got to keep roaming around Arkham city even tho when there's no mission left to complete.
I remember when the game first released and I dont have any pc or console to play it, I was just staring at the mall watching kids play, but now I do have my own pc and this game is the first one on my lists. All I can say is "I'M BATMAN"

Basically, it'd be one of those games that makes you feel overpowered, but still be challenging.
But sadly, the closest we got to that was either Superman 64 or Lego Dc games.

I got 75% on my first save at 2018 on my PS3, sadly my PS3 broke and now i got a new chance to buy this game on Steam
Marvel’s Spider-Man may be my favorite superhero game of all time, but before it, Arkham City was the undisputed champ. Rocksteady created one of my favorite Batman stories that I’ve ever consumed...in a video game...
Crazy.
The reason why Arkham City is the best Batman game is because Rocksteady completely understood every character that they wrote into the storyline. Every supervillain and antihero had own distinct their roles and arcs, and none of them felt underutilized or overly compensated for. Especially, Joker. Mark Hamill’s 2011 performance in Arkham City is one of the best Joker performances ever, and it was the perfect finale for his character.
Such an awesome game, I still like Knight more but that’s my favourite game ever

Every single game in the series (including origins) are all fantastic games but city was on another level. They took everything that made asylum great and turned it up to 11. One of the best games i've ever played. Definitely in my top 5 favourite of all time. Perhaps even top 3.
I think what made this game better was the fact that Bruce was infected with Joker's Blood and was on the clock looking for the cure.

Ehh Marvels Spider-Man is miles ahead of Arkham City. Only thing that competes is the Story, & Spider-Man still wins.

I don’t fully agree when people say that Batman took a lot of combat queues from Spider-Man 2 . I understand some similarities but the Arkham series legit built a combat system that has been reverberated throughout most 3rd player action-adventure games in its subsequent generations ... Arkham City is a masterpiece

No, not at all. The Arkham series has always been famous for being true masterpiece and the best comic book game series. Those youtube channels might be joking because 99% of the gaming community know the series is 10/10
naruto sage isn’t there one game in the series which is considered bad though ? I personally enjoyed them but I’ve seen videos saying that they suck and were a complete disappointment.

Arkham Origin and Arkham Knight were not as good as the others but they are still 7.5-8/10. The reason why some people dont like origin is because it doesnt improve the mechanic much after City, but still has good story and the best boss battles
Arkham Knight, has best graphics and story in the series, but was criticized for a little too much driving car mission.
